Name: Jim Figueroa
Age: 26
Married: for 3 years this OCT.
No kids
Moved over from Cali 2 years ago because I went to LA with the wrong mindset, totally incorrect information, temptations that made me lose my bearings and I was surrounded by friggin vultures from the moment I got off the plane, I swear.
In cleveland I've directed two pilots for PAX, an AD for news show for Telemundo, I've done the "one man band" thing on way too many projects and pretty much learned my craft from everyone here on DVXuser and the "if at first you don't succeed" method. I'm blessed with an amazingly gorgeous wife that everyone "mistakes" for my sister at parties, and I am making my very first short film in one week.
I am a Bi-polar and a perfectionist and it makes most of the stuff I shoot look good. It's also one of the the reasons why I cant make a demo reel or set up a website or even give people my card... if i'm not happy with it then I scrap it. For anyone that knows bi polars then you'll get that last sentence.

My message for guys like Ballplaya and PTO and all the rest of you young DVXusers is: feel proud of yourselves. You had the good sense to start now, dont call yourselves unknowledgeable, or dumb or say its unfortunate that your young. All I can say is take me as an example, i'm 26 and I just started my lifelong dream in feb., all because I never had the good sense to just jump in. Don't ever think you don't know enough, even the oldest, wisest Most valuable DVXuser still has stuff to learn, and these things you are learning now from him/her at the age of 14,15 and 16.
Good call.

I'm the same way man... when I first started playing guitar in high school, I didn't even consider myself a guitar player until after I'd been playing for about a year. I don't consider myself a filmmaker, well, mainly because I haven't bought myself a camera... but even when I do, I won't consider myself a filmmaker for a long time...

No, no, no. Diz said his/her breakdancing career didn't get off the ground. Sounded like an old school Henny Youngman one-liner to me. Did nobody else read that as a joke? D'oh.

I did. I was expecting him to say 'No pun intended' or 'litterally' or something...

It's the fear sometimes, you know? Not like scared kinda fear, but more of the "time is slipping" kind of fear. My advice about the camera is just do it. I found one in the marketplace for real cheap, pm'd the guy and went on a lay-away plan. Every week, even if it was just $50 (even if'ts just $20) knock at that little by little until you have it payed off.
I wish i couldve recorded myself when I first got it, with a Bi Polar pattern also comes the excessive compulsive dissorder, Try to imagine Jack nicholson in "as good as it gets" but with a DVX, I'ts been 8 months and I still clean it everyday like it might rot away or something.
Anyway, don't wait any longer trying to get the HVX or a brand new DVX or just waiting...waiting is a good recipe to find yourself still waiting at 40.

Of course I dont know your particuler situation, so don't think i'd single you out, I mean this for everyone.

I know that. I finally quit my MFTT (also known as job) late last year so I could cash in my 401k and get my DVX. After getting several emails a month for four months I went back. Still hate the MFTT but I do have the DVX and trying to get better at it. As Joel Goodsen would say. Sometimes you just gotta say, "What the fuck, make your move."

Oddly enough, it isn't the money issue... not exactly. I could go out and pick up a DVX right now from a local dealer in LA and start filming with it tomorrow. The problem with me is I'm just such a perfectionist it's kind of scary. I want my stuff to look like film and the DVX won't get there for me. The HVX would get a lot closer, but still not. I wish I wasn't such a friggin perfectionist. It would make my life a LOT easier!

Anyway, don't wait any longer trying to get the HVX or a brand new DVX or just waiting...waiting is a good recipe to find yourself still waiting at 40.
I was reading this book I got from the library where they're interviewing directors about their first feature. Oliver Stone made his first real feature when he was 40. He said he'd been out of film school for 13 years and it was driving him nuts that he wasn't making films. The thing about these days is it's entirely possible to do an ultra low budget film with everything being digital... but will it be up to my almost unrealistic standards? I don't think it would.

