Okay, I want your opinion on these stills from the title opener. The premise is Growing or fading light with text revealed. Here are the many different versions. With the knowledge that this movie is about time and action, which title is most visually fitting in your opinion, and Why? Thanks!

I like C or D... cause I like retro font and the LCD font has been used a little too much. I would go with black unless you treat the text with a growing motion blur or something to spice it up.

C or D Matt. I like C as it conveys a lot about what is in the film, but it is a little too bold a font size. I like D as it is really clean and the font is correct in size.

Option D for me  I hope that glowing gradient circle in the background is pulsating or growing from the center out or something cool like that ... get Mark on it he does that fancy FX stuff doesn't he? :)

I guess it would depend on the movie. I like G personally.
Does the movie really have to do with a button? If so I would probably make a 3D joint.

In the midst of this all, Mark and I just found out we were nominated for an EMMY for a Educational Weather Program we made for children. We find out if we win it on May 10th. I would then be able to say I am an Emmy winning Cinematographer/Editor. That would rock. Okay...back to Push...I will hopefully finish a large chunk of the VFX tonight.

Well, Today I will be working on a couple more VFX shots. I am editing at 2k in After effects and not using proxies. It is handling it okay, but the effects are slow going. They look good though. Green Screening is going well, I need to clean up some keys with garbage mattes and then things will go more smoothly as the green screens were not lit evenly enough it seems. No significant hurdles yet except for the size of the footage being worked with. I will let you know how the next couple days go.

WOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!! EMMY NOMINATION!!! YAY!!!!!
Congratulations on your Emmy nomination Matt! :D
I see your amazing work up close, and as your father am biased...but it is neat to see that you are being recognized by peers and the industry as well. Even to be nominated is a tremendous recognition of your abilities as a director, cinematographer and editor.
Other news...
I finished the complete shock absorbing arm of the HYPERCAM over the weekend. The unit is articulated with three moving joints, each with two bearings instead of the normal one. The rig will be adjustable from 1-80 lbs. (although I don't want to carry 80 lbs!) I am have made major improvements to the vest and articulation points, and am making a new 'Hyper-drive' method of control the as far as I know hasn't ever been used. Shoud work well for Mark's shoot of Netherborn.

The RED is pretty Awesome! I am definitely going to purchase one when I am no longer a starving director. Until then...thanks to Justin for the use of the RED it is MUCH appreciated! I love that Push involves a lot of us here in Fresno, Fresno is becoming a growing film community and it is nice to start to unite instead of struggle with each other to get ahead. If we all did this, we would all complete many more projects and they would be much better quality. Thanks for the compliments, the cut is coming along nicely. Stay tuned for possible new screen grabs...perhaps...we shall see...

The Red IS awesome. Justin and Ian are great and really talented. Fresno is a really inviting place to shoot with amazing areas visually, and has a firm talent base for even feature length projects.
BTW, really liked the effects you showed me this weekend. Nice! Man, you really know your stuff Matt.
I will be glad when the Red is easier to use with windows formated machines and one doesn't have to perform as much work to get stuff edited as you have had to do. Just wait, that will come. :2vrolijk_08:

Hey, thanks! I look forward to the easy Adobe Workflow days as well. It looks like we may be almost there. Cineform released 4k and NAB will tell us if it converts R3D code (Native Red Raw Code) to AVI. If so, We will be able to use it in the future. Adobe should just get a plug in though so we can edit the actual R3D code in Premiere Pro CS3. I'm going on my lunch break. Time to edit some Push!:kali:

Got some rough cuts rendered. I am still not happy with the timing. AE and non real time playback make it very difficult to time the cuts correctly. I will be making notes on my cut then going back into AE to tweak things. The ending effects are definitely no where near done yet.

Yeah it does. We tried it on many systems and it works on my PC, which is the one Matt has been working on and I can get it to open footage on my laptop, but you can't play anything. The bottom-line is that I think that it really need processor and RAM power so it takes a lot of resources to play nicely. But it rocks when it works.

