View Full Version : Weird P2 import error in FCP6

So sometimes when I importing files in FCP6.0 using log and transfer, some clips fail to import. No matter how many times I retry it will not work.

HOWEVER, if I rename the clips, they will then work. Not just to any name. Sometimes I have to keep trying different names and letter/number combos. Eventually, I can always get them all in.

My card is not corrupt and this is intermittent. The footage is fine once its on. It's as if maybe it has something to do with a file naming error of conflict...??

What in the world? Why do I have to keep renaming clips to finally get them to import? For example, my last import: 137 total clips, but 9 I had to mess with until they came on, and 3 gave me a lot of trouble down at the end of renaming until it finally worked...

grrr.

Would be interesting to try to download the exact same files into another HD/P2 software, say like EDIUS or Premiere CS3, to see if it has something to do with FCP in general, your own version of FCP, or the files themselves... Wish i could help you figure this out bc i'm ought to acquire Final Cut bc working on MAC and getting more and more worried about all the kind of issues FCP users encounter. This to say that i will be expecting tips and feedback as much as you might : )

A couple of questions. . .

Do you end up with a little red exclamation mark in the status icon column? This has been an ongoing issue for many people, myself included.

Are you trying to import directly from the P2 card, or a copied P2 card image stored on the same drive as your Final Cut Project's Capture Scratch Directory? I found that if the P2 card image was stored on the same drive as my Final Cut Project's Capture Scratch Directory, then I would experience the same problem. Some clips would fail to import, bumming out with a red exclamation mark. In my case it was directly linked to which drive the data was stored on. If I copied the image to another external drive, and then tried to import those clips, there wasn't a problem. This has solved the issue for me every time.

Have you heard of the "Remove advanced pulldown" issue? Another fix that has worked for myself and some other users is to access the import settings by clicking on the little cog/gear icon at the top of the log and transfer window. By checking/unchecking the checkbox with "Remove additional frames/advanced pulldown etc" it sometimes allows you to import the problem clips. I haven't found this as successful as copying the P2 image to another drive, but it has worked on occasion.

I hope this helped, let us know how you fare. . .Good luck! :)

Yes, I get that little red exclamation mark when it fails.

This time in particular, I was importing straight off the P2 card (although I didn't set the P2 card to "read only" by physically sliding the switch, could this be part of the issue?).

However, I have also tried pulling it off a P2 folder on the same HDD as my scratch drive and encountered that problem, too...

I haven't tried importing as a folder to a seperate HDD and then importing, I'll give that a shot next time, and also the remove advanced pulldown.

What an odd problem, I still can't figure out why renaming the clip eventually solves the problem though...??

what version of quicktime/FCP do you have? I had this problem originally back around QT 7.3ish, but it's gone now that I'm on QT 7.4.1.