Of course I dont know your particuler situation, so don't think i'd single you out, I mean this for everyone.
I've got a great job that pulls in about 50k a year and practically no bills. I don't plan to quit my day job soon (even though it is just a day job and I'd love to not be doing it anymore). If I actually made up my mind and decided to go the HVX route I'd have to spend X amount of dollars on the camera, the storage device, the lighting, the audio, the better computer to edit HD and effects, etc. etc. ... it gets quite overwhelming for me...

EDIT: After posting this and reading it, it doesn't really capture the essence of what I'm trying to say, so I hope it kind of makes sense... :)

21 in November!

Third Year Film and Television student at Savannah College of Art and Design, GA

Bought the HVX/M2 to make myself a portfolio and free myself from depending on renting our schools cams, plus they don't have no stinkin' HVX's.

The money would of probably been better spent on a car, but I am an avid bicyclist so it works out.

Wanted to be a director since I was 12, but am becoming more and more interested in cinematography and am considering becoming a DP.....

The best type of visual art (in my subjective opinion) would be music videos and narrative films.

Music videos being the surreal, creative, and strange types. NOT the cliche rap vids or band vids where the band just plays on a stage with some crappy drama subplot. (Sorry if I offend anyone that makes those, just not my style)

And don't get me wrong there are great Rap videos out there. Off the top of my head: Almost all kanye west vids, Common 'Testify', 'Sabatoge' Beastie Boys, Jay Z '99 problems was good..... I am not gonna go on anymore about this.

My music video influences would be M. Gondry, Chris Milk, C. White, S. Jonze, jonas Åckerlund, Jonathan Dayton, C. Cunningham, oh and did I say CHRIS MILK? :)

My aspirations are to direct music videos and jump to the big screen like Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep), Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine), Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are (in production)), and many others have done.

Whew. That is all I want to disclose at this present time and place. :lipsrseal

I think I understand. I don't know if this will catch the essence of what you want to say but:
It's like moving out of your house with two days notice. Seems pretty overwhelming but you can do it if you take breaks and don't try to carry everything out at once.

After that all you have to do is realize the 2 day notice was placed there by none other than yourself.
Good luck my friend.

Great analogy. And yes, that's a huge part of what I feel like...

Thought this was a great thread and will eventually make it all the way through it. For the record:
Started cutting mag stripe on a steenbeck and cutting drama and variety on an RA 4000 and 4 AVR1's.Thank God quad is dead. Now if you know what that means then you know why I was one of the first to jump on an AVID and buy an NLE. Frist video camera I shot with was a TK76.
Exectuive producer/director for 25 years worked around the world and love the biz.
Sold business(3 )_in June of 2006,went on sabbatical and bought a DVX in July.Shoot as often as I can and love to learn and DVX User has been AWESOME!
Will complete my MA Video and Film production by the end of the year and begin my PhD (small screen and just-in-time learning) in the spring of 07.
Live in Monteal and sometimes Toronto.
No gold teeth, not a virgin (at 55?)can't wait to make a decision on a 35mm adapter and happy to be back in the field and not running a production company.

Hi guys, I am Vincent, a new member here. I am from Malaysia.

I am 22 years old, was an Engineering drop out, then entered Mass Comm where I found my calling in filmmaking. Currently in the final year and final semester of my course. I am majoring in Film and TV Productions.

I am also a freelance DP and I guess what you all would term freelance videographer. I have worked on various corporate videos, shot a concert, shot a documentary, filling in from time to time as the Lighting Director for my juniors, did three of my own short films (one using the Canon XL1 and two using the DVX102), and have shot a feature length film for a local independant director (using the Sony FX1 and in black and white no less!!!). I am also currently in the middle of shooting another one for my lecture, another local independent director.

I will shoot my fourth short film this year before I am out of Uni for good.

I love horror movies and noir, and was greatly inspired by the filmmaking methods of Sam Raimi and Robert Rodriquez. I also love movies with postmodern themes and Memento and Akira Kurosawa's Roshamon remain one of my favourite movies ever.

I also have a healthy dose of obsession with Samurai films (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro), and spaghetti westerns (The Man With No Name Trilogy).

Influenced by a dark period in my life, all my shorts have similiar recurring themes of dread, surrealness, bleakness, suicide, destructiveness, tragic love, and death.

