Haha, Thanks Kyle! I went through some location scouting today. I believe I have the three locations I need. I will go with Mark on a tour of an abandoned school Thursday with the Fresno Film Comissioner, Ray Arthur. If it suits the scenes, I will have all locations chosen. Next comes figuring out how the heck to afford insurance. I only need it for two days on city property but 1 mil liability insurance goes for 680.00 minimum and no one will give me insurance for just two days...only 12 days. Oh well, there are some options for waivers and other special event insurance. I will let you know how it goes.

Great to see you guys back in these fests ... looking forward to what you come up with.

Regarding insurance...if you plan to do other filmd throughout the year then you might look into getting an annual policy. It doesn't cost much more then an shorter term policy, and you can usually pay it monthly (yes, another monthly bill, but easier than paying all up front some times). Just make sure you can change thr recipient throughout the year as you'll need to do that for whichever particular location needs the insurance provided.

Thanks Ted. It's nice to be back. I feel like we have been in a fog for a while. So much going on and barely time to take a breath.

Hopefully Matt and Jen wont injure me to badly, but the funding front is coming along on some of our projects. We have several people looking at the whole slate and we are getting a lot of good feedback, but there are also some who are interested in one of our ten. I know I speak for both Jen and Matt, we really could careless which one gets funded first. It may be one that I will direct, one that Matt or Jen will direct or one of the projects that we chose to earmark for two-Directors. Regardless, even the lowest budget ones in our slate will allow us to quit the day jobs and it will get us started.

We had lots of good movement on the fnding front happen last week and supposedly there is at least one big follow up meeting at the end of the week. We shall see!

We will keep you guys informed as much as we can.

Best of luck!

MATT? GUNS?

Matt Sconce
03-05-2008, 02:56 PM
Cliff, The guns are full metal blowback airsoft guns that use Green gas to produce slide action when the trigger is pulled. They give the exact motion of a real gun and allow you to put in muzzle flashes in post and not have to fire blanks off on location. This helps to avoid the police and upset neighbors, while keeping the kick and weight of a real gun. Here is a link to one I bought.

Didn't I see on your User Films thread that your co-producer closed funding and that the only question was when the funds would arrive? Can't you use that as security for a loan?

Matt Sconce
03-18-2008, 04:19 PM
We all hope this is what occurred and that the check would come to our producer speedily, but as most of us in this industry know, money is never real until it is in your bank account, and many promises cannot be believed until the promised result occurs. It is sad but true. I am blessed to be working with Mark and Jen who are different than this, but it is still prevalent in the industry. If that money occurs, then Mark and I will definitely head upwards from financial oblivion. For now things seem bleak, but as Mark and I love to quote:

When you get into a tight place, and everything goes against you till it seems as if you could n't hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that 's just the place and time that the tide 'll turn. -Harriet Beecher Stowe

We will just keep holding on and we will ride out this tide and remember these trials as moments that refined us and shaped us into the Moviemakers and people we want to be.

Nice to see that the v16 arrived.

I appreciate the trade Matt! (The V-16 we are using is IMG's. It is working well. We played with it for hours tonight balancing the Red. RED did not send the correct attachments for the camera, so my engineering father is having to develop a way to mount the camera to the steadicam and enable a way to make the follow focus mountable and functional. Good times!!!

What part did RED not send? And what problems are you having mounting the FF?

They did not send the attachment for the rail system so we cannot use the Red Rails or put it together to have it shoulder mountable. We are having to adapt a Cavision rail system to hold all of this and use a Red rock follow focus, which is not at the right height on the rails to interact with the Red lens. Lots of preparation work, but my dad is an engineer inventor guy and he is machining these parts today for tonight's shoot. We should be good to go. I will post BTS shots after the next two shoot days.

You mean the red bottom plate? you'd still need the red 15mm adapter mounted on a universal mount to get the RR FF up there.

Also, why 2k 2:1?

THE SHOOT WAS GREAT!!!!!

Well I don't know about that, but I will tell you that the shoot went really well. I know Matt will have a lot to say, but I will put a couple of comments down and that those would be BLARE MEDIA rocks. Justin and Ian, were amazing. They brought their RED and many toys and they were awesome. What a relief to have talented invested guys to run the camera and handle lights and so much more. They were quite the blessing. We have one more weekend of PUSH shooting and then we will move on to Shooting NETHERBORN. I hope we don't were them out before we get to NETHERBORN!

We shot a few NETHERBORN shots, but really we are going to film the bulk of it later after PUSH.

Yes it was very interesting. I believe it all started with not having the right plate or something from RED. Eventually Matt's dad had to manufacture something, which I think in turn effected the whole rig. In order to get the right balance in the end, they had to add more weight. Matt's dad handled the Stedi-cam... man he rocks!

hee hee... well, I would have been floored if there actually WAS light being emitted from the RED (other than the glow of the halo around it!).

