Thanks Ted. Yeah, I am... Matt and I both wrote and directed SLEEPER, but yeah, it is hard to break the VFX GUY mold. It's like having a popular older brother in High School and being known as So and So's younger brother.

Except Matt and I aren't really brothers, He's younger than me and we're not in High School... oh never mind..... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I told Matt, that he should probably just quit now... He laughed and said something about trying to remember to take the lens cap off of the camera when he shoots my project. Yep... we are helping each other so that ought to be entertaining at the very least.

Anyhoo... yep I am in. My tagline is..."THE BUTTON IS WAITING" oh wait... that's Matt's tagline... oh crap... back to the drawing boards!

What the BLEEP was that? :furious3:

They need to work on some of their editing... but man oh man... that animation... They have some seriously MAD SKILLS! :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

The saddest thing is... I feel realing bad for them. Poor Fred is thinking, "I ROCK!" His wife is thinking, "I hope that I don't fall out of this dress!"

I really feel bad for them! But they are trying, so you have to give them some points for that... um... I need to get back to work.

Poor Fred and whats-her-name...

Mark T. Aro
03-13-2008, 09:01 AM
SCRIPT COMPLETE... I am real happy with it.

I have to storyboard and create an animatic because I am at 10 pages, but there is a lot of quick cutting scenes so that should take the time down, but it really wont be clear until I get a Scratch track and rough animatic running. I do anticipate some scene tweaking/cutting though.

Stay Tuned...

I hate storyboarding...it usually consists of me making it through 2 pages of drawing stick figures and notes at the bottom...then I say I'll just have a shot list...I know what it looks like in my head...any advice? lol

There is a link to a beta software on the net that will actually animate your movie for you ahead of time...but its kinda slow on my POS compy...and don't really want to d-load it at work...but here it is if you guys wanna take a look

thanks man! I do all my animatics in After Effects so I can mess with camera focus and all of that. As far as tips go, I am an illustrator so I like it. What I always tell people that don't draw well is, get a still camera and pose your friends or use toys as stand-ins. The reason I think that it is important because no matter what I have in my head (and I am very visual) sometimes I really need to work out a shot or sometimes I get inspired on a new take or direction at a scene. If you do it all on the fly you may miss that opportunity to really work through it and get the best bang for your buck.

If you just take barbies or your friends and pose them, then you will be able to get a nice feel for framing as well as pacing. Through that stuff into an editing program and add some Scratch audio and you can really get a handle on where you are going. I firmly believe in the PLAN YOUR WORK AND WORK YOUR PLAN theory.

When I was first starting to draw seriously, I believe that master artist and TRUE artist created masterpeices the first time around, with out studying the subject matter, sketching, lighting tests. A true masterful peice of art takes time and planning. Sure you don't want the planning to overpower the creativity, but if you do it right it will empower you so when you get to the filming process you are well arm and if you want to vere from the plan you can, because you have already worked through various scenerios and you have a much better feel of what you will get in the end. To me there are few things more disheartening then getting to the editing phase and looking at a shot and thinking, "Man, I should've done this or I should've taken more time with this... If only!" That sucks!

Storyboard, plan and get a feel for where you are going, before the stopwatch or Production starts. That's my plan... we will see how it goes.

Anyone that uses this owes me .50.... if I get enough people using it, maybe I can actually afford a RED. LOL

Yeah... the PUSH stuff was great fun. My anniversary was Saturday and we had a break between the morning/day shoot and evening. I took my wife to dinner and something I ate did not agree with me. I came back wicked sick. I didn't tell Matt, mainly because he didn't need extra stress. It's funny now, but I spent Saturday evening trying not to puke on anyone.

All things considered it was an awesome weekend. Thanks again to the Justin and Ian at Blaire, they seriously rock!

Well, I am glad that we have turned to page 6. I just couldn't visit your thread anymore until we got past that ballet dancing, Sumo wrestler!

Yeah...it was very disturbing. Matt is a FREAK!

Well after a long couple of months, I am back in the film mindset. I am of course involved in PUSH, but my own project has been pushed aside due to a collapsing ceiling, mold in the attic and walls (rental... wew) and my wife with massive respiratory problems. We are now officially moved! YEAH! So I am back on FISH BOMB script and planning the shoot for Netherborn, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

We will be doing some wire-work, which I have never done before. I have done wire removal, but never wire work. So I am now on the hunt for a place to shoot it and somewhere to build it and test it. OH what fun!!!!

More soon!

Did you read the script yet Gary?