The big problem is editing at all. :B The 4k will only play like two seconds before it starts stuttering on the Core 2.
I'm gonna upgrade my Quad Core at home to Leopard or 10.4.11.
How far off is PUSH from finishing post? You think the insane post is gonna kill your deadline?

No... we will totally make it! Matt is doing most of the work... Most of the shots are fairly straight-forward and he had a crash-course in Compositiing and AE work when we did a bunch of stuff to pitch some of our other projects. He did a real nice job. I will handle a couple of the rougher shots and probably do some tweaking on the shots that he does, but KUDOS to Matt for going into this head-on without flinching. I think part of it is the GEEK-FACTOR though... he just had to see how things were going work/look etc.... he couldn't wait!!!
But I don't blame him... I feel the same way!

Matt, maybe you can do me a favor and run a little test...if you don't have time, no worries. I don't have access to photoshop on my mac right now and I'm curious about the quality of the image when Redcine does reframing.
Render out a 4k Tiff from redcine and keep it native at 4k; bring it into CS3 and resize it down to 1080p. Then adjust your project settings in Redcine to 1080 and adjust to fit the width; render out a 1080 Tiff file now from redcine. Compare the two and see if you notice a difference between the two.
I've been doing a lot of scaling down in Redcine lately and I feel like it's not resulting in a cleaner image. The amount of noise I see on the 4k image is the same as the 1080 scaled image. I don't have CS3, (it doesn't run well on intel macs anyway) and my older powermac is down, so I can't do this test on my own.
I have a feeling that the photoshop scaled version would look tons better.

I saw the same thing before. But, I did notice that REDCine actually outputs exactly what you see in the quality settings. So, if you're working in 1/2 Res High resolution or something like that, it does 1/2 Res HIgh to the output file.
I think you have to switch to Full Res before you output? But, I'm probably wrong.
I exported some footage at 720p and it's got some noise in it, it's also nowhere near as sharp as the 4k.
I'd run that test myself but can't mess with the footage til I upgrade.
Let us know what you get, Matt, if you have the time to do what Geoff suggested.
Geoff_R
04-15-2008, 10:46 PM
I think you have to switch to Full Res before you output? But, I'm probably wrong....
I'm almost 99.9% sure you don't have to do that; the preview/playback settings supposedly do not affect your render at all. But 'Process', Standard, Full, Draft settings will along with the 'Quality' tab.
Matt Sconce
04-15-2008, 11:51 PM
Hmmm....that is an interesting test. I will try it when I find a moment. The display settings did not effect my exports from Red Cine. I'll let you guys know what I find.

After a night of Failed renders, I exported my AE timeline in three chunks of 2K uncompressed AVI files to edit in Premiere CS3. Tonight I will be making all the timing changes, and may possibly have a rough cut ready for sound. If not tonight, in the next several days this will be completed.

well, I don't really need all sound FX. Just base general ones. Even if you took 30 minutes to put in some temp gunshots, blinks, blanks and blicks just to get the correct timing of things not seen off screen. Otherwise, I'm ready whenever and I don't have to wait for after the soundfx guy to work his magic.

I will put in temp sound effects and temp dialogue for you. I would rather have the score before you go as after gets pretty close to the deadline. I will try to have it uploadable for you by Monday at 12:00am. Is that enough time to work your magic? That way, you can tweak things when you get back if needed but will not need to compose the entire score? How does that sound?

the preview settings have no effect on the quality of output, but they do affect the speed of output (how long it takes to render). but this effect is confusing and antithetical. sometimes you want to match the size to the output, sometimes you just want the smallest frame for Redcine to rewrite to the screen as it renders. it is a little hit or miss and there are ways to greatly improve or hinder your render times.

Gimbal is done. Works GREAT. I am now playing with the sled configuration and working into the design: The Hyperdrive (removable), ease of balance, battery mount, multiple mounting positions of Marshall monitor and arm, ease of disassembly, and ability to flip over the rig for low shots. Fun fun fun!