First and foremost, I love being a DP. I love the idea of painting with lights. My lighting style was influenced by horror movies and noir for that dark contrasting look. I am getting better at it and now can't wait to try out even more technique in my next project.

You guys are a cool bunch here.

Hi, I'm Keith, and I'm an alcoholic... whoops- wrong room ;)

I'm 41, been doing graphic arts since cut and paste meant using real glue. Got interested in the internet when it first came out and got into web design. Got an AS degree at a crappy little school, where I had to help the teacher to get her frame exercises to work. Picked up a little experience in everything, including a brief glossing over on video capture and editing. That was what got me on the road to video and film.

I started editing surf and interview clips for SurfGuru.com, learned to shoot so I could show the camera guys what I wanted. Then I started doing band videos, corporate seminars, freelance camera, just about anything that doesn't involve kids or animals. Right now, I'm working on creating an hour long opera... of sorts.

On the hardware end, I started with an XL1s and a GL1, dropped the XL, and just recently replaced the GL with a HD100u. Working on upgradeding the audio now.

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.

I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets. I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.

I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I once read Paradise Lost, Moby-Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me.

I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. I have made extraordinary four-course meals using only a Mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis. . and I stole this from Hugh Gallagher who wrote this for his application for admission to NYU. He got in. His last line being "But I have not yet gone to college."

...and i thought it would be reallyy easy....

haha

LOL. Yea, its tough to find enough people. I couldnt- no free iPod for me.:crybaby:

But, I have to say, its a whole lot easier to get free money another way... its called asking. You send a nice letter to a local branch of a business (not big box stores) and they usually are very nice to you.

Job: The computer guy at a small company in LA.

I been a member of this awesome site since 01/05, don't really post much as everything else is already been discussed, so I spent my time using the search engine and getting all the answers there. I been writing since I was 12, I always loved films, worked as a PA for a few days in a feature, then did photography and AD in a short film.
After that I decided it would be cool to do something of my own, bought a dvx and decided to make a film trilogy in order to learn the craft.

I shot my first feature in a 9 day period, spent about $3500 to shoot it, best money i've ever spent (besides of course buying the dvx) it was a hell of an experience, the shoot had a lot of problems, it was everyone's first feature film but it was so much fun and we all learned a lot.

I am in the middle of shooting the second feature of the trilogy now. To make things a little more interesting, I decide to set the story in 3 different countries, El Salvador, Mexico and Los Angeles.

I am hoping to finish all 3 films by 10-07 and be a better filmmaker then.

Cheers!

true, oh well it's on top now, I may as well participate.

Name: Brandon Fraley

Age: 21

Location: Monterey, California

School: currently taking 1 or 2 classes at community college, taking it REALLY easy.

Work: I work as a web designer (amazing, considering how little I know about web design) but that ends up only being about 1-5 hours a week. Not enough to live on. Trying to do music videos for local acts.

Cinematic Ambitions: I try to do one short every semester and do music videos every opportunity i get. I try to avoid corporate work (really not my strength) but did just have a paying job shooting a bellydance video. Otherwise I'm really just getting started in my filmmaking career, started just under 2 years ago.

Hobbies: watching movies and reading/studying film and music. I play bass and drums in a couple bands. Video games. Travel.

Member since October 2005, although I was checking out the site since I owned the camera upon its release back in October 2002. Still rocking the original (can't kill a classic) I have dropped, abused, and put more dust and dirt on my dvx than I care to admit.. but it still works like the day I boght it. Best investment I ever made (along with the 1000's of dollars in accesories I now own for it. aarrggghh!!!)

Got my start shooting the first season of the Chappelle Show using the DVX. I was a dumb kid who saved every dime her had to get the camera, and at the time no one really knew anything about it, except that the image looked just like that of the Varicam. Since Comedy Central broadcasts SD, they hired me as bcam for $100 bucks a day. Man was I happy to be there!! although at the time I thought the show was gonna fail miserably! Now everyone is "Rick James.. Bitch"

To pay the bills I am an editor at College Sports Television in NY. Cut promos, teases, whole shows, long and short format features, etc. Final Cut at work, although I am a Liquid Edition fan.

