I'm going to be filming and working on some other peoples enteries. I like to film alot more than i need, have more ovf a variety in editing. So just for an idea. How many tapes do you use when filming? If you do even use tapes..

I'm going to be filming on Mini DV. So was wondering if any of you knew anywhere online where you could order in bulk? Anywhere on the cheap, or where you can get discounted tapes?

tapestockonline.com

Most narrative work that I have done has between a 12:1 and 15:1 ratio. That is 12 - 15 minutes of footage per one minute of actual screen time. Documentaries have a much, much higher ratio. Hope that helps.

For my Lovefest Entry we shot 6:1 on P2.

For mine it'll be around 5:1, since there is almost no dialog. But in most cases a 15:1 or higher ratio is best.

For a filmmaker, I know boll0cks about ratio's, Unless its 2:25, 4:3 or 16:9.

I'll buy a few books one day.

Thank's Herbal, checking out site now. Seems to be for US only at the min.

Those ratios are

tape/film/P2/whatever time : actuall screen time

so basicly, a 5:1 ratio means that for every unit of actual finished film screen time you should have 5 units of media.

6 minute film should have 30 minutes of tape for a 5:1 ratio.

I used 3 16-gig P2 on the last short.

on dramatic work i generally shoot around a 4 - 6:1 overall. most shots are 2 or 3:1 and the occasional shots are 16:1 :( .. gotta love those ones. but thank goodness for P2 it doesnt cost me anything but time.

I usually shoot 5:1. More than that and you end up beating a dead horse. Action, animal and kid scenes may require a higher ratio.

Especially kid sceens with dialog. Action scenes usually require atleast a 7:1 ratio, and thats WELL PLANNED OUT ones. Mine usually take like 15 takes to get it right.

..i think my worst ratios come from complex camera movement, or other technical side issues. its generally my own fault when a shot is taking longer to get in the can.