It probably depends on the final price making it comes to, effort etc. It will basically do what the Glidecam V-20 does but MUCH MUCH more...(Low rig, Patent Pending Hyperdrive, new Patent Pending changes to Steadicam Base Structure) and we hope it will do it better. The V-20 Glidecam rig sells for almost 5000.00 without any of that stuff. Imagine if the Hypercam comes out at a 2-3 k cost, and could support cameras up to 40-45 pounds, all the way down to an HVX. That would be nice! :violent5:

My dad created the Hypercam after using the Glidecam V-16 on PUSH. He saw things that could be improved and as a physics teacher, saw some things that could be made easier on the user.
No pics yet as it is patent pending and we need to make sure all those ducks are in a row before it's design is known by all. It's first use with the red will be at a commercial shoot coming up in San Francisco with Blare Media. The hyperdrive will not be completely finished but it should be at least functional by then.:love4:

Okay here is a sneak peak at Hypercam coolness....
This is with an HVX on the Low Rig system. We did not have time to hook up the weight counterbalances so this is an unbalanced HVX rig, with my dad RUNNING! Imagine how well this will look once the balancing has occurred! My dad has done a wonderful job and I am excited to see what it does with a slightly heavier camera balanced properly (The Hypercam was designed for the weight of the Red One plus accessories). Sorry Mac users, I did not compress Quicktime. Maybe next time I will. Angling around corners is intentional.

Well, the Hypercam is DONE! Matt and I tested it last Sunday and it is absolutely amazing. With low rig, medium rig and standard rig you have three positions from which to shoot. All with variable angles of shot. As it was designed for taking on and man-handling the RED camera, the HVX we used was a little light. It felt like there was nothing on the rig when we flew it around. I am constructing a setup for counterspringing the arm for light cameras that will be attachable. The sled is totally adjustable too. There are multiple attachment points for the monitor and any batteries that one needs to use. Top plate will attach the RED camera, follow focus and shadowbox with no additional plate needed.
The low rig functioned perfectly. The 'Hyperdrive' flew the unit around... It was actually a lot of fun and I didn't even use the vest padding... yet had no fatigue whatsoever. I can see a lot of potential in this unit. Because of the design of the Hypercam, it fits into thin places and between thin objects also. The geometry of the shock absorbsion is in a direct line with the movement of the cameraman causing a highly effecient shock cancellation.
I purposefully overbuilt the rig for a long and lustrous life of camera work with little problems and all changes possibly needed by Hyperactive Studios already built in to the unit's initial design. It's capabilities will open up a new world for our film company as it can get shots from new angles, with heavier loads, and at greater speeds than anything else I have ever seen can. This unit is FANTASTIC. I am very pleased that the concept and design worked as I had hoped. I am excited to use it for Blair Media this weekend in San Francisco.
It all folds up and comes apart and fits into one suitcase too. YAY!

YAY!

I was a little jerky on the shot as the Hyperdrive is so positive that one needs to learn how to 'drive' it. The camera literally points exactly where you want it instantly...sometimes too fast. When one is used to any other steadycam it takes spinning the sled vertical tube to turn it and this is somewhat inaccurate and slow. So, witn the Hypercam Hyperdrive one needs to learn to use a light touch... Which translates into easier work in the long run. As the Red camera is heavier, the light touch will become a normal touch making it easier. Anyone who has run a steadycam for any length of shoot knows: Easier is better!:)

The logos are really nice. The workers at the sticker production shop were really impressed with the art work. One said, "That is amazing design!" In the future re-do the art to have 'Patent Pending' on it somewhere.
I worked until 11pm last night and finished painting the Hypercam, reassembling it, putting on all of the logos and the big 'Hyperactive Studios' sticker and then sitting back and staring at it. WOW! Anyone who knows that these things are would like to have this. I am sooooo happy with how it came out.
And Matt and Mark, it's ours! Start your fertile and crazed minds thinking about what new angles, movements, and styles of shots you will be able to add to your film ideas with this rig.
This morning I pulled the pins, disassembled it and it all fit into my suitcase just as planned. YAY! I am ready for more tests with Matt's HVX tonight and for meeting with Justin and Ian at Blair tomorrow to set the unit for the Red Camera commercial shoot in SanFran on Saturday.

