okay, i tried multiple searches in the forums, i didn't find the answers i was looking for, so sorry in advance if i'm asking something that's already been covered and if there is a thread perfect for this please direct me to it.
what is a good hard case for my new hvx, i really like the looks of the official thermodyne, but i don't want to spend 350. is there anything comparable? what do you guys use? i would be interested in a diy idea.
note: i need something that is tough and if it's diy, i need it to look professional enough because i plan on renting my cam out for some extra rent money. this is my first camcorder and i've never had a case except for the soft ones for my still cams
pelican - "there is no substitute."
sailtechmarine.com has some of the lowest pricing on pelican stuff in the country. $239 for a 1650 model (case shown below)
the pic-n-pluck foam allows you to configure things anyway you want. BUT BE CAREFUL. once you pull it, its more or less in stone. the only way to go back is to either glue it back in (which never works that well) or order a new full block which is like $150 or so. plan well (measure twice and pull once as they say) and try not to leave fewer than 3 rows of foam between heavier items as the overall structure will get floppy.
here is a pic of my pelican when it was in its basic state.

If you want a case that's also FAA approved for carry on then check out the Pelican 1510 ($132) - I'm able to get the HXX, 3 batteries, Century Optics .6x WA, 2 x P2 cases, Battery Charger, VIDLED, sennheiser G2 wireless lav, a mini-mag light, and Seagate free-agent go drive in mine. It took me about 2 hours to plan and pluck how I was going to lay everything out so that it would fit. I'll try to post up some pics soon.
As for the 1650 - it can be purchased for $193 here: http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/detail_pelican_1650.html
@wzgn - You might want to check out Cases For Less - I've purchased 2 cases from them with great success and I also had a buddy who lives in San Diego physically go there to buy his case. So they are legit and the prices are better than Sailtechs.

I wouldnt go with anything less. Ok I might go with a storm case instead. I prefer the storm latches and wheels actually. Nothing wrong with the pelican though.

Be sure to check out the Storm Case line of cases as well. They are just as strong as Pelican but no where near as heavy.

I have the pelican 1610 case. More than enough room for an HVX and a few other things. I might even argue that there is enough for an HVX out fitted with a redrock m2. I paid about $180 and it is great. It did take me about 4 hours to properly fit the camera to the pick n pluck foam. The more time you take the better the fit. Oh, mine also came with an adjustable handle and wheels so you can pull it behind you walking. The case itself is about 20 lbs. so it is a little beefy. Great none the less!

+1 I have multiple storm cases and MUCH prefer their latches over the pelicans.

im2500 is the smallest I would go and it is carry on legal to fly.

pluck away with your fingers, you don't cut, it has cubes you pluck. It isn't that difficult, why I like the storm case im2500 v. the pelican 1510 is that the storm comes with three layers of foam as opposed to 2 thick layers with the pelican. this allows you to have less depth for accessories.

THe 1610 Pelican came with 3 layers as well. I think everything less than the 1600 has 2 layers. They're not deep enough for 3.

I use the Storm Case im2500 and it is great. Room for extras, too. Almost sold it as a package with my DVX.
VERY glad I kept it.

we got 3 Pelican 1560 cases @ 159 each, they fit the camera, charger, 2 batteries, 1 500gb USB hard drive and cables, 5 dv tapes, manuals, Barry Green's DVDs, tape cleaner, p2 cases (2) and still very protective...

Well, my storm case came today...it's the 2500 and it seems a tight fit. With all the cubed layers out and just the lid foam and the thin piece of bottom foam left in the camera lens hood requires a bit of pressure/foam compression to close the case. Do you have the hood removed from the camera and stowed by itself in your case?

I have the 1610 with retractable handle and wheels. The foam was precut. Its holds a lot of stuff, but heavy and cumbersome if you are not using the wheels. Definitely, not a carry on.

So a 1510 would hold a dvx100b nicely? not looking for it to hold very much else other then the camera.

I agree. I want a camera case. I have countless gear bags and cases, but the 1510 holds the camera, 3 batteries, charger, 4 cards, barry's book, and that's all I need. And it's carry on sized.
I'm getting a second HVX 200 and I'll get another 1510 for that one.
We have countless gear bags that have all the other stuff (when we need it).
I debated heavily on our second HVX to get a bigger case. But (for us), it came down to having a case for the camera and basic gear was better then a bigger case for "everything" we might need.
Of course, this is as subjective as Ford-Chevy and MAC-PC.

Im running mine in a 2720 storm.. its large.. but holds heaps and i plan on eventually putting a mattebox in there too.
When i do need smaller i think i'll pick up a backpack.

That's a great case, just know that it isn't carry-on qualified for those who want their camera topside.

Yea, When i next need to fly with the gear i think i'll pick up either a 2500 or a kata or petrol backpack. Probably a back pack.. more useful.

To see cases in use by users on the board before you buy:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=130871
cases in use by users on the boarduh Ijaba, that's ONE case from ONE user... and cramming lights randomly into a case and stuffing foam randomly in the negative space isnt really the best example for moving a camera
