View Full Version : "RPDM" by Two Bears One Cup

I loved "RPDM", but I got to be honest, it's my second favorite in the competition behind "O2". However, your film had stronger characters, and more atmosphere than O2. On the other hand, O2 had a more approachable plot-line.
Nevertheless, I must say, after having watched all ~70 films today, except O2 and RPDM, I didn't like much of the rest. There were 4-5 more that were watchable, but RPDM and O2 are miles ahead their competition. My honest opinion.

Mark, this is definitely my favorite film from you. This one felt very polished and pro.. It totally had a director's vision applied to it.. lots of minor things here and there that made me feel like I was watching a directors movie, not just a movie.. (hope that makes sense because I can't think of any other way to describe it right now)
Acting, lighting, camerawork were all top-notch. I love the lighting effect for the shotgun blast and that is a wicked practical effect at the end with that wide shot of the body... sick.. :)
You got one of the highest ratings I've given out so far and it's totally deserved. I can't wait to see what you'd do with a feature and a decent budget.

Wow, someone remembers my friends Mike Petro and Carly.
Oh yeah, when you said 'Two Bears One Cup' I assumed you were an Indian.
As in , 'Two Paws' (which was my former bosses name, serious) I guess you meant 'Two BEERS One cup' ?
See how that takes a different meaning?

That's funny. But you gotta read it real fast "twobearsONEcup" and then, it becomes the best name ever.
Aaaaaannnnd...
Do you really not get the reference?
Mark + Joe = totally gayzers, burly, hairy (well, last one doesn't apply to Joe)

Hi Mark
Sorry I don't have time for a more in depth review, but I thought this was great.
You managed to take the audience on a convicing ride into a slightly askewed reality, with some real skill. I think it's one of the most brave entries into the festival. It's not often I see a really unqiue idea that grabs you, but also succeeds on all other fronts too.
Top marks guy. The best ideas are really clear and simple, and watching this is a lesson to me to try to remember that.

In my opinion R.P.D.M. is a much stronger film than o2, not to mention more entertaining (is that still something people look for in films?). I'm not taking anything away from o2, becuase o2 is well made and looks great.... it just falls short in the story department in my opinion. I compare it to The Moment After in that respect, because both are well made, beautifully shot Red films, and both just aren't fleshed out enough in the story department.
Those are my top three films of the fest btw
1.R.P.D.M.
2.o2
3.The Moment After
Number 4 is Four (no pun intended)

happygobo (8:42:07 PM): there was a nice color change after the gunshot though

lol. i gotta tell ya, we all got on the chat and were like "this is going to be awesome", and you were the first on the docket. After we got done watching, we realized that it was a drastic failure. If it means anything, we all felt like we failed you.
But it's your fault to begin with, there's only so many times we could have said "this part is awesome".

This has landed itself at the top of my list. Absolutely stunning in just about every which way I can think of... I'm in awe. The concept was brilliant and novel - execution was twice that. Cinematography, acting, editing, direction.... RPDM is definitely something to aspire to. This film took a lead pipe to me and beat me senseless.
In other words: cool flick.

Hey Mark,
This is my top choice for the fest - I only gave out two ten star ratings and this was one.
My only issue with the film was that I didn't care for the shotgun blast effect - I think I get what you were going after there, but it just didn't work for me. A little too stylized, for my taste, even in the context of the rest of this film.
Joe (Conrad? I don't get it), the cinematography was top notch, and Mark, I think you did a fantastic job all around. I watched Constance, but never commented - I thought that film was really strong visually but was lacking in the story, and this was a SERIOUS step up.
If you don't win this fest, I will be shocked. RPDM really stands out in my opinion. While one or two other films also managed great technical work with a great story, your is so highly developed stylistically where others are not. Kudos, and looking forward to your next project - I hope it's a well-financed feature based on the strength of this.