No, remember I lost it in the pile of stuff at the PUSH shoot...dang! I have absolutely no idea where it went. Remember you asked me for a copy and I didn't have it...which is weird as I put it in my briefcase with the important stuff. Well, it ain't there. Hmmm, maybe I stuffed it into the NODES movie art we were looking at? I will check that.

May I have another one please...pretty please...with sugar, honey, candy, syrup, crab apples, egg plant, dehydrated spider intestines, perforated rotting water fowl toes on top? :2vrolijk_08:

Matt has my email and you can just shoot me a copy. Mark on the script what exactly you want in the fly shots, and that will help me to fabricate devious things to make it happen.

Oh, yeah I forgot! I am going to try to finish the new Steady Camera set up for your shoot so you will not have to rent/buy/steal one. Should hold up the Red camera with battery accessories quite easily. Are you going to need to run any low steady-cam shots or will a standard rig be OK?:undecided

Money would make creativity a nicer ride, but the argument is... would it stifle it? My observation is that most of my truly creative thoughts derive from desperate times which usually stem from money woes.

Food for thought!

Continuing on the 'Hyper-cam' today and finishing it this weekend. It will be ready for your shoots. BTW I am making a low rig extension for it too.

UPDATE! I have completed the complete shock absorbing arm of the HYPERCAM this weekend. The unit has three articulating joints with 2 bearings each instead of the normal one bearing. It will be adjustable from 1-80 pounds, although I don't want to carry 80 pounds on a rig! I am going to use a new form of control I call 'Hyper drive' that has never been used before to my knowledge. more later...

That would rock if it looked like WALL-E!

I would love that.... a little weird though... I wouldn't know where to grab it/him!

Sorry no treads, and no binocular vision unit. Still, it follows the old 'KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid' saying. It will do its job well, is CHEAP, (made for less than $200) is universal to both right and left handers, is comfortable, light, and with the crazy-simple 'Hyperdrive' will make it a cinch to operate.

Matt thinks we need to patent it before we show it as it is, I think, an improvement on most steady cams out there. I think it looks like most steady cams, and am dubious that anything but the 'Hyperdrive' is anything new. And, that could have been tried before, but I just don't know about it.

It is just the more useful arrangement of parts for weight distribution, direction of shock absorbsion, and fluidity of motion and control, that make it different. Since I have no money to patent it... Oh well. We'll just use it!:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Maybe I could put neon lights, and even an mp3 player on it... Possibly include levitation...

Mark, I am on the gimbal of the Hypercam. I am using a Subaru clutch throw out bearing for the main spinner! HA!

I have been thinking about your fly rig and have a really great idea: Cheap, easy to make and foolproof.:2vrolijk_08:

Well, the Hypercam is DONE! Matt and I tested it last Sunday and it is absolutely amazing. With low rig, medium rig and standard rig you have three positions from which to shoot. All with variable angles of shot. As it was designed for taking on and man-handling the RED camera, the HVX we used was a little light. It felt like there was nothing on the rig when we flew it around. I am constructing a setup for counterspringing the arm for light cameras that will be attachable. The sled is totally adjustable too. There are multiple attachment points for the monitor and any batteries that one needs to use. Top plate will attach the RED camera, follow focus and shadowbox with no additional plate needed.

The low rig functioned perfectly. The 'Hyperdrive' flew the unit around... It was actually a lot of fun and I didn't even use the vest padding... yet had no fatigue whatsoever. I can see a lot of potential in this unit. Because of the design of the Hypercam, it fits into thin places and between thin objects also. The geometry of the shock absorbsion is in a direct line with the movement of the cameraman causing a highly effecient shock cancellation.

I purposefully overbuilt the rig for a long and lustrous life of camera work with little problems and all changes possibly needed by Hyperactive Studios already built in to the unit's initial design. It's capabilities will open up a new world for our film company as it can get shots from new angles, with heavier loads, and at greater speeds than anything else I have ever seen can. This unit is FANTASTIC. I am very pleased that the concept and design worked as I had hoped. I am excited to use it for Blair Media this weekend in San Francisco.

It all folds up and comes apart and fits into one suitcase too. YAY!

I can hardly wait to use it on Netherborn.

BTW Mark, I found the Netherborn script you gave me! :)

I have some connection on the costume front, but not sure yet. I also have an alternate graveyard, if the Oakhurst one doesn't work out for some reason, but Oakhurst is my first option.

Somehow 'alternate graveyard' sounds wrong... HA! There is a good graveyard in Clovis at Villa and Hearndon with big headstones and really large trees. May be good too.

