Does anyone have a recommendation as to where I an buy an EX1 and a couple of 16GB SXS cards? Online is fine as long as it isn't "grey market"... I do live locally in Los Angeles and don't mind buying locally either. I'm looking for a decent deal.
Anybody?
thanks in advance.

Hey Michael. I live out here too and bought mine from BandProDgital in Burbank.
Tell David Rosner that Daniel Boswell sent you. He's a great guy and took good care of me. I paid $6500 and that was last year so it may be cheaper now.

8 gig Cards @ $335
I just noticed that NewEgg (NewEgg.com) has San Disk 8 Gig SxS cards for $335 plus $6 shipping.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820171316
That certainly seems to be a step in the right direction, and fairly quickly too! Bring on the $500 16 Gig or even 32 Gig cards!

That doesn't say it's a SxS card so it won't work. That and the Lexar cards are just Express34 Solid State Drives. the SxS cards are faster and have a different spec. they are cheap enough to try one and see though.

Hi Robert,
I think that I can safely say that you are mistaken. If you'll click on the "Manufacturer's link" on the NewEgg website, it will take you here:
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx?ID=1046
And if you will read the description offered by San Disk, you will find that they SPECIFICALLY mention the Sony EX and similiar applications. Have a look, both via this link and the link to it on the NewEgg website.
Nice price, isn't it?
Regards,
Carl

Carl,
That's a great find - especially since they are not listed as SxS cards anywhere in the description. But if you look at the picture of the card, you can see the SxS logo in the lower right. And on the reverse, the card lists XDCAM-EX recording times.
Definitely a step in the right direction.

Well I stand corrected, poor marketing on Sandisk's part. Great price though. I look forward to the day when more manufacturers get with it and we get better prices for media.

Robert & Matthew,
Things seem to be becoming a little strange or perhaps just in flux, with steps in both directions! I just checked NewEgg again, and not the 8 Gig San Disk SxS card is not shown as being for sale. Withdrawn I think they said. The I did some Googling and found other links, Adorama, I think it was, for the 8 Gig card along with a mention of the 16 Gig Card! Wow, the San Disk site did not even show that.
http://www.beachaudio.com/Sandisk/Sdx-016g-A101-p-131583.html
and for the time being $645 sounds acceptable for the moment.
even the 8 Gig price is OK

How about 2 (16 Gig) for $500.

It's usually pretty tough to beat B&H for price and reliability (you won't get a gray market camera there).

Thanks for spotting this. After reading this I had a Japanese friend call Sandisk directly here in Tokyo and Sandisk have confirmed that YES this card can be used with the EX1! Great news! They also said it is not yet available in Japan, only available in the U.S at the moment.
P.s. Maybe this news should be a new thread?

I just talked to the Sony rep. and he said they will have a 32 SxS memory card next year, if any one can hold on that long. The price will be, of course, "Sony's price!"

Found nothing but flash cards (4 pages of them) at the Newegg link above. Where is this elusive SxS card? None of the other links to stores come up with an available product. Another link reports product no longer available.

The sandsik express cards are definately pulled from the Newegg.com page. Maybe someone there screwed up and listed them too early?
They were advertised at about $320 for an 8GB card werent they? Were we dreaming?
Now we can only get them for $499 form Sandisk or $486 from Sony.
Shucks.

I am in the market for an EX1. Where is the best place to buy? I see a huge range of pricing on the Web. $4,799. to $7,900.
Can anyone please recommend a trusting place, that has a decent price?
Thanks, Scott K.

Abel Cine Tech.
$7900 is MSRP, and $4800 would be from a lying filthy scam shop. You're not gonna get it for less than about $6450 from any reputable dealer.

I believe the NewEgg site posted too early. I expect there will be an announcement at NAB about drastically reduced prices for SxS cards.

Bodean,
As I just ordered my own EX1, I hope that you are correct! I can assure everyone that the NewEgg listing for $335 was really there, along with somewhat similar listings at other retailers. Seems that they have all disappeared. Drop prices DROP! It also is note worthy that the 8 Gig Sony cards at B&H are now $400 rather than $500, so the trend has likely begun, I hope.

Looks like they're only dropping the price on the 8GB cards. $399.99, vs. $875.99 for the 16GB. Usually, the larger card is not quite double the price, but in this case, it's more than double. Bring on the 32GB cards!
BTW, my rebate 8GB card arrived via UPS today. So now I have two 8GB and one 16GB card.

Yes,
Like yourself, I really could use 32GB cards doing event work.

Hey Basspig,
How long did you have to wait for the rebate card?

I'm wondering what their new promotion/rebate is going to be. I've been waiting for their rebate period to end (3/31) to see if
a) They revised the camera and fixed some of the issues.
b) They included more storage (2x16GB cards - one included, and one upon reg.)
c) A 32GB became available.
d) They dropped the price of the camera by $500 (as if! it's already terrific value)
I haven't looked on BH or Sony to see if they have a new promotion.

Hey Basspig,
How long did you have to wait for the rebate card?
I think it's been about 3 weeks since I sent in the rebate. Funny thing was, an hour after the card arrived, I get a postcard in the mail saying that my rebate cannot be honored because of duplicate entry (two weeks ago, they e-mailed me to say that some sheet was missing, so I sent the missing sheet and Xeroxed the other stuff as proof of continuity.) Anyway, a lot less than "8-12 weeks". :)

Yup, five hours of battery and four hours of media should be enough to handle most any wedding event if you shoot conservatively and not just everything.
The thought of offloading smaller cards to a laptop, with the attendant confusion going on at such events just worries me. I've already botched some test clips that I offloaded and used the wrong method of moving some files around, causing the database to be thrown out of synch with what was really stored on the disc. The Clip Browser can no longer see those files and I get a bunch of black thumbnails with X's in the corner instead of video. The .MP4 files are there, but the XMP file got overwritten with new data from another card. Oops... Better to have it all on a pair of huge SxS cards, so things don't get messed up.
Also the Clip Browser is a pretty competent file manager. Use that to move, copy, delete clips. I was able to combine a spanned clip by copying one card's folder to another, after copying both cards to a RAID array. The split spanned clips get recombined nicely. So all file management issues are resolveable.

They do have a new rebate... and its exactly the same. Ends in october.

Now I'm glad I didn't wait for NAB. Just got mine last week. Didn't matter either way. I know I read some great stuff here but when I got the camera in my hands I still couldn't get over how great it really was. Love that glass...