Thanks for checking us out, Will. I appreciate the comments.
It's funny what you said about story and Constance, because the things I was working on in each film seemed opposite to me. In this one I focused almost exclusively on visual storytelling, and on my compositions in particular. As where in Constance I had let some of the compositions get a little flabby because I was working mainly on characters. But someone commented in some other thread about good short films being about one event, which might have helped R.P.D.M., because even though there are flash backs, there is really only one thing happening. As where in Constance I think it needs more time(even though it was 10 min) to flesh out those characters and that situation.
But you are right about the visuals in that film. It was shot by the amazing Timur Civan.
Conrad is Joe. :)

So I watched this again last night and loved it all over again. My wife, whom I got to watch it this time, turned to me afterwards and goes 'well that was professional!'.
A few tiny things. First, the shotgun. Dude, you're skills are too good to be using a cheap plastic p.o.s. gun like that, it looks really fake. Real shotguns are $250, go get one. Failing that, its not hard to find someone who has one. Scared of using real guns? I'm sure there's a good airsoft and not that plastic one. Also about the white rope, is she really going to kill him? I didn't think she was since its a joke that a woman of that size could choke a guy with a cord like that, but then I saw another comment earlier saying it should have been piano wire. Hmm, if you were trying to say she was going to kill him then yes it should have been a different item.
Love the off-kilter cinematography! It really does it for me in those moments when they go high and time slows, very well done. I wish you could have had a Red or Phantom and gotten some 100+fps stuff in there to really crank it.
I'm beyond amazed at the prop guy you got to do that corpse, freaky sht there man. Adds an amazing value! Also great work on the makeup, especially that scene where the girl is soaked in his blood. Btw, did the lead actress actually cut and dye her hair for this movie?
Amazing efforts, thanks!

The gun was an airsoft gun, blame me for the fakeyness, I've never shot anything with a gun in it, or even a gun for that matter, so I don't know what they're supposed to look like.
We got an amazing makeup artist to help with this http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0050698/, he just slapped a wig on her and worked his magic.

Mark Harris
06-27-2008, 08:57 AM
Thanks Shawneus. That actually is an airsoft gun. I don't have any problem with a real one. But I think we were trying to get it as cheap as possible is all.
As for the rope, yeah, I guess so, but when we were shooting that scene, I was on the ground under the actress, holding the rope so she could really pull hard on it. And it hurt like a bitch. I mean, in reality, it could easily be used to strangle someone. I don't quite understand why people think she couldn't...
I guess the shininess throws people off, but anyway, it is what it is at this point, so just one more thing to look for next time.
I too wish I had had a red to get 120 out of the frame rates. We are planning on shooting our next one on RED, I think.
the guy who made the corpse is a genius make-up guy and ALSO did the black widow make-up on the actress. She did not cut her hair, that is a $20 wig with Crist's magic applied to it. He gave her remarkable detail too. In the CU of her hands, you can see he made dirt under her nails, he gave her thin little veins on her face, a nice big scrape on her knee. I had mentioned these things in talking to him about it, but actually never imagined the detail he would go into on them.
Yeah, he rules.
Did you see a full on grab of the corpse? Here's a grab:
I just wanted to throw up another word about just how amazing our make-up guy was. Not only did he do a great job on Linnea, but he also did the "corpse" for us. It makes a very brief appearance in the film, as I had storyboarded it.
But Crist went ahead and built it so that we could shoot it from any angle if we wanted.

I think this is one of my favorite ones of the Fest.
I only have one little nitpick, and it's the plastic looking gun in close up. When you had the focus racked it was fine.
What I would have licked to have seen is when she was using other drugs, it would have been cool to have a different shutter speed to get that strobe like effect like in saving private ryan or gladiator. Something to think about.
Good job. Thanks for making this.

I wager it was the light required to get it to look right and then the difficulty of matching it with the RP and normal scenes.
Mark Harris

well I don't think so. We had TONS of light on set, even for the 60fps stuff. I think it was just something we had discussed and then forgot about. Once we started shooting, we went kind of gangbusters for three days, running from one set-up to the next.