I know some Scots from the Scottish society. (As I am Scottish...) If you strike out on your end let me know. You know, you have to have Gordon plaid. No Campbell! Ach Mon.

I will shoot some teaser photos of the Hypercam that we can post without losing the patent rights tonight with Matt.

After reading the cool script, I can see the shots you are referring to where a 'creative' fly rig is needed.

Yep! that does sound wrong. The one that I am looking at (if Oakhurst is out) is at the end of Shaw just west of Academy, right across from Clovis Lakes/WildWaters. I like it because it too is in trees, but it is set above the road and if shot properly, we won't get street traffic. I really like the one that you referred to, (my wifes aunt is buried there), but there is so much traffic and I think that it would really draw to much attention to shoot there.

As far as the plaid goes, I will shoot what I have access to.

I am glad you have scouted out the graveyard out in Clovis as that is a lot closer to all than up in Oakhurst. The sloping hill and the small chapel in Oakhurst is very nice for scene composition though. Plus afternoon sun creates a really pretty shot up here. Glad it's not my call. :undecided

Yeah I am still on the fence. it is a major scene, but once I go through the list, I should be able to get a good feel for the feasibility.

I will talk to MATT tomorrow and get him specifics on the wire rig set up that we need and he can relay the message to you and we can talk. I am going to have Jen get a hold of a friend of our to see if we can use a space he has for the GREEN SCREEN shoot when this rig will be employed. We will talk more soon.

Thanks for all of your work. On a side note, we will probably need your generators and another black suitcoat. The one Randol wore on the PUSH shoot... was that yours? M

Ian had mine on but you can use it. (42-44 size) You may use the generators and the extension cords. You may have to get some fuel; regular. Did Matt tell you that I may not be able to make the second shoot week? I am working on getting that off now, but it will be hard to do as it is a military thing. You may want to plan the steady cam shots for the second week of May (first weekend of shooting) as I am sure I can do it that week, but possibly may not be able to the third week of May (second weekend of shooting). :) Hey, If we have to shoot all night for two nights to get all of the steadycam shots I am willing to do it. Bring red bull.

Hmmmm. The light poles may work if they are not too light to take the tension of the rig. If they are cemented into the ground they will work well as long as they are tall enough for the height of the fly you need. Having them down in the Fresburg area will certainly save gas. The back yard will work too if the trees are solid hard woods with sturdy trunks. Again, you need the height of the tree to allow for your actor to fly away at the height you need. You need 15-20 feet of horizontal fly, and the rig needs 25-30ft for an easy fly beyond any green screen. I have 100ft of cable for the top wire and approximately 50ft for the control pull wire. That means we have to add the horizontal length to the two 'down' sides if necessary, shortening. I am limited to 50 total feet of electrical control wire to run the up and down. That is behind the camera. The puller can change direction though, and pull backwards if space is a concern. I wish we could use the inside of a large metal building... (*sigh*). Someday...

Concerns: What are the power capabilities of the church; house? Could we plug things in? (Saves fuel for the generators.) Windy areas that blow the green screens?

Now you know what we are needing.

How high do you need Randall flown? 5 feet up... 10 feet? I have an 8 foot self standing ladder and a 20 foot extension ladder. HA! You just said..."Just HVX'ing it'. Think what a Red-Camera spoiled guy you have become :cheesy:. The HVX is GREAT!!! I don't mind working lighter all day, for two days, and then again a week later. Doesn't bother me a bit. I'm old, remember?

Yeah, your work flow will really be faster now and that is really GOOD! Don't forget to remember to get a good tripod now for that HVX. and get all the batteries you can find.

Matt, with the HVX we can run your hi res monitor on the Hypercam sled. We'll just tape the battery. In the future I want to get a battery belt to go on the Hypercam vest. :kali:

Oh yeah... I have been working out all week carrying mucho weight in front of my body and practicing 'tanking' or moving with no wobble or bob. I ran 3 miles today. I'm ready for the Red but will just 'suffer through' with the lighter HVX. I'm going to sweat a lot in the next few days. :violent5:

Will you be bringing a tarp to place under the green screen on the ground. I have one if you don't.

If you could bring it that would be great.

Loaded up. I have: 2 generators, fuel, large rolling cart, table, 3 chairs, chains, cables, handles, come-along, small step ladder, 10'9" century stand, tarp, 500ft of extension cords, triples, quint plugs, mig welder, metal, grinder, drill, dremel, complete tool kit, winch, saw for limbs, flashlight, LED worklight, Hyper-Fly Rig, Hypercam, sleeping bag, clothes, water, food, and Darth Vader Imperial March button. (These are not the droids you are looking for...)

