You guys are too funny!
Banner will come soon.
More importantly, I need opinions on the image of this 35mm adapter that I have.
I purchased this during Horrorfest but never used it. I didn't have the monitor to accurately shoot with it. I now do.
It is a homemade job by dvxuser member Edweirdo. Seems to work well but I don't know if the image quality/Bokeh is up to standard. And I don't want to shoot my film with this only to find out that the adapter brought down the quality of my film.
Whereas I really do want to shoot with an adapter, I don't think it is worth it if the image is going to suck.
So.... I am uploading a link to a 35 second clip. I would love it if anyone interested would take the time to download, watch and let me know about the image quality and Bokeh.
One thing is for sure... there is an AWFUL moire effect in FCP and in QT. However, this is not present on my actual TV set. It must be a computer thing. And if I can't shake this moire, than I will have to forego the adapter.
And yes... the incident of this moire IS what prompted the title! It is so perfect for my story! Gotta love when things like that happen!
Thanks guys. Here is the link....
LINK REMOVED!

There's definitely something funky going on there, Ted. Was that some fairly bad interlacing I was seeing, too?
Mark Johnson
02-28-2008, 02:42 PM
Yes, Ted. That footage surely is interlaced, eh? Did you intend to shoot it i-laced?

Just seeing your comments above.
You know, I am about to throw this computer on the floor.
The footage is not interlaced. At least, when I stop and go frame by frame, there is not a single frame that has upper or lower fields at all.
Now... I continue to follow the comment on Post #1 under FCP sticky by Noah stating that I must capture at 29.97
And every time that I do, I get a message stating that the imported footage does not match the sequence settings. Do I want to change the settings?
I have tried many combinations of importing and sequence settings. I continue to get that message.
This is what happened to my film "Love." I got that message over and over. I finally had to edit it as is and look what happened!
At least, I have time to figure this out this time.
Thanks for taking a look.
I will go back to FCP and see wtf is going on!
Ted Arabian
02-28-2008, 02:50 PM
Lol! Tom, That Is Perfect!!!!
Ted Arabian
02-28-2008, 03:01 PM
Okay, I just re-imported that footage and THIS time when FCP asked me if I wanted it to change the settings to make the footage and the sequence settings match, I said NO. And it looks 100 times better!
I will take down that other piece of crap and ask you guys to look at this new import.
Give me a few....
Tom Marshall
02-28-2008, 03:02 PM
Ted, it looks to me like it's a field order problem. Maybe you have even first when it should be odd first or vice-versa. I don't know...
EDIT: Ok, nevermind...
Ted Arabian
02-28-2008, 03:11 PM
You know what.... This sucks. I am really starting to hate FCP. I never had problems before I switched to 6.0
However, one thing that I am noticing.... when I go to flip the image, THAT'S when all of the artifacts show up!!!!
Does this make any sense? I have been using Video Effects, Perspective, Rotate, Rotate.
I do this, I get artifacts. I undo this and I DON'T.
Any ideas or suggestions? Is there another way to flip the image?
(totally glad that I am doing these 35mm adapter tests NOW!)

use FLOP and set it to BOTH instead of using the 180 thing in the motion tab. It's under Perspective in the Effects Tab. No rendering is needed for FLOP whereas you still need to render out the 180 flip under motion

We just bring in P2 cards so I can't really comment on your FCP workflow. There are a lot of people here working with DVX/FCP so it shouldn't be hard to get some help.
When I look at the images you posted above I wonder if you got your back focus properly set OR whether you've got funky optics. What lens are you using? I see a lot of "glass bottle" effect with very soft focus on the edges in comparison to other objects in the same focal plane. That's almost always a back focus issue or a lens issue. My suggestion is that you download a focus chart and shoot it at different distances to let us really see how your optics are performing.

Hey Will, don't worry... I only plan on shooting about 2 1/2 minutes of that!
Okay....
I have re-exported and compressed this test shot. If you have time to take a peek and let me know if this adapter produces an acceptable image, I'd appreciate it.
No need to comment on the shaky crap... I do not have this adapter supported on rails and I was focusing by hand. I would have to use a follow focus because this things shakes if I look at it cross-eyed!
Anyway....
**************** HOLD THE PHONE ***************
THIS FOOTAGE IS INTERLACED!!!! WTF?????