This was one twisted ass film, and I loved it. Great job, guys!
Excellent story, cinematography, score, audio, talent, FX, etc. The list goes on....
The VFX on the guy's skull being all shot to crap was AMAZING!!! That said, my only actual quip with the film would also be that section, most specifically how (based on the angle we see the shooter at in relation to the victim) so much brain matter & blood was able to fly BEHIND the shooter like that, onto the wall & floor. Eh, small detail, so no big deal ... just curious. :)
Great ending, and all around I give this one a 10! Thanks for keeping me engaged throughout.
Mark Harris
07-02-2008, 05:35 AM
Thanks for stopping by Norm.
Yeah, the blood. Well, we rigged this system, meaning bottle full of brains and blood, to squirt on the actress when the gunshot goes off. So we did it, and the blood and brains flew clear across the room and all over the opposite wall. But we did not have time to do a second take.
So..
but when I saw the shot, I was mainly all right with it, because of the balance to the picture that splatter gives.
Next time :)
Norm Sanders
07-02-2008, 10:47 AM
No, I agree, it gives it a good balance for sure ... especially in the framing. I noticed we never really SEE it splatter on her face ... just a flash/transition and BAM it's there. Was that editing choice because of how the rigging turned out, or were you planning to cut it that was & never really SHOW the blood/goop blast her in the face?
Like I said, SUPER SMALL nit pick. This was an incredibly unique film in the fest (like yours usually are), and I completely enjoyed it.

Well we did shoot her getting hit with the brains, and with the light cue for the shotgun blast. But in the actual shot, the light cue was wrong, so the actual shot of her getting hit was not usable in the film. And like I said, we only had time to do this once. :)
Which is fine, because it's pretty nasty and I was on brain duty and my aim wasn't the best(evidenced by the blood on the wall behind her).
So overall the shot didn't come out great, so we cut around it.

Mark Harris: That's correct. I'd had this vision in my head about what I wanted to bring to the screen for a while now.
FM: You did a great job with the female lead.
MH: It was tough casting her. We had to find someone with the strength and courage to really bring the character to life. I feel we accomplished what we'd set out to do.
FM: Absolutely. Tell me, what's your general views on the filmmaking process?
MH: I want to bring a wide gamut of emotions to the screen through the grammar of film. It's difficult at times, but when you achieve it, it's exhilarating.
Joe: Hey Mark, don't forget the brains and guts! We're poo pooed if we don't have those!

What. This film made the grade? I thought this DVXFest stuff was serious business for voters with discerning palettes.
Just because your movie had a great story, I guess... Well, that and it looked completely professional.
So just because it looked great, had a great story... To be fair, the breasts and the killer soundtrack were also nice touches, I guess.
So, what? Just because the film looked great, had a great story, breasts, and a great soundtrack -- that's somehow magically "good enough?" I guess that's enough for some people.

Priceless!
I didn't get to see this one until just before voting ended on round one. It wasn't in the original zips, I guess. I had to make a specific "internet trip" to download it (we don't have internet at our place), and it was well worth the effort. Very cool.
Congratulations on Top 8 Status!

Another great film. This was outstanding. I'd love to come up with something more constructive instead of just gushing, but hot damn this was good.
It looked great, sounded great and I really liked the acting.
Feeling a little dirty never felt so good! Great job!
Another movie that inspires me to keep pushing to do my own stuff.
Though I have to admit I'm feeling a tad intimidated at how good some of these are, like this one.

hey joe,
just a personal peeve, not sure if i should even discuss it since its all so very subjective...but i started a "HPX500 is video - say it like it is" thread which led me to watching the film.
congratulations on the accolades!

haha! watched it again.
joe, mark - love your film it really is the future of entertainment...
ok back to the HPX500 -
likes :
low light performance
better resolution
better battery
more P2 slots
many more but these are the first things that come to mind.
dislikes:
Videoish movement: not sure how to quantify this in terms of technical mumbo jumbo but the speed ramps and the general movement at normal speed looks so video.
The highlights bloom in the dirtiest way possible, This i've noticed on almost everybody's footage.
contrast ratio could be better.
Ultra sharp images reveal TMI - too much information!lol
i really do not want to see pores in my talents wrinkles.
I suppose you could just glimmerglass or FX it but still they are not miracle filters.
I know post can soften/vignette it but i shoot music videos and i want to be able to be able to play with DOF while on the shoot.
imagine how much fun you could have with a lens baby in front of the HPX500...
I could go on but i' tired and really have to go to bed man (its 4:24am here in mumbai) and i have to be on set in a few hours.
g'nite
