I'm wondering if anyone built the dolly from the plans on syntheyes' site: http://www.ssontech.com/content/LinearDolly.pdf I'm not sure whether it will give smooth moves, but it definitely looks easy to make and quite cheap as well (I'll have to check the local prices for the parts).
