I was thinking about using some of these UFO LED camp lights (http://batteryjunction.com/ufoledcaliwi.html) as an on camera light like someone h as mentioned before, but also I was thinking about making an entire lighting fixture out of these. Buy 5 or 6 and wire them all together with a tranformer for the voltage, and you should have very light efficient cool (<- most important) lights.

There is a video of just using 1.

Lasts 30 hours. I think it'd be worth a shot to try to make a fixture out of it.
Let us know what you do. This actually seems like a pretty good idea.

Several threads already. Very blue light, hard to match with anything else without gelling. PrompterPeople, I think, sell an upgraded version where they have soldered in color-correct LEDs and made other modifications that make it more "pro", which sells for about $150, I believe.

Take a look at this....

Probably not practical as an on-camera light, but has definite possibilities for a lighting fixture.

I saw some stuff like that too. LED's are pretty cheap, but they are quite cool... so thats awesome.
I don't think thier color temp is going to be a big deal, ill just white balance. And outside at night (if its night when I use them) it shouldn't matter.

I bought one for the hell of it. I'll do some messing around with it once I get it and post results. If anything, I'll end up with a cool led light.

ya good idea, but I just dont like the blue'ish white light from the leds. Its missing the warmth. Same with the fluorescent lights.

I got one of these little things and not to my surprise, it was pretty worthless. It puts out a ton of light for it's size, but it's incredibly blue. Definitely a cool little light for $12 though.

what about gelling them... if they're really bright it could work

Not aware of anyone who's actually gelled one to success - you're probably looking at least 1/4 CTO and by then, you're cutting light output enough to make it not worth it IMO. They're cool little lights, got mine for about $12 with shipping but in the long run, they're not that well built and unless you're balancing just to that light, which really defeats the purpose of an on camera light unless it's your only light source, it's just WAY too blue.
I'd rather experiment with that $25 Luxeon LED tactical light and some diffusion. Lot more light output in the need you have to color correct.

ps - I actually use my UFO light in my portable VO box now. Works great for that AND makes a good tent light (just like they claim!)

as soon as you put a gel in front of the UFO light, it becomes completely useless.
