Hi,

I have an HVX, and I am using it with the m2 adapter, so I got rod support.
I wonna buy a LCD monitor which I could attach via magic arm flipped to the setup.
I wonna use it for focus so it would be great to have 720p resolution on it.

What LCD would you recomand?
Budget arround 800 dollars.

Thank you.
Oli

Short answer is that for $800 you won't get 720p. Heck, triple that amount and you still won't get 720p. For the budget, Totevision and Ikans are two brands to search for.

I can Imagen, but there are always new lcds coming out, older are getting cheaper, and so forth the market changes all the time.
So I think in this case putting the question again, should be ok.

Okay lets raise the budget,
what can I get for 1700 dollars?

I would be able to get the RED LCD (http://www.red.com/store/product_detail/38)
with magic arm.
But I don t know if I find a plug to make it work with the HVX?
I also think that the red makes strange layers in different lighting situations. But I would be able to live with that.

SO would the red lcd work on the hvx?
Has someone good alternatives in that new price range?

Thank you
Oli

There is a $800 solution from IKAN. It got a good review from DV magazin, read it here (http://www.dv.com/reviews/reviews_item.php?articleId=196603356).

The Ikan is decent for the price. I've used it several times before, but the build quality (plastic) isn't the best and the lack of option and color accuracy is annoying. If you can swing the cash there are MUCH better solutions out there. Like this one

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/494382-REG/Panasonic_BT_LH80W_BT_LH80W_7_9_Multi_Format_Color .html

This is THE monitor to get if you can afford it. The next best thing would be the Carrion monitor (check the Hardware section, there's a link) for about $1500.

There's no way to power the RED LCD on an HVX.

That panny looks sweet for the money... things are getting more affordable and better. I have used the Marshall and I hate that monitor. So overpriced but it is built solid but so impractical at time... The Ikan is cheaply built too.. My buddy had to send back two before the third one was the working one

I love the Totevision 703HD, it works great for focusing with my HVX and Brevis and it cost me under $700 to get it set up and running on the DVXUser batteries.

You can see a full review I wrote for it at: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=119561&highlight=totevision

Here is the website for the Carrion:

http://www.lsdsgn.com/

I am looking at the TCHD-01a model. However, I do have a question that I hope doesn't come off sounding really stupid.

Put aside the need for a camera mounted, battery powered LCD - is there any reason I couldn't or shouldn't use a 20" Vizio HD LCD (as found at Costco.) This monitor is going for $349.

This would be a temporary solution as I thought I would have more money for my 35mm Adapter, Lenses, and new Tower. Sadly I need to cut back a few things. :(

Thanks,

Ho...

How would you plan on connecting it to your camera? Might as well get a laptop and OnLocation from Adobe.

BTW, I'm waiting on delivery of a Carrion A model. Ordered it with the Panasonic battery holder. Have used the OnLocation solution and works great to a point. Being tethered isn't always the easiest way to work, but having the scopes and tools is really helpful once you learn to use them.

Planned on using lots of duct tape. :)

At the moment I am more in the learning stage. So what I'm shooting mostly done in my house, garage, and backyard. I would run the cables from the camera to this LCD a few feet away.

The more I think about it, the more I think I just need to go ahead and get the Carrion.

"learning"? just buy the ikan and save your money. for a new shooter. the more expensive monitors will just be overkill

thanks for the tip wgzn. I had thought the Ikan was more expensive, but will check it out.

no. the ikan is THE most affordable of ALL the HD friendly monitors. there are things it doesnt do as well as others. but for anyone shy of discovery channel/hollywood (and even those) its more than FINE!

the IKAN, like the rest of the crop, has its good and bad points. but at its price tag - if you smash it, you wont be refinancing your house to replace it.

like ive said before. i have the (or one of the) first v8000hd's off the assembly line and to this day its working more or less flawlessly!

Hey guys,
Just saw this thread. Note the $2100 panasonic is only 800x480 for 1024x768 you'd have to step up to the $4890 (msrp) one.

Also Mark,
Curious as to what your thoughts on the Carrion are?

thanks,
Luis

Looks nice siniarch. Wish I could make NAB this year. Will you be running and "NAB Specials" by chance? An on camera monitor is #2 on my list of gear to buy this year.
