View Full Version : Greenscreen in After Effects

Okay, I saw a cool tutorial about simulating an exterior shot of a vehicle using greenscreen and some cool After Effects stuff (Andrew Kramer's Serious Effects & Compositing DVD, if you're interested) . Of course I had to try it...so I grabbed my camera and forced two of my children into the garage. I have a really green piece of fabric that I used to covered the car windows, and took a few shots.

Since I was primarily interested in getting some footage into my editor and working on the keying techniques, my footage really suffers from poor light, wrinkles in the greenscreen, awful focus, and the general crummy quality you get when you try to rush through something. But, it's amazing how close you can get to making it look "real". Imagine if you really took the time to set it up properly!

Here's the link. It takes a minute to load (just shows the QT logo for a minute or two...not sure why):

Here's two side by side grabs (Before & After).

UPDATE: Sorry, I thought I was in "Screen Grabs / Footage" when I posted this...shoulda been.

Yeah... We do this all the time in FCP... sometimes using Primatte and other keyers. The process is getting better all the time, but still a voodoo art. Some of the best GreenScreen work on broadcast TV is the series "24" if you want to see how those guys use various lighting techniques and patterns to make you think Jack is really driving the street of LA at night. There must be 10 or 15 guys moving lights across the scene to simulate street lights, etc.

On the "Batman Begins" Extras DVD is a pretty cool explanation how the lighting of moving vehicles work. Easier than you think it is...

Yeah, not sure what's going on there. A lot of the video I have up there is much bigger than this one. I think I exported it the same way I've done all the others. I'll try reloading the clip and see what happens.

David,

Actually all I did was have my wife pick up some green fabric at a sewing store. Draped it over the car windows opposite of where I was shooting. Here's a pic from my cell that I happened to take that afternoon.
