OMG Mark! I just checked out your grabs. (been awhile since I've visited your thread). WOW! Beautiful shots. I love, love, LOVE that first one of the forest. The two XCU on the book/hand are very nice as well. I love that framing. And wonderful light with the guy in the papasan chair.

Very nice, sir!

Thanks so very much. I really appreciate the kind words. I could take all the credit, but truth be told... I HAVE A ROCKIN TEAM!

THE COMPLIMENTS ABOVE ARE FOR YOU GUYS AND GALS OF HYPERACTIVE AND ASSOCIATES!!!

I am finally working on the poster... look for that soon.

Actually, after bending a lot of metal... I got smart and made a single sled universal for all sizes.

We can put you on it too. It is ready to carabiner up and go!

I am loaded up. I put in the smaller generator just in case we need to charge something or run a computer at the shoot sites. I will get food, get Matt and head out to your place at 5pm. I think I remember how to get there.

Awesome!

Actually, we are not coming here first, we are going straight to the cemetery to beat the sunset and then we are heading over to my place for a GREEN-SCREEN-O-RAMA!

I will give Matt directions... it is up by my place and it is actually easier to find.

Lisa wants to know if you have any bolt cutters. I have an old lock on a bunk bed that needs to be cut off so I can put it on Craigs List.

That is not smoke in the poster??? I don't mean what it is in the "film" but in the print of the poster.

And as for Mr. Rogan.... he is very formal, isn't he! He totally confused me when he wrote me a PM. I was like, "Mr. Arabian?" Who's that??? I guess he is just respecting his elders! :crybaby:

What it actually is in the poster is a couple of images from a photo of Jellyfish tendrils layered and Mark-Fu'd together. What it represents in the poster, well you will see when you see the film.

Uh... up in the Sequoias... Like Gary said, we were quite stealthy, but it was so beautiful that I just could not resist.:engel017: Our Co-Producer Jen freaking out at first saying... We are gonna Get Caught! I told her.. don't look guilty and most people will ignore you. By the time we were done shooting most of it and we were looking for that last great shot, she was very bold and we did our last set up right out in the open. No one said a thing... we got a small audience for a while, but mostly, people just ignored us.

You are in the Yosemite valley area, right?

Mark T. Aro
05-22-2008, 08:08 AM
You are in the Yosemite valley area, right?

Nope! Yosemite is in the Sierras... that is where Matt grew up and where Gary still lives. I am right around Squaw Valley at the foot of the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National forests. I am at about 1,000' elevation and where we shot those shots was around 6,000'. All three of those forests border the San Joaquin Valley which is where Fresno is and where we are all roughly located.

King's Canyon! Yikes!!!! I nearly went over that waterfall there. Not on purpose mind you. What a horrifying memory.

I figured that you must be around Yosemite (heaven on earth!) because I know that Gary is living there. I will have to take a look at a map and check out where you are.

I am coming to LA for the Fat Monster shoot. I wish that you guys were closer. I'll have to catch you guys on another visit.

That would be great, Gary.

I've been to Yosemite quite a lot as a kid and I took my wife there a few years ago. I just love the place.

I know they don't do it anymore but they used to build a fire and push it over El Capitan! Man, was that something to see!!!

So many places of beauty there....

I will let you know when I get out there!

They pushed the firefall off of Glacier point... the place where McCauley threw off the chicken to show how far down the valley was. The chicken was unhurt and climbed up by nightfall.

Matt and I have been working on a screenplay for a film that takes the firefall into the script. :D

Yup! Fresno is a great area as we are close to all of these places and have a great city too. There is an area around Fresno with almost any type of scene you can think of. California is a great place for films. :kali:

Mark and Matt: We are having light thundershowers up here near Yosemite right now. I will be going back for my small canopy to shelter the camera work should the clouds burst on us. Be prepared for rain and possible thunder and lightning. This may be GREAT! Perfect weather for Netherborn.

Well we are heading out to shoot more stuff for Netherborn. Hopefully, if we get all of our shots tonight, then we will have a few small pick-up shots and one last scene and then we are done! We have a big VFX shoot tonight, so I had better get my mind right!

We had an unfortunate communication error and our intended shoot tonight got relocated to another spot, but I think that this alternate location is an improvement over the previous one.

More soon.... wish us luck!

I was very pleased with the work done last night. Mark, you ROCK! Matt, your DP-ing was so good, and Shane, great gaffer work. It is so fun working with such a happy, positive and talented crew. Two tremendous directors that work so well together. I got GREAT BTS shots of all of it, delivered to Mark's hard drive. Woooooo Hoooooo!

Mark, cool site! I am glad you notice such places... missed by most people. The structure there was possibly 150 years old too. Neato.

:Drogar-Shock(DBG): I was extremely disappointed Mark... You didn't fly in the Hyperglide. You missed your big chance. Matt did, Troy did, Shane did, I did, Randol did, Mary did, Hunter did... but you... wussed out. Man... How can I respect you ever again? Boy. Well, in the future, you can fly on the HyperFly rig and make up for it. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Seriously, I can hardly wait to see what you are going to do with that amazing footage Matt and Shane shot last night. WOW! It was an adventure just watching it made. Fun,:2vrolijk_08: fun:2vrolijk_08:, fun! :2vrolijk_08:

Last nights shoot went really well. I was a little disappointed at nature for not giving me more sunlight, but oh well. We shot some real nice scenes at dusk and we will need to get some more detailed shots on Saturday and that scene will be wrapped. As far as all of the Green Screen stuff goes, Gary was right... I think it went really well!

As far as "Wussing out" as Gary so eloquently put it... I firmly disagree! I was busy... going through shots and the script with my AD... yeah that's what I was doing! Ah shucks and really wanted to suspend myself and have ever one of you goobers documenting it with a camera... I guarantee you it would be funny and I guarantee that at some point it would end up on YouTube.... No thanks! :Drogar-Dolar(DBG):

Hey talk about screwing around... finish the Godzilla scene in PUSH. You still have that to do before the Rodan VFX is started on. I think that the sumo in Shane's vid isn't as important as the Gitara shot in PUSH. Mothra can wait. :kali: (I always wanted a Godzilla suit to jump and roll around in like the movies!) :love4:

What a great day of shooting that was. It was as if the weather came in just for your shoot!

Yes Shane, I am real happy with Saturdays shooting.

We didn't actually do pick up shots, we re-shot the whole scene. Due mainly to the fact that the whole thing was rushed on Thursday, I just needed the actors to go somewhere that they just couldn't go on Thursday. I am happy to say that we got there in the end and we got all of the different angles and cut-aways that I wanted.

All things considered, it was a great day of shooting.

Got all angles and cutaways... Great day of shooting...

I used to pull the bearings set them on a thick pad of paper towel and spray them with triflow or other such light oil. The gravity and the cohesive forces of the oil pull the dirt out of the bearing and down into the paper towel. Voila! Clean bearings. (Old street luge wheel trick from caveman days.)

The problem isn't dirty bearings so much as it is crappy bearings. Also the wheels are filthy and need a good scrubbing to get the gunk off them to make a smoother ride. By the way "gunk" is a very technical term, I'm sorry if it is over most peoples heads. I'll try to define it for you. Goopy and Junk mixed together.

Mark, I thought you were shooting on the RED. Was that not part of the plan?

It was the plan... I actually had it all in place and last minute I was informed that we would have to rent a lens (1/2 hour before the deadline for FED EX) so it ended up not happening.

Long story short... it was much more flexible shooting on the HVX because we have three of them and our crew has done a lot of stuff together so when we shoot it is play and we just keep going till it is done. The guys with the RED are great guys but it is their business and they are just not as flexible as we are. Personally I like to be able to adjust and change or reshoot in a different place if it isn't feeling right and it is just harder to do under those conditions. You know... with that FREE FILMMAKING mentality, you have to be super flexible.

Anyway, no hard feelings... The HVX with the brevis is beautiful and it really came out nicely.

:cheesy:

hey ALL!

Some of you already know this, but there is no way that I will finish this thing in time for the deadline... not even close. Most of the folks involved knew this, but we gave it a shot. The big thing for me is it got me off my butt and making a film. For that I am very excited. I am steadily working on it and will continue until it is done because it is a fun project and definitely worth finishing, but I just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their support.

I told Matt that I was gonna blame him and PUSH for missing the deadline... (just to give him crap) but to be honest, once I started getting my footage, I realized that it was much more than was doable by the timeframe... with or without PUSH, it didn't make me want to do it any less if anything I didn't think so much about the deadline and more about just getting the footage that I could be happy with. I think that we got there in the end and I look forward to really taking the time needed to get this thing done the way I want. So no it is not Matt's fault AT ALL.... but I am still going to give him crap about it just because it is fun!

Thanks again for your help and encouragement, I will be sure to post images when I have them.

Another one bites the dust.

Well I think this sucks, but it's not unheard of. Will you put it up in the UserFilms section when done?

For all out there... The story and cinematography in NETHERBORN is amazing... It is well worth waiting for. Watching it shot and seeing the creativity put in makes me drool to see it completed correctly, deadline or not. Can't wait, Mark. :) It'll be wonderful.

I too have just noticed it's not in the list. I'll make a point of watching it when you do post in User Films.

Hey Mark, what was the major reason you couldn't finish? Render times? Tracking? ... just curious, and I've certainly been there myself.

Actually to be honest, I just started to see the story go in a place that I really liked which increased the time a lot. That and I didn't get the filming wrapped until 2 weeks ago. I was the only post guy on PUSH so it took me the better part of two weeks (and that is with a lot of simplified solutions) and I just wasn't willing to rush Netherborn so I spent up to the wire on PUSH and I still haven't even started cutting Netherborn. For me this was a get off my butt and make a film nudge. The FEST is cool, but I really just wanted my own film. This is actually my first film, officially. I have worked on a lot of stuff over the years and Matt and I co-concieved, co-wrote and co-directed Sleeper (still unfinished) for me this is my first solo directorial project. The idea is my original idea, I enlisted my buddy Scott Cuthbertson to help me with the script and the great Hyperactive team help me put it together, at least the stuff up to this point. For me though, the fun has just started.

I promise you that even my team will be surprised with the end product. So I am taking my time and I am creating something that should be pretty decent for my first official Directorial debut.

On a side note... totally out in left field Randol (one of our Hyperactive teammates) and I are fiddling with the PS3 render farm myth. I am convinced that it is possible as is he. He is quite the linux guru so we will see what we come up with. Matt volunteered his PS3 for testing (hopefully we wont blow it up! :Drogar-Dolar(DBG):)

I am going to use that rendering source that you pointed us to.

Actually to be honest, I stole Matt's Red. I sicked a rabid wombat on him while his back was turned. It was actually a ninja wombat...trained in the art of biteyokrotch. And the honest reason I did not finish Netherborn is I was dancing and frollicking too much. Sometimes I get carried away and just start frollicking. It is hard to put in words.

That is so not what went down! Matt actually kept freaking out because we were running short on time. In his defense he suggested that we cut a lot of corners on the PUSH VFX so I could get on to mine, but I had already decided that I was not going to rush it....

How do you like those apples! MATT... you mis-quoting, wombat loving, sumo posting fiend! :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Actually to be honest, I just started to see the story go in a place that I really liked which increased the time a lot. That and I didn't get the filming wrapped before the deadline and because a twelve small hungarian midget hampsters with three legs each bit me in the left armpit and left teeth in the wound had something to do with me not finishing it. For me this was a chance to really start jump roping with a live boa constrictor named 'Bob'. I was really into spinning in my chair and shouting "In everyday and in every way I'm getting bettuh!" For me though, the fun has just started. :Drogar-Dolar(DBG):

EXCITING NEWS!!!!! We just got some this BTS shot of Matt's research for his next project. It's called HOMELESS IN FRESNO and is a wacky comedy in the vein of Adam Sandler and Jack Black. Matt is devoting inordinate time to research the role:

Hopefully Matt told you about our little devious plans regarding finishing the 'facility'. When I get the structure done I want your input on specifics of functional interior construction. :)