I am going to have to get some assistance on importing my footage into FCP before I can request your opinion.
I am very upset at this crap. I do not understand this at all.
I am shooting on F6 (scene setting) on a dvx100b and editing on FCP 6.02
IF anyone can tell me what settings I should use, please let me know.
According to Noah, I am to capture at 29.97 So, should I set my sequence settings to 29.97? I have read that for F6, I should edit on a 23.98 timeline.
Do I capture at 29.97 and edit at 23.98???
anyone know?

Edit 23.98; shoot F6.

Ted, at first glance my initial thought was that your camera (still the dvx, right?) wasn't properly focused on the macro. I know you're using your 35mm lens but be sure your camera's optical system is properly focused on the image and then let it be.
I'm probably beating a dead horse with this, but just in case... there it is! my two cents!

Thanks Kyle, I think Mark was eluding to the same thing. I will check that focus and try again. I know that Edwierdo provided me with a Manual Focus setting and a Zoom setting when I received the adapter. I can't put my hands on that paper right now. I own it but where???? (yes, my personal space looks like Mark's! LOL  )
But I will work on that focus biz before I request more feedback.
..........
Blaine, thanks! I will try this.
As I dig deep into FCP, I am finding all kinds of settings. I don't know what I should be touching and what I should leave alone.
I wish that they made a button for: dvx100B/squeeze/F6(24pA)
Oh well...
We will get this right.
Thanks guys. I will check this focus and try to capture this footage and then upload for your feedback.
But first I have to go eat dinner!

Trying this again!
I finally got this 35mm adapter footage exported correctly.
I did not re-shoot the footage using a different back focus. I will do that tomorrow.
I am requesting feedback on this clip before I shoot my Time Fest film with it.
I am concerned about the quality of the image because this is a homemade adapter and that it has a static ground glass.
The clip is 24 seconds long and 8.75 MB in size.
I would appreciate any feedback.

Ted ... TED!!!!
Don't discard that adapter yet. Through the magic of post the FatMonsterTeam has been able to rescue your footage. We'll be happy to post the filter settings we used so that others with your adapter can benefit. In fairness, I should add that Disjecta was primarily responsible for developing these settings:
www.archivisuals.com/TedFix.mov (http://www.archivisuals.com/TedFix.mov)
p.s., Disjecta also said that you may have slightly better results if you use a tripod next time.
Ted Arabian
02-28-2008, 09:54 PM
Thanks Mark. When I shoot my Monet montage, I'll use those settings!
btw... not a tripod issue, it's an adapter that is not supported by rails. Just doing tests for quality of the image. Not trying to put together a demo reel.
Okay, back to the drawing boards.....

That picture was taken IN BALTIMORE!!! It was Fenway South for the day. Totally awesome day. So many Sox fans. It is funny to just try and FIND an Oriole's fan in the pictures.
I have some pretty cool pictures from that day... including one with Millar and Lowell hanging out during a pitching change. The funny thing was that Millar was on second base and walked over to third to chat with Mike. It was a great day.

Yeah, mon. I can't get tickets to Fenway... that's why we went down to Baltimore with all of the other Red Sox fans. It was crazy. The whole drive down there was pack with cars with Red Sox stickers and such.

Ted,
Way cool update. What did you decide regarding shooting this as an ACTION film? ARe you changing the concept? From your report it appears you've nixed the notion of using a stabilizer and also will not be using a 35mm adapter. Does that mean you will shoot stock DVX100?
One of the great thing about these threads is to watch progress and developments. Having you part of this fest from the git-go is way cool. I know we all are hoping to get more updates and hopefully some images as you make decisions.
Where are you going to be shooting this and have you settled on locations?

As an actor, I always try to develop a bit of a backstory. I haven't really done it with my films. But I like this. And this story is so freakin' amazing. I am just loving the concept. I feel that it needs to be pitched!

