View Full Version : labeling the P2 physically
I searched and didn't find anything on it so it might just be a really stupid question. But here it goes anyway...
Is it safe to label the P2 card physically - say, with a masking tape and a sharpie? I don't see why not but better safe than sorry!

gaffers tape and a sharpie. I wouldn't put the p2 card into the camera with tape on it though. Unless you get a label maker or something. But there's no reason why you couldn't label them.

Turn the card over and you'll find a big white spot for just that purpose. We used a permanent marker for each of our 4 cards.
I wouldn't suggest using masking tape either. You might be fine, but eventually tolerences "could" cause problems.

Has anyone found that a "permnent" marker like a Sharpie can be wiped off the P2 card's surface? Many similar surfaces I know of (like the channel strips on an SSL audio mixing console) can be completely cleanly erased of Sharpie markings over and over with a little isopropyl alcohol and a kleenex. I've been hesitating to mark my cards until I know if I can do that with them too.

Use a sharpie to label the white area and then put a piece of clear packing tape over the white area, trimming the tape so it has smooth edges before applying. I've been using this for quite some time and no problems with tape in he slot.

I would definitely recommend that you not place stickers on the P2 cards. A couple years back I shot race footage for a movie when the P2 was brand new and we used 10 - 8GB P2s because that's all we could find to rent. Anyhow one of the companies placed those little silver stickers with company info on the P2. The sticker pealed off as the card was being withdrawn from our laptop. The card would not come out, finally we got the card out, but the sticker wrapped itself around a piece inside the laptop. After laptop surgery, I was able to get it out. Fortunately, this did not happen on the race shoot itself as it would have been a very big problem.
I would just mark the back.
We mentioned it in this article:

They list what type of marker to use and I remember Barry had mentioned it in the past. I think it's a grease pencil or I'm sure a dry erase would work... Don't put tape on that thing at all.. just write it in the white spot. I used to have the marker and forgot the exact name. It's listed though in the P2 manual that comes with the card.. check the manual... and then let us know... not sure I still have mine so..

I use a grease pencil. Since most clapper boards use that now, it makes sense, since the job of marking the card would go to the clapper/loader.
