I read about the rolling shutter and its problems with flashes.
We are asked to shoot a live concert with 4 EX-1 and I wonder what will happen if the lightshow turns to strobe mode. Will the EX-1 CMOS flip out? Did anyone test this or can someone point me tofootgae so i can see if it works or how it looks.

The only thing I've seen so far thats close to what you are asking for is found at the bottom of the page from this link. It's the "Dirty Worms" footage. I'm not sure if the lights start to "strobe" or not.

Hey alpi,
there was some paparazzi footage of Heidi Klum on Pro7, you know, Heidi leaves a building and 10 photographers where fireing of like crazy - the footage was horrible!
Split in half images - I could only guess it was the EX1...
Someone said the effect will vary, depending on how far the strobe is away, so stage lights may not cause that much problems...

It's not so much distance to the strobe but more it's relative brightness in frame. If it's the predominant light source, then it's more likely to screw up your shot.

Stage "strobes" aren't always strobes. Also, even if they are strobes. they have a longer duration than paparazzi strobes (to magnify their apparent brightness). The longer the duration of the strobe, the less likely it is to cause problems with the rolling shutter.

What it means is that you should test the lighting before the shoot. If it causes issues with the EX1 then use your HVX. Keep them both in the trunk of the car.

I have tried my stage lighting CMR moving heads that use MSD lamps.

These types of lights use mechanical shutters. In strobe mode they cause no issues with the EX1.
I don't believe you will have an issue with the stage lighting. Now if someone turns around and aims their camera's flash at you, that's a different story.

I guess we will need a test for that. I won´t be able to test it on the real set, but one of my friends has a EX1 and I hope he has time to shoot a concert in town sometime soon.

I have also seen Paparazzi footage and it was so terrible it is a reason for me not to get the camera. You never know when a client calls and wants a pressconference shot. At least for me it is a possibility. But I understand a concert hardly ever has such a lighting as a Paparazzi-frenzy.
