I am so gonna get one of these:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/12/acer-unveils-the-second-gen-gemstone/

http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/334/C14815/

The Gemstone Blue series is currently comprised of two models: Aspire 8920G and the Aspire 6920G. Both notebooks (http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/334/C14815/#) come with a Core 2 Duo processor, Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, up to 4GB of RAM, integrated webcam, biometric fingerprint reader, draft-N wireless, Bluetooth, and Acer Arcade Deluxe software. Wow, that's quite a list!

The Acer Aspire 6920G gets a 320GB hard drive, 1X Blu-ray Super Multi dual-layer drive, a 16-inch LCD (what an odd size), and 512MB NVidia GeForce 9500M GS graphics. The 8920G steps it up with dual hard drives (up to 320GB each), a 2X Blu-ray Super Multi dual-layer drive, and a monstrous 18.4-inch HD screen to go with dedicated GeForce graphics. This one tips the scales at nine pounds.

Prices range from $900 to $2000 depending on your configuration. Look for both Gemstone Blue notebooks to ship next month.

Price: 1399€ (2191$) <-- in Euro-land!! In the US maybe between 1500-1700$!

Looks a bit pricey due to the bad dollar exchange rate. But in the US it will be much cheaper anyway. Also for what you get, this is a killer price.

Wow, no one interested? I mean, it is the first 16:9 notebook, ever! And it has even got a Full HD Display - 1920 x 1080 Pixel. Like 1920 x 1080 Pixel from the HVX... And it is really affordable.

I dig the Death Star-looking touch controls on the left side of the keyboard.

get that down to about 1500-1700 and it'd be very very attractive.

pretty sweet - could be very handy on set shooting as well as being a pretty solid stand alone editing bay.

I think you can get a quite good equipped one for 1500-1700$. Mine is only so expensive, because I am in Euro-land.

It starts at 900$ and goes up to around 2000$ in the US. So there is something for everybody :)

yes the controls are really film like, you might also be able to control the computer with the mind or some sort of hand movement like in minority report.

seriously, great computer you'll have. Yes I also feel the pain of the euroland, but when you buy in dolars is great (change is about 1.56 dolars for an euro).

On a related note, does anyone know why laptop and desktop LCDs are usually 16:10 instead of 16:9? I've always assumed that 16:10 was cheaper or something, but haven't ever been able to find any actual evidence of that.

German stores list it with a delivery date of two weeks. So they might come quite soon.

About 16:10 and 16:9. I don't know. I can't find any information about this issue. I am also interested.

The funniest explanation I could find is, that 16:10 is closer to the golden section - 1,618. :D

With flight within Europe being so cheap these days maybe you could come to visit Spain and buy it here.

True words. Could you send me a spanish link to a comparable Lenovo notebook? (even though there is the keyboard problem with german umlauts for example)

Besides the fact that this notebook is somehow special. It is the first notebook with the 16:9 formfactor. And it has got full HD resolution a Blueray player and 4GB Memory. My only gripe is, that is only 2.4Ghz and that it has no pcmcia slot (which the lenovos have)

There are lenovos with 1920x1200 resolution, but these are really expensive.

No. Probably the other way round. But doing your plan, you might end up paying 4 times the price :D

I am based in germany. Spain and germany are based in europe and inner europe flights are cheap. Like "I can fly from germany to spain for 30$-cheap.

I'm seeing that it has HDMI.... is that an input or output? because I might have to buy it if its an input. It says: "HDMI™ port with HDCP support" in the Product brochure (pdf) (http://www.acer.com/gemstoneblue/deu/pdf/BR-gemstoneblue-UK.pdf) I guess it is output.