Too True.
I talked to Justin today and I think we are good to go with the score. I am getting him a completely mastered sound edit as soon as possible so he does not have to use my crappy overdub version. I am working on that this Saturday with Mike Aro and expect to have it doen by the following Saturday. I will also be finishing the VFX with Mark in the next couple weeks. Lots more blood splatter needed. Mwah Ha Ha!:kali:
Too bad Justin has to go on vacation for almost a month! I will be nearer the deadline than I wished. Come on dude! You are a machine you don't need a vacation...you don't need sleep...you don't need to breathe..!!!:badputer:

Gary, that's amazing! About how much in parts do you think it cost to make it?
The metal, springs, hardware and swivel joints were not too expensive, but the time was long - over 40 man-hours of labor. I had to plan, draw out, buy supplies, measure, cut, grind, weld, bend, file, drill, de-rust brush, assemble, test, disassemble, prime, paint, reassemble, test, add stickers, and test again.
I have found a few minor issues on beta-testing the rig with heavy weight that will cause more: Disassembly, measuring, fabricating, grinding, welding, grinding, testing, tweaking, priming, painting, and testing... So the Blair shoot in San Francicso is not going to happen.
Fun still? SURE! We will have a rockin' steadycam for very little money.
If one adds up my time the cost gets to be a lot as this is the first one. Others built will take a fraction of the time. I'm thinking to patent and produce this will take way less cost than some of the expensive steadycams on the market and will have way more features for the film maker. It may end up being the useful "all go no show" volkswagen bug-type steadycam ultimately for the financially maxed out filmaker who needs a steady. I will probably sell them on eBay one at a time for a bargain price and keep my retired dad preping the parts.
BTW, it did fit into a suitcase. YAY!

Yup. I am always interested how believable effects and action become when there are appropriate sounds associated with the action. Many film makers don't pay close enough attention to their sound and the result is less believability in the dialog and action. Well, you know that; winning 'Best Sound Design' for Stricken at the Action on Film Festival!
I am internally bracing all four plates on the Hypercam arm tomorrow and initiating a better tubular structural lock on the sled. Should solve that tiny wobble problem. Interesting that it only showed up when the unit was loaded and on the standard rig. Mid and low rigs were perfect.

That is true. Sound is the first thing that will kill a movie. If the picture is a little dodgy, but the story sound and music rock, the audience will forgive you but if the story rocks, the picture is beautiful, and the sound sucks...you are doomed.:nads:

Gary, I thought the images were awesome I can't wait to get my hands on it and play around with it. Already I am thinking... Man we need more than one of these... but let's work out the details on this one and then wait for v2. Once I can touch it and play with it a bit, I would like to talk to you about possibly taking a different approach for future versions. I don't know if you knew this, but Mike used to weld wheel chairs for Sunrise Medical, the Makers of the QUICKIE brand wheel chair and being an avid cyclist for most of my life (closet now... man I need to get back on the bike) I was thinking that we may be able to take some cues from bike construction. We will talk more off-line, but I have a few things milling around in my head that might add to the mix. Again, this is a later version, I don't mean to step on your toes, but you have started something here that is so exciting to my brain. Again, this is much later down the road.
Again, I can't wait to get ahold of it and play around. I don't know if I mentioned but a friend of ours is and engineer that has had some experience with getting stuff pattened. Once we get to that point, we need to talk about that and some of the other things that you have in your brain.