I am excited to get to see the new Hyper-Fly rig in action. I was even able to paint it in flat black coolness and get the Hypercam low rig attachment mount on it. :D

I dissected the control switch on the electric winch tonight and was bummed to see it is a 4 wire set up. I have to go by Lowes tomorrow and buy extension with 4 wires. The up side is that now I can make the control cable 80ft long.

I'm NOT bringing a ladder... (Trust in Mark... :engel017:)

THAT'S GREAT NEWS! Hey, on the poster, you are a LITTLE busy now. Plus you may want to use some screen grab as the basis of the poster.

I got into the car this morning and then remembered to run back in and get the Hyper-Fly harness! Almost forgot it. If only I had a few things to remember...

The car is dragging on the ground! I had to over-inflate the tires.

Your first weekend of shooting was run really well Mark. As usual, you are a wonderful director and a very talented artist who sees things that aren't and then makes them become reality. Can't wait to see grabs. But, get some sleep first. (I think Matt and I had one hour of sleep Friday night and then only 3 Saturday night. :violent5:)

Your pulling focus on the Hypercam was amazing. Trying to hold it still against the slight force exerted on the rig was challenging. A remote focus would be a whole lot easier on the stabilized cameraman. I wonder how much those units cost?

BTW Shane, I kidnapped your tripod. Don't call the police or you'll never see it again.

I have to say to everyone involved... THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I can't tell how much I truly appreciate all of your hardwork and efforts this project. I am really pleased with the first two days of shooting. We are looking at breaking up the rest of the shoting over a couple more days, because like you guys, I really suffered in the sleep deapartment. I was up from 5:00am on Friday... I slept two hours on saturday afternoon between The Impossible Race Shoot in the morniing and Netherborn shoot in the afternoon and then I didn't get back to sleep until 2am on Sunday. I should be sufficiently caught up on sleep by this weekend when we need to do it all over again.

:D

Oh well.... At least we are making films. It is well worth the lack of sleep.

Thanks again everyone!!

Got your reply and sent you a PM back. Only problem is that of time to construct by Friday! I may have to do the second thing I listed just to save time, but that will work just as well as the more complex first thing listed. :) Foundational supports for the device will differ based on the shoot site. OKAY! PANIC HAPPENED LAST NIGHT!

I got the footage from Shane and one of the 16 GB P2 cards was mostly empty and seemed to have duplicate footage from one of the smaller cards and a whole lot of footage was gone. My heart almost stopped! This was most of the footage that we shot from 6:00pm Friday through til 4:00am on Saturday. I would say more than 2/3 of it was gone. Equalling about 40 clips. Well after some panicked phone calls and trying to sort it all out, it looks like it is all there and the footage from one of the 4GB cards was accidentally copied into this 16GB directory. All I have to say is Redundancies are a key. Shane backed this stuff up to multiple places. The stuff he gave me was copied from one of his back ups. When you back stuff up, that does not mean put it in one place and call it done. With P2, when it is gone it is gone. Once that card is reformatted it is gone forever. So Double redundancies are always a good idea. I feel the same way about audio. We are having Mike record audio to various sources and usually it is through a couple of different Mic sources just in case.

Okay... back to the day job.

I have your next rig half way done Mark. I have to put feet on one side and then put on the center part. I am mooching off the Hyper-Fly Rig for some of the tech. The trick will be making it portable and small enough to get it into a door and transport it on a car. I have a way to greenscreen it with just 2 green screens. It should have ability to move in two axes by your command O' Cylon master. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

If I can't make it small enough to get it into a structure can we shoot outside for these scenes? Actually outside may be good as we can suppliment our house power with generator power for some lighting needs for some of shots. It's your call.

Yes Gary I spelled "cuz" that way on purpose. I know it's supposed to be "because". :D

I'm glad you explained 'cuz'. The 'Correct Spelling Police' are always on duty. :kali:

Dang it! Matt just explained what you want the rig for and I was building it completely wrong. I was almost done too. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG)::zombie_smiley::(:crybaby:

Oh well, back to the Hypercam arm rebuild. :)

Gary I just responded to your PM... are you done or almost done?

Like I mentioned in the PM, the more I thought about the way you were looking at it, the more it grew on me. If it is not to much to ask, lets try both. I also have some ideas where I think both is necessary and also something else that I will share off-line, but I think that it is a good idea to incorporate more than one direction. Let me know if this is doable (doing both I mean).