Hey Mark, Thanks!
I am a bit torn... I really had an action concept running through my head BUT as i started to think about it, I asked myself... HOW THE HECK AM I GOING TO SHOOT THIS??? I feel that an action film has to more than static shots.
As for clarifying whether this is an ACTION film or not is yet to be determined. I will write out this story and find a section of it to focus my short on. I foresee many options here.
I am going to write a few users here and ask some questions about action technique.
Anyone willing to offer their 2 cents are more than encouraged to do so.
As for the 35mm adapter, I really wanted to use one in this film but I think that it will have to wait for another fest!
And yes.... pretty much intending on shooting this with my dvx100b

I lived in Italy for 3 years and I once though they were the craziest drivers on earth...until I moved here. People are maniacs on the roads.
Italy sounds great! Was that for school?
As for the drivers in Texas, I am so surprised! Most of my driving was highway driving but the drivers were GREAT! I loved how slower drivers would move to the side to allow you to pass. Here in the Northeast, it is not that way at all. (Actually, I have lived in CA, OR, and NC and I have NEVER had anyone allow me to pass!) It is always, "I must be ahead of you!" attitude.
Perhaps the city driving is like most places in America. We live in a very selfish society... and it really shows in how we drive.

Well, off to bed.
I am very excited with the progress I've made on THE MOIRČ EFFECT.
As it stands now, I have drafted the outline for the six minute short and have written a back story that could make a feature.
I would like to tell more about this story but I am going to hold off. I mean, it IS only March 1st!!!
I will say that this film is definitely in the genre of a Sci-Fi. But with a name like THE MOIRČ EFFECT, you probably had already figured that out!
I will find ways to give information about the story... in time!
Best to all,
-Ted

Just have to say that I have received some really great feedback thus far. I am very excited to make the suggested changes. I just love hearing the different views.
It is so funny, you get so involved in writing that you can over-look some simple things (and not so simple things!)
I have discovered that writing a Sci-Fi is pretty brutal! There is so much that I feel needs to be explained... you know, being such a fiction and all.
Really want to thank those members who are previewing this script and offering such great feedback.
I say it all the time but I'll say it again..... I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!

PRODUCTION QUERY.....
I was about to do some story-boarding and kept thinking about a few issues. Namely, Camera movement. I am very curious about the "motivated" camera move as there was quite a bit of feedback given in this department on this subject in the last fest.
I didn't go to film school and really don't know. I am sure that I am like many who just direct from what they "feel." But there are many here who direct under the general guidelines as well.
There are certain rules I completely understand... breaking the line, for instance.
I am curious if there are rules on the camera movement. Or is the feedback given on camera movement generated from opinion?
I am starting to read a book on cinematic motion. So far, I am loving the book and have been blown away by a few "seemingly" obvious comments. It is funny that directing for theatre and directing for film are TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BEASTS! I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this but it is very cool to see this in writing.
I really hope that my film reflects some of this knowledge that I am obtaining.
So, I do beg the question (because I have a feeling that it is a "personal feeling"), what motivates your camera move?
The Moiré Effect is a Sci-Fi, Action-Thriller (God, I hope!). The "action" part of it is what has me a bit nervous. Do I go hand-held or static?
I have been ordering "action films" on Netflix and evaluating. I've seen both styles used effectively.
Thoughts? Comments?
Please share them if you have them.

Ted, I would say build the steaditracker device I built for 36.00 You can see it used briefly in Stricken when the camera pulls up to the lead in the restaurant then turns 180 degrees with her as she turns. It gives you the best of both worlds. You can keep the energy up in chase scenes, and fight scenes, while doing freakin amazing moves, you could never do with a dolly! Use it and watch production value go Up Up Up!
Here it is. It has been worth it's weight in gold. My news station just had me use it to capture some promotional elements, because it was that cool, even though it looks ghetto!

Jeff.... the way I cook these, they lose A LOT of their fat (from the skin). Just check out HOW MUCH liquid (aka FAT) is in the bottom of that pan. I don't add a single drop of liquid. That is pure FAT!
But don't be misled... these are still juicy and delicious.
You don't HAVE to cook them on the grill as long as I do. I like them like this, but you can pull them off the grill after 30 minutes and they are just as good. My wife and I like them "dried out" and this is how I always serve them. But,really, you don't have to cook them this long.

