I bought a portable drive today. I planned on using it just for extra storage, but perhaps it's fast enough to handle Final Cut Pro XDCAM editing? It was pretty cheap. What do you think of:

SimpleTech
Signature Mini USB 2.0 Portable Drive
320GB

The store said it was 7200 rpm, but the website says 5400 rpm.

I really want to buy the Gdrive mini, but it's big bucks. It uses Firewire 800, which I imagine would be better for editing.

I edit DV off a WD buss powered pocket drive all the time and since the bit rate of XDcam (XDcamHD 35mbps?) isn't much more I would expect it to edit alright. Not great but rough edits should definitely be possible.

You don't really need very high data rates for XDCAM EX - 5400rpm drives should be fine.

I don't really think FW800 is necessary.

Thanks for the info guys. It sounds like I can edit with the drive. Have you ever heard of SimpleTech? Are they good dependable drives or junk?

i love the lacie rugged drives. I have used them in the US for the past 2 weeks for backing up and editing. Got the 250gb ones which are 5400rpm and absolutely fine for xdcam hd editing.

HI Guys I bought a SELF POWERED NEXTODI ND2525 case ($HK1450) - very cheap enclosure and added a 200GB DDM.. works like a charm (FW400 and USB2).

no need for laptop nor wall powered disk.

Been to Africa, Cambodia on the road with it. HAs a cool leather case .. lasts for ages between charges but would recommend a spare external battery.

I edit DVCPROHD 1080/25 (110Mbs from it (when I log and transfer from FCP). Bigger data rates than the stiff from the EX1 - works great .. worth a look.

for details see my post at http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=114853&highlight=NEXTOdi
