Is this the camera that can switch between the two formats? If so, i'm very interested in buying it as i have european and american tv clients.

Yes. But you can also buy a Canon Xh-a1 or a XL-h1 with the optional ntsc/pal compatibility.

Also, the EX only records HD, no SD.

truth is i have never been a big sony fan, but i would love to have a cam with the option for both ntsc and pal.
i really just want to buy the hvx200 but it doesnt offer that.

have you liked what you saw in the canon?

Standards switchability is not the reason to buy the EX1 - there are other more conventional options if that is your main concern. The EX1 is a tape-free HD-only camera - you need to be ready to handle the workflow (ie having a newish laptop to offload the cards, and software that can handle the format - such as a Mac with FCP 6.02), and the best reason to buy it is the quality of the output at this price point.
You don't need to be a Sony fan to buy this camera - I wouldn't have considered buying any of Sony's previous cameras, mainly as I didn't want to be stuck with HDV.
On the other hand, you have to be a serious Sony-hater if you dismiss this camera without thorough consideration.

pretty weird to hate a brand irrespective of how good a product is. Unless you are doing it for ethical reasons.

my doco project that am shooting in LA right now is on 24p, all my previous work has been UK 25p. Great that I can shoot to match the region the project is destined for. This is to go onto 35mm.
