A friend had this posted in his blog. I grew up on this guy. One of the most amazing journalists ever.
Anyway, he had this show called "CONNECTIONS" which traced the most bizarre connections of inventions of the past to things we have today.
here is a youtube:

Anyway, if anyone is struggling with their idea, or looking for ideas for timefest, this might shake your head up enough to get the juices flowing.

OMG!!!! I love James Burke AND Connections!!! I miss that show so much!!! I can't believe that it is not aired on any of these 500 channels that I have!
Never thought of checking YouTube. Thanks for the tip.
Wow. So cool to have some fellow James Burke fans! I had his book The Day the Universe Changed! Loved it

How nice! I finally got to show my wife an episode of Connections and see James Burke. I've been talking about that show since the day we got married... Just one of my favorites!
So nice to hear his voice again!
Thanks Mark. What a treat!

Well I was six when it aired in 1978 ... for one season ... in England. :)
Maybe it wasn't syndicated in Texas or I surely would have seen it. There were only 6 or 7 channels for the first 12 years of my life.

I had actually seen his later show first, "The day the world changed," which was made in the 80s. Same kind of show. Then I got into CONNECTIONS.

I didn't get into Connections until 1988. I was hooked immediately!

James Burke!!! He's the DADDY!
When I was a boy he did a series call the James Burke Half Hour - oh wow, that series alone is responsible for an entire generation going into engineering....well that and the Moon Shot I guess, oh and Star Trek of course.
I enjoyed CONNECTIONS, but I enjoyed THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED more. I learned more history in that series than anything else I've experienced. This guy is so lucid. I'd love to buy some DVDs of his if they become available, I'm gonna start searching Amazon.

I got hooked on Connections reruns on PBS for a while. My favorite was the power grid going down. Pretty impressive show. I bet PBS sells the DVD's. They sell just about anything they've ever aired it seems like.

What's funny about that black out is just about the exact same thing just happened again a few years back. Man, that was a fun day.
Here's one of the things JB's up to these days:
