03-24-2008, 12:50 PM
I actually spent all weekend working on some slo-mo tests in AE. this is some footage from another film of mine, but it was shot in 60fps, so served well for the test.
I want to have some SUPER slo mo in this, to serve one of the plot points. So been testing. Here's the best one I've gotten so far.
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/timefest/slomotest_best.wmv
It's just about perfectly smooth to my eye, as about as slow as I want it. But when you get fast movement with her hair, the frame interpolation cannot deal with that well. So I am planning on shooting all of the shots that we slow down this much in a really high shutter, at least 120, to eliminate the motion blur as much as possible and get good, clean frames to play with.
I would like to do one more test with high shutter tomorrow night.
I will try to update the thread with some cast photos and stuff tonight after pool.
Kholi
03-24-2008, 01:24 PM
Suhweet. All you used for this was AE?
What was the shutter at? Looks cool, dude.
Mark Harris
03-24-2008, 01:42 PM
Well that is a 1/48th shutter. Timur had shot that for me last summer and we never planned on slowing it down.
That uses AE CS 3 to slow down part way. Then I bring the slowed-down footage into Vegas, and slow it down more. I've experimented a lot and it seems like this two-step process gets the smoothest results. Taking 60FPS to, I dunno what, 200? What does that look like?
Kholi
03-24-2008, 01:49 PM
Probably pretty crispy. I thinks i'mma try it
Jack Daniel Stanley
03-24-2008, 01:51 PM
looks cool!
what's the new footage duration vs. the old?
can't you take (NEW LENGTH ÷ OLD LENGTH) X's 24 to get the approximate new frame rate?
Mark Harris
03-24-2008, 01:52 PM
tomorrow I will post my AE settings and stuff if you want to mess with it
Mark Harris

looks cool!
what's the new footage duration vs. the old?
can't you take (NEW LENGTH ÷ OLD LENGTH) X's 24 to get the approximate new frame rate?
Yeah, I could. Ultimately I am eyeballing it. I don't care what the rate is for the film, as long as it looks right, but I am just curious.
Jack Daniel Stanley
03-24-2008, 01:57 PM
...I am just curious.
me too! :)
Mark Harris
03-24-2008, 02:01 PM
Well, the AE remap is like 400%. Then I render that footage and bring it into Vegas and slow it down to 25%.
So 800% slowdown, I think altogether? From 60FPS original footage. So 480FPS? It is pretty frickin' slow...
Here is the other clip where she moves her hair real fast and it gets a little squirrly. I hope the higher shutter will help eliminate that.
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/timefest/slomotest_best_2.wmv
If not, it's plan-B: All actors in shower-caps.
smashedburrito
03-24-2008, 02:15 PM
wow that slow-mo looks awesome.
Jack Daniel Stanley
03-24-2008, 02:16 PM
60 X 4 X 1.25.... the final frame rate you are emulating is 300fps!!!
It's cool at "any rate" just getting a ballpark for future reference
Mark Harris
03-24-2008, 02:19 PM
where do you get 1.25? In Vegas, I slow down TO 25%. So it's 4 times slower again. Am I crazy?
But 300 is good. Like I said to the eyeball, it is about as slow as I want to see some of that stuff.
Jack Daniel Stanley
03-24-2008, 02:29 PM
Well I'm really bad at math, I was thinking slowing it down 25% made it 25 percent longer, not 4 X's, hence the 1.25... dunno though
Wouldn't slowing it down by 400% make it 4 times slower, just like in AE?
Mark Harris
03-24-2008, 03:02 PM

Yes, I slow it down TO 25%, which is 400% slower than 100%.

Couple of updates. Thought I would post the cast:
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/timefest/Linnea.JPG
Linnea Mohn.. She's a super impressive performer who does all kinds of stuff, from playing in like 5 bands, to acting, to VO, etc.
http://www.linneamohn.com/
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/timefest/sasha.JPG
Sasha Andreev, another talented actor. Here is his IMDB page:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1682551/
Sam Landman

Here is a myspace page about him. He's doing a small bad-guy part for us.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=43866374
Here is our make-up guy, Crist(This guy is TEH SHIZZLE):
http://www.metamorphosismakeup.com/
And we are looking at this guy for the music. From what I described to Joe of what I wanted, he suggested we talk to this dude:
http://www.myspace.com/cteaser
Joe works in a sound studio recording bands all day long, so knows some good musicians.
Joe deserves all the credit for putting this team together. He sent me footage and reels to judge the actors on, but he's the one getting this whole thing in gear on the Minn end.
I fly there on thurs. We shoot fri, sat, sun, and I fly home Mon.
Very excited!!!!!
I tell you, I am tempted to pack Timur up in a bag and move to Minn. Seems like sooooo many cool people there to work with...

Ha ha, yeah, so it goes like this. After the shoot I worked on with you wed and thurs nights, my body clock was all messed up. So sat I sleep in till noon and miss the bootcamp. Then I just hid the rest of the weekend and wrote on a feature script I'm working on.
Oh yeah, and took a little time out for a massive fight with my girlfriend. So yeah.

Also, wanted to add a word about collaboration. Joe and I have been using Celtx for this project and sharing the project between here and Minn to great effect. I do wish they would speed up the versioning, but overall it's been good. We've been able to organize it all, share it with Horse, etc.
I'm doing the same right now on a feature script I'm working on. A really great tool and it's FREE.

Hell I probably shouldn't watch. But despite the fact that Mark's film may psychically harm us all, I know I still will. :D
Really I'm sure it will be top notch filmmaking and that's the real reason to watch. The fact that it may erode the moral fabric of society as we know it is just kind of a side benefit.

Gee Jack, thanks. I think. :)
Well, I am confident this will be a step up because as a director I am focusing on some things I usually don't. So it's a chance to improve in certain areas.
I am in Minn now and half drunk, so it's starting out good already.
Joe and I have been running around collecting props, meeting with the make-up guru, and are all set.
Also met with the lead actress and am very confident about her commitment to the role.
Joe's put together a fucking dynamite crew. Can't wait. Grabs tomorrow night!

We just talked through the edit and Joe made some suggestions, but overall we are very in sync on it. Except that part where Joe insisted on the shot of his dong with the Groucho glasses on it.
JOE: "But it's so perfectly lit!"
ME: "yeah, but it doesn't belong in the story."
JOE: "Yeah, but look at the lighting!"
Frickin' DPs...
Going to lock the cut today so Joe can start on the sound design.

I think the cut is getting close to being locked. I went through last night and made some more tweaks, tightening up moments, stretching some others, making sure all of the beats are being hit right. Probably going to tweak over the next week or so while joe starts on the sound design. Then will go back and perfect the EFX shots.

Yeah, I think we are very much on the same page as far as style goes. And we didn't introduce anything majorly new into the workflow. I've been doing P2 all year, so we got that down. Might not be so smooth with a red in the mix for the first time. :)
Just listened to the first bits of sound design. They are DA BALLS.

What did you edit your Red footage on????
Matt Sconce
04-24-2008, 05:59 PM
I cut the entire thing on a PC with Uncompressed 2K TIFF sequences in freakin After Effects. I would then render out a WMV to see how the timing actually was due to no playback in AE due to the size of the files. It was tedious...but it ended up working.:nads:
Mark Harris
04-24-2008, 06:00 PM
Yeah, I just went back to your thread and found that. I saw that you got denied Dell credit. That suuuuuuucks.
That's rough, even on my brand new quad core PC with 3 gigs of RAM, AE pushes it. I'm doing some time remapping and we will be CCing in AE on this one.

Wha ? You were in horror fest how could you not know that?

Is he a real guy? (or gal)?
Jack Daniel Stanley
04-27-2008, 01:46 PM
He's a real guy. There was a lot of speculation to Movie Master being someone's alter ego but it seems like it's just a user name.
Scary Stuff and Hairy Stuff were alter egos made by other members in response to Movie Master.
Hairy Scary Fairy was a film that Hairy Stuff and Scary Stuff were supposedly making, but it never materialized. Some people claim that footage from Hairy Scary Fairy was in fact used in my Love Fest entry, "Dead Beautiful".

I was just thinking of what to do for sound at that part, then I started listening to some different music I had. I came across a cd a friend of mine gave me of his band from the '60s. I started listening to the tracks and realized some of them might be appropriate. Then I heard the one I used, Bingo, I plopped in protools and smiled for the next ten minutes and high fived my intern.
Just finishing the sound mix this morning. I'll upload in a couple hours.

Everything is shaping up perfectly. Music is in, sound is done, edit is done. Next we just need some VO and cc.
We can't work with that steadicam operator next time though, he sucks.

Ha ha, well I think he would be better if he's just listen to the director and use a lighter camera. :)
I am actually working on that shot this week, and tonight hopefully will have something much prettier to put up for you to see.

Update. Joe has locked the sound design based on the locked cut. It's pretty amazing. He also dealt with securing the rights to our music, which I thank him for because the music he found really is perfect.
Only things left to do are:
1) Perfect the EFX, which I am doing this weekend.
2) Record some V/O and add it to the sound mix. This will happen when the lead actress is back from touring with her band.
3) Color correct, which I think we are going to do in Apple Color.
Very excited about this film. The experience has been smooth down the line and it's coming out really well.

Ha ha, well I think he would be better if he's just listen to the director and use a lighter camera. :)
Well, he's too much of a geek and wanted the extra latitude of the larger camera.

We should all be intimidated! They've got a bunch of pros helping:shocked:
Sheesh, I'm just an amateur. Can't compete with that.
Oh well, I'll bet we'll all learn a lot from the Fat Monster crew anyway:happy:
And most importantly, It's an honor to be competing with so many well put together films this time around. Plus, it super fun.

Dude, your movies are much more planned then my joints. Even this one was rushed because of the limited time we had to shoot with the actresses. I was able to get a 3rd day but still, this runs in real time so its not fancy at all. I think yesterday was the fastest I have ever worked, actually I think everyone mentioned it was the fastest they had ever worked also. 1 take and off to the next shot. Next shoot should fix a lot of the stuff we cut and missed though.

Disclaimer: I like watching movies. End of fame.
Well, ya know, having chatted with Beat in the cafe and learned a bit more about him, AND Hiphop, I am really looking forward to seeing his short. I love the NY settings and Mark Harris's stuff (& crew) is always a keeper so that's always a no brainer.
Yeah so, just make 'your' damn movie. I'll (we'll) watch the damn thing and...I'm pretty sure...enjoy it...damn it. :) That's all that matters.
Cough...well...that and the rent..cough...

Hey don't feel so bad, we had a generator that only could handle 3000 watts so we basically lit everything with 2 lights max. A 2k and a 650w with a soft box thrown in for close ups. At least yours has nice lighting from the little shots I have seen.

Joe put the VO in place and it really helps round out the film, makes it feel complete. Now we're just working on the CC and one more composite(unless I come up with more to do) and we are done done done.

I thought I'd share some insight on the lighting i used for R.P.D.M.
Lighting doesn't appear to be much of anything anything in the pic.
It appears as if the room is lit by the two table lamps and the bar
lamp behind the couple.
It took 7 lamps carefully placed in the room to create this effect.
Here's what I used to light this scene:
1 4bank diva (camera right) Key light (simulating lamplight)
1 2bank diva (camera right) fill as actress walks toward couch (again lamp)
1 2bank diva (camera left) fill light (yep, you guessed it, other lamp)
2 Daylight balanced practical bulbs in the lamps (on dimmers)
1 200 watt curly-q bulb behind liquor cabinet
1 whatever bulb I found lying around in the liquor cabinet (very warm tungsten)
Had I had more time, I would have flagged the kinos off of the lamps. So, I'll probably take the hits off the lamps in post.
All lamps (except for liquor cabinet lamp) are daylight balanced and I shot 3200k. Thus the blue effect.
I'll post some more stills and more explanations in the next few days.
Until then,
-Joe

Next installment of "how I lit this"
This is a moving shot, hence the slight softness of the image.
Alright, from camera right to camera left:
1 Arri fresnel 150 with full CTB coming in through window at the top (right window)
1 2bank diva with daylight tubes coming in the main part of the window (right window)
1 daylight curly-q behind piano (with diffusion)
1 Arri fresnel 650 with full CTB coming in through window (left window)
1 Daylight balanced 200 watt bulb with diffusion taped to ceiling in middle of room (on dimmer)
1 4bank diva as key off camera left (the actor it is keying is off camera now, but we land on him later in the shot.
We smoked up the room also. (obviously)
Again, all lamps are 5600k and I shot 3200k for blue effect.
One thing I would do differently next time when shooting blue like this is shift the image in camera to a little more green. Everything turns out a little pink when you shoot blue on these Panasonic cameras.
Can anyone identify the DVX user in this pic??????????
That's all for now. More later.
-Joe

Nice, keep these coming!
But Joe, you have yet to explain why the last MXF file is a CU shot of your Mushroom-Tip. I mean, I know you love the HPX and all, but...