Cool thanks for the tips. Just responded to the "official" wings thread too. Nice video! Good to know on the grilling times. And good to know on the fat too. Now I can eat more of them! Maybe I'll do some for 30 and some longer - I always love a good cooking experiment!

Cool man. I know that you'll like these.
IF you want... you can sprinkle Paprika on some of them before grilling (instead of Cayenne) for those who don't like too much spice.
The spice that you braise the wings in (the oven step), doesn't not add an overpowering spice to them. Most of the "hotness" comes from the cayenne that I sprinkle of before grilling.
Also, I have used Tabasco for the syrup but any cheaper brand cayenne sauce works just as well. (as you can see, I buy it by the gallon! That was Red Hot brand, btw.)
When I started this recipe creation, I used Imitation Maple syrup. Sucks. Use REAL maple syrup! (the imitation DOES NOT taste anywhere like real maple syrup AND imitation BURNS quick! Real does not.)
Enjoy!

Yeah I basted some bacon in maple syrup one day and it was not real... Within a few minutes in the oven it was toast. Ended up with brown sugar and crushed red pepper on bacon just letting it go for 15-20 in the oven on top of a basting pan (or whatever that thing is that comes with the oven with the slots and the catch pan...) That stuff was lethal. Hot and sweet and candy like and bacon all at the same time...
Good to know on the paprika. My wife isnt up for much heat, so maybe I'll do a couple of batches. I talked her into trying a wasabi-mustard potato chip the other day and I thought she was going to cry.

Ha a license plate that says Wasabi! Yeah you and I would get along great! If you ever are in Oklahoma let me know and I'll make you some of my Wasabi Guacamole. Came out of a phase where I just snuck weird ingredients into things just because the colors matched... I think the guacamole was the only good thing to come from that.

I almost submitted my recipe for Baby Back Ribs that I cooked for you. But I felt that these wings are so much more original.
Appreciate the comp. I wish I had YOU up here when I shot it. It sucks shooting by yourself because you are only wasting your own time! I have so many takes of that opening, it's disgusting! (actually, it's pretty funny. I thought of putting together a montage of just the opening!)
Anyway, it was fun to shoot.
Thanks!

Dude! That sounds awesome! I am going to have to try that!
Thanks, its just avacado, salt, pepper, and some wasabi paste mashed together with a little olive oil. It takes way more wasabi than it seems like it should. I use half of a little tube (travel toothpaste sized) per avacodo. The avacado really mellows out the bite of the wasabi.

Thanks Jeff. No, they're picking one person to come on the show and grill with him.
I'll keep you informed!
btw, I have decided that I am going to try and do one of these cooking segments a month. I have always talked about putting some of my recipes together in a video. It was pretty fun to do and I can always use the experience of cutting and such. (cutting film, not onions!)
Oh! I told my wife about your Wasabi Guacamole. She thought that sounded great.

You should definitely do more - you did a great job and seemed like a natural. Have you seen any of the Food Network's BTS stuff? They seem to air it occasionally on the weekends. They showed some great methods for some of the shows that they shoot single camera with. Basically all your wide shots with the chef narrating, then a second run with all of the closeups of the onions being cut, things going into a pan etc, no narration, but they are picking up wild foley with a boom as close to the food as the can get. The stuff cuts beautifully and gives you that nice sizzle and pop and chop. And Giada films in a real house! They just rent a new one each season for a few months and shoot non stop and move out. Prep kitchen in the garage. Its pretty fascinating stuff.
Ted Arabian
03-21-2008, 06:47 PM
That is fascinating stuff!
No, I don't watch the food network. I guess I will turn it on and check it out.
I have always wanted to shoot some kind of cooking program. I have been talking about it for a couple of years. In fact, right after I purchased my dvx.
I have a perfect kitchen, (designed and built it all by scratch!), and always felt that it would make a nice set.
I really do want to shoot some more of these episodes. I love to cook and I love presentation. I think that it would be a lot of fun.
I have mentioned this often to a few friends of mine who like to cook or bake to see if they wanted to put together a few "episodes." I always get the "yeah! That sounds great!" but we never do anything about it.
Maybe time to change that!
Thanks again, Jeff. It has been totally fun talking about this.