I missed you too. Your lost artistic flair of flamboyant creativity was a gaping black hole of vacantness in the fabric of our lives on Sunday. :crybaby:

Both your little guys were really fun. I especially liked it when they attacked my Hypercam tool box... while I was running the Hypercam... and pulled out the ball bearings from my extra Hypercam bearing races and were putting together my bolts, washers and hexnuts to make things all over the work table. Instant erector set! No harm no foul though. They are fertile, active minds looking for things to do. I am thinking of bringing a huge LEGO set with me on the next shoots where the only fun is my tools and fasteners. That'll keep 'em busy... for a minute or two.

If you look at the PUSH thread, I am starting to build the HYPERCRANE. I would welcome your input as to what you would like to see in the unit beyond what I have posted. :dankk2: I may be a little late on Thursday as I have a meeting after school. No worries... gotta keep that day job... for now!

Sorry about the toolbox. They are very curious like dad... gotta see how things work and how to make them into something else... I am sure you understand! :D

I will get my mind going on the hyper crane. I would actually like to bring you in here and have you look at the one that we have here so you can possibly steal some ideas from it.

I also want to start thinking of seeing what it would take to build a Push dolly of some sort.

MAN! I can't believe the prices on those go-kart frames with platforms on them. I am not understanding why they just use go-kart style steering and don't use dual steering front and rear... It is easy to set up. You can link it to steer both sets of wheels or just one with the flip of a pin. I will get to that after the Hypercrane is done. :kali:

I want to see the crane at your work. I will compare it to the design I made today. I am thinking of a 4' modular base where the hinge goes... and two modules that are identical of 6' each. Then later I build a third module of 6' also. That will give a: 7', 13', and 19' reach in front of the hinge. :engel017:

Stunning grab. Honestly, it's very pretty. Are you guys also working on a fantasy film?

Thanks so much!

This story's roots (Netherborn) connect somewhat to a fantasy feature that I have been writing (along with my writing partner, Scott Cuthbertson) for some time now.

When this contest rolled around, I struggled to come up with a unique idea, but eventually it came to me and not at first, but eventually a little of the Fantasy feature idea crept into the story of Netherborn. This shot is the first of many of this type for Netherborn and eventually for a spec-trailer for the fantasy feature.

Shane, I dig the flare... when I composite I will most likely add a SUBTLE flare (they can become overpowering quickly) and possibly some volume light streaks for some mood. I thought about taking the tone to a cool color like your comp, but it just felt right keeping with warmer tones.

It is indeed a grab from Netherborn. I am pleased my Dping is working out and with Mark's Fu and his great Direction.....Fantasy becomes reality. We will see how it turns out, but it is going well. Thanks for the compliment! I am sure it bolsters our tired selves.

I think Netherborn will surprise people. It is just cool.

Tired selves indeed. And, we have another late night on Thursday (last one though!) :2vrolijk_08:

Mark and Matt, I just showed this grab to a student who is an actor with Devore talent. I didn't say anything to him about it, just that we shot it last weekend. He said, "Say, that looks like Scotland..." Nice job Mark... if it... IS... Scotland...

I just felt like playing with it. It was for the fun of it. I threw the flare in last minute. I was thinking about fogging it up too, but that was too much work for something that I was playing with! Anyway, I know tons of locations considering I grew up in the mountains above Fresno, so if we need cool forest locations, don't hesitate to call me!!!

Oh and I'll be at the shoot Thursday, but I need to know where, and Matt spoke of another shoot? When and where?

Most of us are meeting here at the station at around 4.... the other shoot is in the air right now because we are still trying to wrangler a location that will work. After we shoot the cemetery, then we will head to my place for a long greenscreen shoot where I am sure my wife will provide plenty of food for us all.

I will let you know about the other tihng when I nail it down. Jen will probably notify everyone about Thursday. I figure we can get up there and frame and rehearse and Matt, who gets off at 5:00 and probably won't make it up til 5:45 will show up just in time to start DP'ing the real stuff. On a side note, I still have your 16GB P2 cards. I dumped all of the footage on that drive and it is double backed up on another portable and one of my internal drives. Do you want to nuke the cards or what. I know you had some stuff on there so let me know.

OMG Mark! I just checked out your grabs. (been awhile since I've visited your thread). WOW! Beautiful shots. I love, love, LOVE that first one of the forest. The two XCU on the book/hand are very nice as well. I love that framing. And wonderful light with the guy in the papasan chair.

Very nice, sir!