HYPERACTIVE STUDIOS HYPERCAM UPDATE!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
All V2 mods were successful and the unit works wonderfully. Matt and I ran high, mid, and low rig tests and all worked very well. We weighted the sled and ran 10 extra pounds on the base and even with an HVX with weights the arm acted like it was not even working hard.
When I started this project from scratch I hoped to make a unit that would be able to run light cameras and also be versatile enough to haul around the RED camera with follow focus, battery, hard drive and shadowbox.
Well, the Hypercam will do it! YAY!!! It does both light cameras and will do the RED camera too. I even have additional springs that can attach externally to add for uber-heavy loads. The V2 vest is very comfortable and fits like a glove.
One of the neat abilities is an operator can 'drive' the sled at an off angle to easily shoot down at a persons feet from the mid and high rigs and then allow the unit to balance up again to level smoothly.
The really neat addition is the adjustable low rig. I ran the low rig level, and also shot locked in up-angle at Matt walking around with his little baby Makenzie. The rig follows, is steerable with the hyperdrive attachment and can shoot up just as easily from the side of the target even shooting back upward at the target while the cameraman is parallel walking with that target. This opens up a load of possibilities for the director and puts a lot of different abilities into his/her tool kit. Since the Hypercam is so thin, you can literally fly through objects at ankle level, and even shoot up with the ceiling moving behind the target.
It is very stable and sturdy. Since the V2 mods were all internally structural, it looks the same as before but now is downright burly. I am ready for Mark Aro's NETHERBORN shoot now.

Here is a compilation of the first official test footage from tonight. I was amazed at what the Hypercam can do. It is incredibly versatile. I love the angle option on the low rig. There is a moment where I have to do a double take to make sure I am moving sideways in the video, because it feels like the wall is sliding by my babay and I. Cool stuff! Congrats Dad on an amazing design!:thumbsup:

My next project is to build a rolling adjustable tripod base with removable, lockable castors for flat work and attachable dolly wheel sets for rolling on dolly shots straight and in arcs. It will fold for easy transport and have places for attaching things such as batterypacks etc.
It will be the HYPERDOLLY.
When you get to that point, we need to sit with a sketch pad and out heads together because I have some thoughts on that matter that might help.

Ha! I'm at that point soon so fertilize your active brain on the issue.
I saw a unit on eBay from Europe and it was $1500! :violent5: I could make it for $50. BTW, I am getting a 10'9" 40 inch base Century stand to hold the Hypercam on set with the 'Hyperdock'. It will hold safely both the camera on the sled and the arm during breaks and downloads. YAY!

Ha, Thanks. I am taking a little break from steadycams right now. I will be building another Hypercam later this year and will be trying different internal bracing materials. Mark wants two Hypercams for the team.
Maybe I just make up plans and sell them really cheap to those who are challenged in funding but can weld and fabricate... I have to be sure that I am not compromising any other 'art' out there and not infringing on anyone's intellectual property first. :)

The video of the Hypercam evidently had duplicated frames that made it stuttery. Now it is fixed.

That was much more reflective of the test. I am please with the performance of the Hypercam and am looking forward to the RED shoot of Netherborn to really hash out the rig in a hugely demanding load. The Hypercam was designed for that load, and it will be interesting to see how well it does.
Much of the small amount of jiggle seen in the footage is actually me having to work on my own smooth movements and practice 'tanking' in my walking rather than just walking normally. It doesn't take just strength to operate a camera stabilizer but it takes a great deal of technique in how to move to allow the rig to function with excellence. I will need to practice with this rig to adjust my movements to it. Using a different stabilizer on the PUSH shoot required stopping a 'Y' direction wobble, and the Hypercam is different. It has no 'Y' wobble. :)

I am working on the Hyperfly Rig tonight. I am making it so it will have separate ability to pull upward and also to tilt the body. Body harness will be separately 'yankable' at the center of the back. The tilt function will be controlled by waist belt 'Y' tails. This rig should last us for all future flys as it is adjustable to height and distance traveled, adjustable to direction of force, and controlled by only two people; one brakeman and one puller. YAY!