That would be pretty sweet, maybe a built in ring light? My dad created a great plate which we used to hook up the Red to the Tripod and Steadicam and the plate allowed us to turn the Cavision rod setup backwards, which allowed us to use the Redrock Follow Focus (courtesy of Shane Foster "Rope the Moon")

The ability to have the low light capability of the Red and the amazing DOF control blew my mind. It also has a nice weight to it making handheld shots much less jittery. It was interesting shooting with a camera that is worth more than my combined possessions. It definitely is worth it though. The 18-50mm lens did great and it is not fast in comparison to others out their like some superspeeds, but handled the light beautifully. Those guys at Red have me hooked for sure. When I can afford it, I will buy one no questions asked. It is that amazing to work with.:thumbup::thumbsup::grin::beer:

I think we are going to get away with 1 terabyte-ish. We are capturing off of a compact flash card to two hard drives and a laptop harddrive as well so we have triple redundancy in case one goes down. We then offload to a terabyte drive and export tiffs from Red Cine. 2K is about 25mb per frame and 4k is exponentially higher. We will need more space for 4k. We only are exporting the take we want though which will save on space as Redcode so far is only 60-70 gb for the first weekend shoot.:dankk2:

Sorry about the questions... I'm curious about how RED's workflow will slow things down if you don't have all the proper support hardware or software. I guess its a matter of transferring to an editable format and conforming in the end.

Audio was recorded into the Red and also into a Digital system. I cannot use Red Alert sadly because I am on a PC so I will have to Sync audio the hard way. Making it line up with lips, actions, etc. I open the clips with Red Cine (It works on only one of our editing stations) Hopefully two when my XPS system comes in April 5th.

We export Tiff sequences and edit those.

It is pretty sweet to have this large of an image to work with, especially as we move into post after this weekend. The only issue is the workflow. It is killing me that we only have one system able to export footage. I just ordered a Dell XPS Quad Core that should solve that problem. It comes in on the fifth of April. I can then edit from home which is a must because of our new little baby girl (1 month old on thursday).

The Red is amazing. No adapters needed, Ridiculous DOF. The LCD is crisp and allows you to achieve critical focus, even on a shoulder mount setup. Despite what others have said, the camera is quiet. It is able to shift into silent mode when recording and then have the fan turn back on after recording stops, so sound is not an issue.

I also think the actors fed off the amazing images the camera was producing. When you can see immediate playback on a high def monitor and it looks like a movie already, you just act better. It is inspiring. I HIGHLY reccomend people to beg, buy, or borrow their way into using a red for a project. It is definitely an eye opening and schema changing experience.

Much appreciated. I have access to a Red camera and would like to know the trials that others are going through before considering it for a feature. I'm most concerned with how much an Indy filmmaker can take advantage of the RED workflow during post on a minimum budget.

The fact you are using it on a short film will give you invaluable experience before using it on a larger scale project. My hat's off to you.

That 4K image is fantastic.

It seems very workable sofar. My system specs are good, but not stellar and the footage plays beautifully on it. For speed it may be smart to edit a smaller version and then render a larger version for the final, but so far I really haven't seen the need for it. We are doing a lot of post work and I think the real slow down will be in After Effects. However when we get to that point, I may just bite off shots on a shot by shot basis.

As matt mentioned before, we are rendering to frames and work in TIFF sequences. That concept is probably foreign to most non-VFX experienced folks, but for those of us that have been doing this for a while, in the early days, that was the only real effective way to work with renders and animation... in sequences. That said, my mind is already wrapped around that concept and although it can be little daunting to work with that many files (if you are not organized), there are some advantages. When rendering large scenes, if you render to a movie file of some sort and your system crashes.. you lose the whole file and you don't usually know about it until the next morning when you check on your render. With frames you just pick up the render where it crashed instead of starting from scratch.

Again, when you are dealing with just editing and you are not doing post outside of your editing platform, the above concept doesn't necessarily apply, but once you go into Combustion, After Effect or anything along those lines, you may really benefit from working with frames. The key is to be organized and not to dump all of you frames from seperate renders into one directory, but make sure you put them into relative sub-directories.

Okay, enough of the tangent... in short, I think that the footage will be fairly workable.

Just throwing the invite out there, but if any of you DVXusers wants to come to the last shoot this weekend (Friday 6pm-12ish) and (Saturday 6pm-12ish). You are welcome to show up. We could use your help and you would get to be on set and see the Red and our team in action. PM me if you want to come and need directions. RSVP if you are coming so we can expect you. Saturday is the day I would recommend as it is the day with action steadicam work.

Too bad I live on the other coast. I would be more than happy to give a helping hand.

