Once upon a time there was a girl who had a beautiful camera. She took it everywhere with her, and she taped many happy memories upon its lovely mini-dv tape.

"I know" said the girl. "I will connect my 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable from my camera to my computer and create a wonderful video to post upon the youtube!"

But an evil power had taken over her firewire ports, and her computer would not recognize the camera as being connected. This was very frustrating to the girl, and even the good wizard Sony Vegas could not help her. She tried everything, connecting the camera while turned on, turning it on and then connecting, connecting in VCR mode, connecting in camera mode and then switching over, connecting and NOT switching over... and all was for naught. She even tried singing to her camera. It didn't help.

And so the girl was perplexed. The computer said that the firewire port was fully functional and operating, and yet, the computer will not recognize the camera as being connected, so she cannot capture the video she needs.

Can you help this fair maiden release her camera from the evil spell?
And if not... can you explain the great journey that the fair maiden will need to send her camera on to get it fixed?

I thank you.

Don't drink the bong water.

Have you tried another firewire cable? Have you tried another FW device to make sure the computer is indeed, working?

could be that the port on the cam is blown as well. do you know anyone else with a camera? try hooking the 2 cams up via FW with the one in vcr mode and see if it works. also could be a bad cable. if the port on your cam is blown probably easier and cheaper to buy a cheap minidv cam to use for transfer than have the repair done to your camera.

Just say yes - you'll get a lot more help. For the first six months on this site I pretended to be Cameron Diaz.

Once again, an example of why we have comparatively few women who will identify themselves. She shouldn't have to say she's hot. Come on...

If it's a 4-pin to 4-pin, blowing up the firewire port should have been impossible. The first thing to try is a different cable.

Also, try connecting to another camera. Eliminate computers entirely from the equation, connect directly to another camcorder and see if you get a connection.

Third, try connecting to a different computer. Somewhere along the way it should become clear which element in the chain is defective: your firewire port, or the cable, or your computer's firewire port. It really shouldn't be a software issue, we're talking about regular DV and that should be standard on any modern computer's OS, so it really should be down to one of the three elements: computer's firewire port, cable, or camera's firewire port.

Barry Barry Barry... I'm sure at my age you would asaid the same thing.

But yeah, try a diferent cable, then a diferent camera with the same computer.
