What's your Budget? I'm having some trouble reaching target with mine.

Tips & Advice

Zak makes a good point here. You should do your budget as if you were paying for everything. Give it a value. Now see what you can defer or get in as kind or even donated. If you've got your camera, what is the typical camera rental? What would the rental be on the rest of your equipment. Take this opportunity to practice doing a real budget. You should come up with two numbers: money out of pocket AND value of goods and services.

My keyboard tends to hate both the British & American Currency symbol.

My last project ended up being quite inexpensive, because it turned out that a lot of the stuff I rented was given free instead. I'm hoping this will turn out the same, but the scope of the project is much bigger. We'll see...

Really interesting results to be fair. Was expecting most people to be in the $2000 or over catagory.
I think catering and transport is the main annoyance when it comes to budgets, unless you have to get your equiptment to like I do.

budget is likely in the ball park of $12,000.... but every penny is deferred. :)

I'll edit the first post soon, but just wondering. For those of you, who dont have a job, if any at all. How do you manage to fund certain things for your film?

Ki-Ki, you might want to take a look at this thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=126188). It shows some of the actual costs for some of the Love Fest entries.

Zak and Blaine, that is a very interesting idea. That would definitely be a good practice to get into. Thanks.

I write for the location; calling around, seeing what I've got access to. Keep the cast and crew as small as possible so the food costs are low. Borrow gear from friends. For each and every short I've ever done, it's really been nothing but the cost of food. I'm just not in position to plunk down $500 for a location or spend 1K renting lights so things have to be kept as simple as possible. Certain stories can be told in this manner, others can't. For every four or five short ideas I come up with, usually only one is able to be produced at an 'almost' zero budget.

My only cash expenses are straightforward expenses: Food and Travel. All equipment, crew, cast and locations are deferred. Out of pocket = $600. Deferred = $5,400. That comes to $1,000 a finished minute

It depends on if you include the camera- I'm in the market for a new one so in that case like $2600, but without the camera like $100 if that.

Currently the funding for all my projects comes from all of 3 sources, the charity of others, my savings, begging my parents- then presenting them with the numbers and how I plan to pay it back/work it off.

Food was the most expensive item on the budget. I think that came to about $60. Borrowed a lot of gear and asked a lot of favours.

B-Nice cost me 20 dollars. Subtract out the cost of a pizza. My lowest budget film ever.

Budget: $0 U.S dollars.
I had filled up on gas 2 days earlier. The cast was warned to eat before arriving on call, so I was good with food.

rented a hotel room, and bought several meals. Either just over or under $100.

Is a bit hard to define, since i used my XL2; and the only thing i paid was the food and beverage; plus did you count only the materials/grip things but not the pay for workers (crew/cast)?

Anyway:

Camera ( two days) : 240 € (120/day)
Tripod: 25 €
Fuel/transport for everyone 50 €
Tape: 7 €
light: 10 €
Location (estimated) 200 €
Editing/music (3 days) 250 €

It cost me a couple weekends I'll never get back, hours of editing trying to decide how to make this work and many sleepless nights thinking should I enter this thing or not.

$25 for everything. Hoping to stay under this time I always seem to go over by $2 or $3 times are rough and budgeting is important these days. That is half a tank of gas...LOL