I look forward to seeing the Rough final later.
I am halfway done with the Hyper-Fly rig. I am building a truss structure that will be also able to be used as a flying camera mount for flying the camera above the action with an angle rig. My Hyperdock is now mounted on a Century stand and holds both the Hypercam arm and Hypercam sled perfectly.
I am almost competely ready for NETHERBORN now. I still need a brave 'victim' to fly on the rig the first time...:kali: :violent5: :nads: :cheesy: Troy?

Ha! Thanks. I think it will be fun to get hooked up and launch on the HYPER-FLY rig. We will be using the rig this weekend on the NETHERBORN set. I think that Troy (Oshme - The Impossible Race) Ruff is the first victim. Then as soon as we see no one will die , (they won't... it is really strong!) the actor on set gets hooked up and flown. You can fly on it someday too! I have 100ft of cable so the flight could be really run!
I am finishing the rig today in fact. The sled is done except for the pulley attachments on the top. I wanted to check one more place in Fresno to see if there are any pulleys with precision bearings before I weld them on. Pulleys have to be openable so the top cable will be able to be just set into them.
I am fiddling with the winch set-up and where it will be located on the sled. I want it to be removable easily, yet be centered weight-wise, but as you can tell from looking at all winches, they are heavy on the electric motor side. I am looking at putting in the motor centered by balance and moving the cable via 2 pulley wheels to drop directly centered on the sled. It is all in the angles and minimizing frictional forces. I am running the controls by wire off the Hyper-Fly sled to behind the camera side, but ultimately want to radio-control both the winch and pull cable later.
It will be a nice addition to our film company and will give Matt and Mark a whole lot of other things to put in their films. It will also be secondarily a flying camera mount that will be able to fly the Red Camera and other lighter cameras over, toward, through and away from the action, and will be able to change angles of the camera. It will have an attachment point for the low rig of the Hypercam. Imagine setting the rig on a really long cable and rolling it slightly down grade over a huge battle scene, with the shot view transmitted and the X and Y angles all controllable by radio... Poor man's helicopter shot!
I will be running the Hypercam on the shoot too. Busy, busy, busy.

HYPERCAM UPDATE:
The leverage issues with my initial design of the Hypercam found on the Netherborn shoot will be fixed by this weekend. I just have to move the overall camera weight closer to my body to minimize the angular torque on my vest. My initial thought was to place the spring arm in line with my forward movement... But now I see that placing it so far to the front has disadvantages in creating a lever arm of torque on the cameraman shortening the time for the shot. Since our human (and with some alien... Troy...) bodies are much stronger closer to our torsos, I have to move the arm in.
Since I am a basically as lazy as I can get away with (aren't we all), I will rebuild the device to cause less force on me, and allow a longer shot with less rest inbetween. My warped mind is also spinning around on ideas generated in a discussion Mark Aro and I had on materials selection for the final arm.
The vest and the sled were wonderful though. Tally-ho cut-off wheel... grinder away! :violent5: :badputer::kali:
The Hyper-Fly Rig was a tremendous success. We now have a highly functional, portable, sturdy universal fly rig/flying camera mount for any shot up to a fly of 25 ft up (or down) and 100 feet long. YAY!

For the uninitiated: Top frame: Lead Actor Kenn Arola with Director Matt Sconce directing the Red Camera shot. Kenn is big guy, around 6'3" tall, an Army Iraq war veteran and an acomplished martial artist. Great casting by Matt.
Lower frame shows 'sandbag mounting' of the Red on the floor with cameraman extraordinaire from Blair Media Justin shooting up at the actor. On top of the Red is the large, heavy battery (trust me on that one) and the empty bracket for a hard drive on the rig. In the background are Troy, Randall and Ian... with no heads.