Last year I took a 2 month journey around the US creating a show about Nissan trucks. I never posted it cause I was always self conscious about it.. but what the hell.. here it is:
http://www.destinationxterra.com

And my website:
http://www.pantlessproductions.com

Not married. Serious GF who just joined the Army cause she hated her job. Now we are both in the service. I love shooting, although I must say I am SERIOUSLY humbled by all of the talent on this site. I study everyone's posts and projects to learn what I can for my upcoming shoots, and appreciate everyone's hard work!

Oh wow, never knew the people behind the names...

My name is actually Matt. My ex called me Matty, her friend decided it would be cute to call me Mattykins, thus the name...

Single still after a (very) rough breakup last year.

19 and an intern whore.

Never worked with a DVX, but worked with 16mm, super 16, HV20s, consumer cams, and my personal favorite...the Panavision HD-900F

Worked for A&E for a bit, and Beauty and the Geek (for casting).

Current Student at Ithaca College for Cinema Production.

4 completed feature screenplays, numerous shorts.

Wrapped my second 16mm shoot this weekend actually. Waiting on the telecine from the lab.

And looking to work as a director/DP in the future sometime. Working on putting a feature film together to go into production next summer.

my name is Adam, I'm also freakin tall, 27 years old

worked at Kinko's for 7 years (asst mgr at Copley Square in Boston)

Played in a band called Arcoda and in 2003 we recorded a record with Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer Levon Helm of The Band on drums. It was named in a few top 10 lists by some newspapers and radio stations.

Graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Music Industry and had absolutely no idea what i wanted to do.

Then I watched Big Lebowski, fell in love with movies, quit the band, and bought my first video camera in 2004. Since then I've watched about 500 movies a year.

Started making shorts and won third place in Sci-Fest with A Brief Case which was then accepted by the Boston Int'l Film Festival.

Six months ago I quit Kinko's and now i write and direct local TV commercials with my brother Evan (23) for an ad agency called Mt Mansfield Media. We've made about 40 spots so far.

I've done a few cool projects I'm really proud of... an interactive cinema thing we came up with for BP, a game for the US Army, a music video, and a bunch of short stuff. Currently lined up to produce a feature film, but first must put together the package and the money... meanwhile pursuing some web serial stuff.

I'm 21
And have been working for the same company for almost 3 years, I started as a Web Developer did that for about a year until they where talking about doing videos, So i jumped on that opportunity. Convinced them to buy a DVX since i already had one for about a year and know it in and out. So i was then shooting pretty much every convention that was in the LA, LV, SD areas. This was until the news side of the company split and i was still with the main company, so i still did some with him and some with the main company.

We moved into new offices and i have built a small (very small 8x7 ft) studio for web casts, I got a new supervisor and we started making more videos again.

This whole time i was still being paid as a entry level web developer $14 hr, i push for a raise but they don't budge.
So i proposed going freelance at a much more reasonable rate and it looks like JAN 1st 2008 i will be officially freelance!

Timur, you played as well?

I had an Angel Speed 04. Best marker I ever owned and shot. And I shot a lot of them. While everyone was toting around the Ego, I still had my beast of an angel. She never failed me once - though I walked on the field shooting 410 once by accident. When I first got it - adjusted it wrong. That got me in a scuffle with a referee back in the day.

Haven't been on a field in two years. I still miss my Angel. But I have an old spyder compact lying in my closet in the event I ever wanted to play a pickup round. And let me tell you - I played with that spyder in several tournaments. It's always hysterical when you are walking around with 500 dollars worth of gear. Dye Division pants, Angel jersey, 90 dollar mask and a marker that costs 50 bucks.

Those were the days...

I have a Angel LCD from the year 2001. All black Dye, barrel, Eggolution loader.... in the words of of Hooper from Jaws... "Fast Fish...."

theres nothing quite like putting 23 paintballs in the air before the first one reaches its target......

Anyhow back on track...