Mark and Matt thanks for explaining much of the RED workflow. I have a fairly elaborate editing setup because by trade I've been involved in 3D animation/motion graphics since the early 1990s. Its a good part of my bread and butter. The RED workflow sounds like the perfect fit for me. I can see working with 72 to 90 TIFF frames for a 3 second EFX shot. Obviously, more shots makes the process more time consuming, but its a small price to pay to work in 4:4:4 color space.

Good luck this weekend.

I am super disappointed that we couldn't make it to the shoot last weekend, and now I'm back in LA. Boo! I worked with Ian on a 35mm feature a couple years ago and saw Justin at NAB last year. Would've been fun to catch up, and scope out the RED!

But I shall let Roque (from 'The Dumb') know about it.

Good luck guys!

Hooray! One of the Producers, Troy, has a Mac and kindly exported the audio for my selected takes. I got Red Cine to work on my home computer and now everything is in full swing. I am exporting Tiff frames and then I will import them into premiere CS3 where I will punch in the audio. I will then make a cut (after this weekend of course) and get it to Mike Aro for Sound. I will then lock a final cut and get it to Justin Durban. In the mean time, I will be working with Mark Aro on the visual effect shots. Awesome!

Hmmm...not bad...
I am watching a scene export right now in Red Cine and the 4k tiffs are only 48mb per frame. That is exactly double the 2k tiffs. I was told they would be exponentially larger but that is not the case. This is much more manageable than I thought before.

Matt Sconce
03-27-2008, 05:25 PM
UPDATE:
WHAT WAS I THINKING??

48mb a FRAME! I just totally ran out of space after exporting a few scenes. Lets see....calculation time....
Two of the shots I was just exporting were 1500 frames. 1500x 48 =72000 /1000 = (72 Gigs for one scene)

Now, that was quite a long scene but holy crap! I will need at least a terabyte for this...most likely two. The space may be huge, but the quality is astounding me. I will keep you all updated as I encounter new challenges.

Matt Sconce
03-27-2008, 07:24 PM
Blech! I just tried to get what I needed off of one of my externals (I cannot afford another at the moment) and wiped it clean. 300 more gigs of free space for the monster that is 4k tiffs. I might just go 2k tiffs if I do not have enough room.

Matt - I suspected your workflow would be too slim for 4K material. That's why I barraged you and Mark with questions earlier in this thread. This also has me thinking about using RED in a 2K format unless I have the space and fast drives to handle 4K.

The good news is that you have 4K footage you can conform to your offline edit in the finishing stage. Look into XML export possibilities.

I would still shoot everything you can at 4k. You get prettier pictures when you downrez to 2k, and the RedCode is not that space intensive.

Yep this is what we discussed last night. We are also giong to stay 2k unless we find that we are not getting enough detail for a shot or something like that and really don't this that this will apply, if it does it will most likely only be applicable to detailed or complicated VFX shot where more detail will make keying or compositing easier/better looking.

So far the 2k is looking Sweet! It also renders much faster.

For the shoot tonight we will be without power and it is the first time on our city location. We are going to use two generators and if all comes down to it....car headlights "Gasp"! It probably won't come to that due to the awesome guys at Blare Media and their light rig. Yay for them! We took pictures of our actor's face makeup and I am glad we did as we have to re-create it tonight, and tomorrow. We originally used shoe polish but that tried to destroy our actors face with burning horror...:zombie_smiley:so we are going to see if we can replicate the look tonight with make-up. We shall see!

The workflow is super easy on a mac. Drop in your 1k, or 2k proxy files into fcp, switch the codec for the timeline to redcode and there is no r endering involved. If short on time just switch the codec to prores and render out. If you're wanting to conform to a higher res look into crimson which can take your fcp xlm and generate a pull list for redcine so you're only rendering what is in your final project.

:zombie_smiley::zombie_smiley::zombie_smiley::zomb ie_smiley::zombie_smiley:
I was walking throught the room of the abandoned school autoshop, when I heard something move in the darkness. Knowing this could very well be the home of some people, I was very cautious. I shifted my gaze quickly to the noise and discovered it was only pigeons roosting in the room. I sighed with relief and then...stepped in something squishy...I immediately knew that it was not pigeon poop...I looked down and to my horror found the reality of the situation...I had stepped in HUMAN poop. That is a first for me. We cleaned up the are and proceeded to film in it. Nice atmosphere I must say...besides the fecal elements...The End.:zombie_smiley:

I'm sure you'll find a solution with flying colors. I couldn't imagine editing a feature with the REDbeast.

score.. it's best if I could get it as soon as you get a locked edit. that would be ideal of course. I'll be out of town from April 25th-May20th so either sometime before then, or right afterwards. Timewise... I suppose it depends on how much music you need. I could probably knock out a first draft of the film if I worked a solid day on it. (which, with my new baby in my midsts, translates into about 3-5 nights) :)

I'm sure you have your own CC already in mind ... this wasn't to offer one, just playing around with the fancy grab :)

Thanks! It is a bear to edit at the moment, but hopefully it will be cut soon.:violent5:

How are you cutting your short? In After Effects? Isn't that limiting? Just wondering if you have developed a technique under constraints RED created.