Do you still have any green screen colored paint? I could use a small amount.:) Is there a name of the actual green color I could get at Lowes or True Value hardware?
HYPERCAM UPDATE: I tore apart the arm yesterday and completely changed the axis of flex to perpendicular to my direction of motion, and brought it as close to my body as possible. I loaded it down with 25 pounds of iron and ran around the house, outside, up and down stairs and even jumped with it. It functions so smoothly! I am extremely pleased with the change. Flexion is consistent and steady. The changes are gigantic for me as the leverarm of force applied to my body is now as minimal as possible. I am now finalizing the cushion for the vest back that will give longevity of wear on the rig.
Troy, I am now ready for the cool creative shots you want with the low rig in IMPOSSIBLE RACE, and Mark, you can count on a smooth stabilized camera for the last weekend shots in NETHERBORN. YAY!

it is chroma green. I don't think you can buy it from any store. I still some here but it is not spray. any nice bright green should work as long as it is completely consistent.

HYPERCAM UPDATE!!!!
We used the Hypercam for the Netherborn and Impossible Race shoots and it was a joy to use. It reacted lightly and was sooooo easy to carry compared to the first version. I ran backwards full speed with it and it traveled so smooth that the shots look great. The vest is comfortable and the carrying capacity is extraordinary. I still had it on a low spring tension and was carrying an HVX with Brevis, a follow focus, filters and a box on the end. I added 2.5 lbs to the base of the sled even then. Someday I'll test it with the Red camera it was made to carry. I give it a good 8.5 out of 10. A few tweaks and it will be a 10. Waaaaaaaa Hoooooooooooo!
I delivered the "HyperGlide" static flying rig to Mark Aro's house. It was hilarious 'flying' on top of my '91 Subaru wagon 60 miles as it looked almost as big as the car. I got a lot of double takes and funny looks. It is chroma green too. Ready now for the last pick up shots of Netherborn next week.
Mark is almost done with the VFX of PUSH. Very cool!

I appreciate you checking in. I am excited about this as it is the most ambitious project I have taken on yet (Shot completely on the RED ONE, with action martial arts and way more dialogue than I normally include) I am happy with the way it is turning out and am excited for Mark to finish the VFX, Mike to finsih the Sound, and Justin to get that good final footage for the score. Should be magnificent!

I can vouch for that! Say, I was there on stabilized camera wasn't I?
Matt, what I really enjoy is the way you put all of the important elements of a great script into your short. And, you do it naturally every time. I am biased, but you are a tremendous storyteller. Nice work on this one. I can't wait to see the final production.
New Hyperactive Studios Fabrication News:
With the success of the wonderful HYPERCAM camera stabilizer, the HYPER-FLY flying rig, the HYPERGLIDE static flying rig; I am starting a new summer project:
I am beginning the development of the HYPERCRANE. I want to make a universally useful crane for the studio. I want it to be modular, so it will be able to be used in a room, and also be able to rise between 12 to possibly 18 feet up. I want it to have dual axis movement of the camera on the end; both horizontal and vertical movement. I want it to have camera movement run smoothly and electronically with AC power. I am going to use two or three single tooth worm gear AC stepper motors that will be able to be actuated by two joysticks or a joystick and a steering wheel. I want hi res monitor mounted at the control point. I want it to have its own dolly set and and heavy duty stand and be able to dolly straight or around a curved arc. I want it to be able to have the camera locked parallel, on a specified angle, and also free to rotate in two dimensions while the rig rises or lowers. I want it to be able to be mounted in a moving truck or trailer bed if needed. I have brainstormed it out and will begin blueprints today. I already have all of the parts except for needing some more light steel tubing. I am hoping to build the whole rig for less than $100. YAY! I love frabricating! :engel017::thumbsup:

I guarantee it will cost more than $100, but for help planning I suggest homebuiltstabilizers.com I have tons of research on these puppies, and have built two of my own. If you want some help, or suggestions, let me know! By the way, electric controls are good, but manual is way better if you can get good gearing work done. Electric tends to be noisy, and expensive for the motors. If you do go with electric, you're looking at spending $2000 on just the motors if you want them to be silent.