Ted, you have that truly prized quality of being so damn likeable on camera. It comes through in your writing and is a big reason why your threads are always popular. You're a man of the people, my man!! That easy going charm is what really comes through ... so conversational. If I were you I would definitely knock out a series of these and, in fact, I'd recut this one without the reference to Bobby and stick it in a package of maybe 6 or 8. Why not ship them off to some smaller markets and cable producers? If the rest of them would be this good you might just snag an offer.
Ted Arabian
03-21-2008, 08:06 PM
Thanks Mark! Very kind words. Appreciate that!
Yeah, I planned on recutting the opening. In fact, I meant to shoot it when I was doing the one for Bobby. But, I forgot to grab it at the time. May have something to do with the fact that I had about 30 takes for that opening! LOL! And I cut most of it due to time! Plus I shot a CU version that I was going to cut into that opening. (Didn't need it though).
So, without a director or any crew, I just wasted too much time re-shooting and re-shooting that opening and then moved on without grabbing the opening without the mention of Bobby.
I actually thought the other day that maybe I could do a bit of ADR and replace the word "Bobby." I had an idea of what I'd say to lip sync that... Don't remember it right now.
Easy enough to just re-shoot it.
And yeah... I would like to put a short collection of these together and send them around. Hell, why not!
I do have quite a few recipes that I have "created." I could do an entire series on my BBQing alone.
I tell you, it was really fun to shoot and cut together. And I really like the pace of the one that I just produced. It really flies. I think that I would try to keep them all like that.

Now that I am old, fat and respected, I think back on my younger days and how things have changed. I used to have something of a glamorous life with women crawling before me (see below).
However, now I spend most of my time picking up after Tim and driving his many women to and from the Fat Monster studios. Yes, times have changed but I still have my memories:

Dude, that's nuts! What films are showing?? Is there a festival website?? ARE YOU IN IT!? =)
Ted Arabian
03-28-2008, 04:08 AM
The fest isn't until October (16th-19th) so they films are not announced yet.
The website is http://nhfilmfestival.com/
I logged on and browsed around looking for a deadline date for entries. There wasn't one listed but then I followed a link to WITHOUT A BOX http://www.withoutabox.com/
This site is very cool!
It is a resource site for Independent Filmmakers. Information, distribution, promotion... AND it is an online submission site for hundreds of festivals!!! They have a message board (very much like this) where people discuss film festivals! I checked it out for a few minutes last night. (I felt like I was cheating on dvxuser!!! )
BUT, I did find out that the NH Film Festival is accepting films until May 5th. There is no way I could shoot anything for that and I don't know if anything I've done would be accepted. I do intend to take a look at my films... I would LOVE to submit something.
Funny... last year I said to myself, I am going to submit something to that festival. I just haven't made a film that has wowed anyone here so I don't feel that I would wow anyone at a film festival.... even if it IS only the New Hampshire Film Festival!

Thanks Jason! I was considering taking a look at that one. I do need to fix the film rate issue that I have with it but I have time to do that.
I am teaching myself Apple's Color right now and may try to do some CC experiments with it. Plus, I have a ton of simulated sex footage that is just beautiful! (and erotic!)
I really wanted to get that additional footage in the final cut but I am torn as I love the opening shot the way it is. I will have to play with this and put it in the user film thread for feedback and such.
Great. Thanks! I appreciate the response.

Well, I have been acquiring some lenses on ebay for my Ed35 and I am very excited by my recent purchases.
I picked up a 28mm f/2, a 85mm f/1.8 and a 135mm 2.5. All Canon FD mounts and in excellent condition and great prices!!! (sure does pay to be patient)
Add the 50mm f/1.4 that I purchased a while ago and I should be all set to shoot with an adapter this go around!!! Granted, it is a static adapter and I may not have incredible bokeh, but this will be a great learning experience and a step in the right direction!
.......
I have mock trials everyday until April 8th but then it is all about TimeFest!!!

Great set of lenses Ted (a lot of options ot work with there). We are working on our own lens collection. We have a few ok ones (pillaged from my dad's old 35mm days) but they are nothing to call home about, they will work in a pinch but nothing below 2.8f so ebay might be the way to go.