If I had exported the tiffs in 8 bit instead of 16 bit, I could have editied in Adobe Premeire Pro CS3. I am cutting in After Effects now to keep the 16 bit tiffs, although it is time consuming. It actually is not that limiting, it just takes some tricks to see true timing. It is a much longer process. If it does not go well, I will convert all my tiffs to 8 bit and edit in premiere.

You are fortunate to have started earlier in the fest. You have the luxury to discover and experiment before the deadline. I bet the next version of Premiere will have 16bit editing to match AE.

It better! Haha.

Here is my workflow:

-I am Exporting 16 bit 2k tiffs out of Red Cine.

-I am then importing them as Tiff sequences into AE CS3.

-I am cutting and pacing in AE and then exporting to small wmvs where I review and see any changes I want to make.

-I then make the changes.

-Since the cips are already in after effects, the effects will be done at this stage although a cut will be sent out pre-effects for Sound and Score. Sound will have to be retouched after some key effects are done.

-I will then render out uncompressed AVI to Premiere Pro CS3 where I will combine the audio and the score.

-Finally, I will export to uncompressed Quicktime and open in Quicktime Pro where I will convert to the H.264 of the Fest.

Whew! Tedious, long, but beautiful end results...hopefully!

You work so hard! I was lucky enough to see some of the rough cut and it is coming along really well. BTW, do you know what sleep is?

The shoot went wonderfully. I second the fact that the guys from Blare Media were amazing. The Red Camera perfomred gloriously and brought a freedom to help me express exactly what I wanted in this first shoot. Thank you to everyone who helped and put in the hours! Mark, of course, I couldn't have done it with out you. You Rock! I look forward to Netherborn Shoots!

Here are some Behind the scenes photos!

I posted this again to explain how well the steady cam worked. I carried it off and on for over 8 hours all night long and the unit performed flawlessly. I ran forward, backwards and sideways with the unit. Nice job on the design. The Red camera set up was moderately heavy, and added to the weight of a mild steel camera/follow focus mount I fabricated for the shoot. If anyone is running a Red camera in the future, have two camera mounts, one for the Red camera on the mounting plate and another under the mounting plate. Run the steady cam gimbal all the way up, and drop the base plate down to around 30 inches below the camera set up. We were unable to mount the Red camera battery pack down on the base of the rig as one should due to the Red battery cable being too short to reach down there. We had to mount it on top and this caused a real dastardly rise in the center of gravity of the whole rig. To counter this we used an 18 inch wide adjustable dumb bell with two 2.5 lb weights set perpendicular to the operator to give the set horizontal inertia. That addition also lowered the center of gravity for the whole unit to where it became very smooth. The Red had enough weight on top of the steady cam unit that it tended to oscillate horizontally back and forth slightly until we added the lengthened extensions for the lateral stability to the base of the rig. If the Red came with the longer battery cable we could have saved nearly 8 pounds off the unit. That adds up through an 8 hour active action steady cam shoot!

I would recommend using the Glidecam V-20 and not the V-16 for a Red camera steady cam set up, as the extra spring tension would have been a plus. We ran the springs all the way tightened and it was still slightly heavy for the well-built unit. Also, tighten the waist belt to where you can hardly stand it, but keep the center adjustments on the vest only moderately tight. This tends to place the weight on your legs and gives you greater longevity on the rig when you have to keep shooting many takes with great physical exertion.

AW SHUCKS! Thanks Gary!

I have to build some wire work rigs and I have a couple of designs floating around in my head for a gimble/sled device... once I get it worked out, do you think you can help me build it?

Of course! Mr. fabricator to the rescue. Have diabolical mind/cutter/welder - will travel. Seriously, I have ideas on your wire rig too. We have to talk. You will have to spell out to me what type of movement you need your actor/set to exactly do and we will build the device to perform the task.

1 day service! :D

I'm going to try it out soon. Right now I don't want to change anything in my FCP project until I wrap up post on this latest project. Should be a few more days and then I can experiment but I've heard good things. Also, sorry I never called you back; with Brandons shoot and all this post work piling up from other projects, things were a little crazy the past two weeks.

With all that floats around in your head what's a few more designs...Hmmmmm?

What are you thinking with gimble/sled needs? (Chomping at the bit here...)

BTW, added more parts to the pile that will become the "Hyper-cam" today.

Can't wait to see it...

As far as the sled thing, I will make a 3D mock-up so we can see it with a camera in the computer. Once I have a working model I will draw up some basic plans and then you can make practical sense of them. How does that sound? Should be next week some time. Still working on first pass of Fish Bomb...