Good advice Shane. I will check the web site. I already have the motors though, (three) and yes they did cost (somebody) over $3000. I got them off a weed-eater robot a guy made around 5 years ago; because he was a genius, was really, really old and didn't want to weed-eat his yard. He just wanted to just sit with a radio control and a lemonade and let a robot weed-eat his yard. So, he spent over $4000 on creating a one-of-a-kind robot. He machined the gears and stuff himself and they are completely silent. They even have their own built-in sealed oil baths for the gears... which I may or may not use. He ran it once and then died of old age... and I got it from his sister. He was brilliant and had worked on the Manhattan project back in WWII.
I will take your advice and look into both methods of control though. I will keep receipts... If I make it for less than $100, I want you to treat me to a double-double burger dinner at In-N-Out, 'K? If it costs more, I'll treat you. Never underestimate a scrounge like me. :kali::kali:
Did you make your cranes with triangular modules or did you make them with square modules? I have plans for both. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

After that, I will mix a version for you, the amazing Justin Durban! Once all these aspects are in place, rocking will commence.

I made one from square tubing, and the other from pipe, so round. I had to put supports on the round one because it reaches 14ft, and if you don't use some sort of cable support, it will wiggle when you stop the crane giving it a sort of drifting effect. I just did the top, but probably should have done the sides. I also made the pivoting base out of a threaded pipe union. I then took apart some wheels and stole some ball bearings and stuck them in. It worked good, but not great.
Everyone I've talked to says use a lazy susan for the pivoting base, or buy bearings made for it. As far as the head goes, I would think that skateboard wheel bearings would be fine. Just make sure there is no play in the gears, otherwise you will get a jolt when you begin a camera move. Also, you have to be careful with those motors when it comes to variable speed. I would recommend experimenting with linear and log taper potentiometers to see which works better with cushioning the start of a movement.
I wouldn't recommend using radio controls, but rather wired controls. There's just too much interference, and I'd hate to lose a whole shoot day because the neighbors kid wont quit driving his radio controlled boat in the bathtub! Not to mention they are tough to move extremely slow and you want to have a nice range in speed control of the camera.
I've been most impressed with the triangle jib that Jimmy Jib makes. It has tilt, pan, and dutch control, and can extend to 40ft. Check it out here (http://www.jimmyjib.com/triangle.html).
I have ideas for a crane that can extend electronically too. I think we should get together with some paper and pencils and figure this thing out.

I didn't hear the sound, but Matt said it turned out nicely... He's out on a shoot right now for the station... or he was!
The VFX are looking nice. The RED footage is so daunting that you can't really preview anytihng... you have to render to review, which sucks. That scene that I am working on it coming along, it still looks a bit to CG, but again, you can't tell at LOW preview RES and no animation preview.

HYPERJIB
Shane, I may be having to buy you a double double meal at In N Out as I priced all of my crane stuff; and with the building of the strong adjustable tripod base it will come out to a little over $165. Dang. I am opting for a tubular Hyperjib instead of a crane as it will be faster to throw together and easier to set up on set. I am going to use 10' 1 1/2" tubing and insert into it 10' 1 1/4" tubing. I am going to test an optional additional 6' base section too. Inner tubing will be shimmed for a tight fit and bolted in place when constructed on set. Support will be with cable suspension on three axes. Steering will be by hand with geared mechanical advantage to allow for 2 axis incremental camera movements in a smooth fashion. Monitor mount will allow 2 operators view of the shot. Overall Hyperjib movement will be by a grip. Third person (DP?) will run the camera zoom and focus electronically. Castors will be removable and dolly wheel sets will be attachable for rolling the whole Hyperjib on a dolly track. This rig should give our directors an ability to run the camera up to 22' with complete camera shot variability; including dollying the whole rig. YAY! :kali:
