2008 March 19: Ok, so we have rewritten storry quite a lot as it was lacking important details and some aspects where not the way i wanted to be. Finally we got everything in the place and Nick is working hard to get the 3rd script version, we hope that 4th revision will be final!

Also, we did location scouting, found shooting locations, next week i will probably post a few photos, as we start our hard work on the storyboard.

2008 March 6: First draft of script received, working on details, changes2008 March 3: Daz from DazDicks.com (http://www.dazdicks.com/) confirmed as a music composer .

Blog:
I thought i would post some thoughts, this should be an interesting read for anyone who hasn't been to Lithuania, also nobody knows me or any our crew members here, so...

2008 March 12th:
So, we had our first meeting the current crew! Also we have an actress for the main role! Jeez, making movies IS fun :) we had amazing time discussing all the details about the story, script and how we're gonna work, we moved a step closer in the story and now just waiting what out script writer "Consipracy penguin" will come up with, and hopefully, 3rd revision of the script will be the last. Tomorrow i'm gona go location scouting, to see one house for main shooting place, our artist will start working on artistic stuff which we're gonna use for movie.

Here are some photos, and of course, main actress - Agne!

all current crew members except me :)
Main actress Agne, editor and just creative guy artist Ricardas, production illustrator Audrius.

2008 March 4th:

A little bit about myself. I'm working in IT sphere, to be exact coordinate and supervise Internet projects. I used to have a photography hobby, though one day i understood that it's not for me so I simply quit. After sometime I got video camera in my hands and used to shoot simple movies for my work, i had some practice and one of my friends asked me if I want to shoot some weddings, cause there isn't any normal wedding operators around which would do something nice, not just put crappy gold rings and flying birds around the frame. I got into weddings...

Well, i tried to do my best, but of course, without any knowledge, my best was not enough for me, though people liked it. I started looking for some education ragarding camera work, naturally i found hollywood camera work stuff, then i dig into digital cinema training, other videos, books yada yada yada... and watching DCT movies i got hooked up... i found out dvxuser.com forum, 35mm adapters etc etc...

How did I got into film making?

So then i started looking for some movie lovers and creators in Lithuania, who would be interested in making movies, i found one website kinomanai.lt though i wasn't really pleased with the movies i saw...

Later on I catched the drama fest movies. I was amazed by the quality! When i saw those movies, it struck me with like lightning! and from that moment i understod that i don't want to make anything worse than what i saw on dvxuser.com fest...

I started reading what do i need for this and that, and I spent a huge amount of money for various equipment - sennheiser g2 two wireless system mics, sony shotgun mic, letus extreme adapter, rails, ff, a set of lenses, sachtler tripod, lighting kit... i emptied my pockets, but I knew i'm doing this for a reason...

Then Love fest finished... i was again amazed by the movies and was just waiting for the theme and jump on to the Dvxuser.com fest! So here I am trying to produce and shoot my first ever movie!

I want to thank all the people around me here in Lithuania - director Smilte especially, who is a wonderful girl with her fire inside for filmmaking! All of us are doing this with our bare hands and all of us are newbies in filmmaking, but we believe in learning and progress which we will make by shooting every movie and learning from our mistakes and your comments.

I also want to thank our scriptwriter Nick from Penguingproductions and composer Daz from dazdicks.com for believing in us and helping out! I am pround that even with the very first our movie we have such wonderful INTERNATIONAL cooperation and support from the community!

Thank you!

How about this ripped from todays headlines:

http://www.baltictimes.com/photos/475/19154.jpgJUST A JOKE: Cameron's comments made Lithuania a laughing stock (Photo: Conservatives)

LONDON -- British politician David Cameron is usually keen to grab front-page headlines in the UK, but an off-the-cuff remark has made him an unexpected star of front pages in Lithuania as well.
The leader of the opposition Conservative Party has caused widespread outrage with comments he made in London to the Arts Council, a body responsible for providing arts subsidies.
Cameron is reported to have quipped “I hope you won't be giving grants to too many one-legged Lithuanian lesbians," referring to a common perception in the UK that Arts Council funding is more about political correctness than artistic merit.
Cameron claims he actually referred to “one-legged Lithuanian dance troupes” but either way, his joke has not gone down well in Lithuania.

Lithuanian police laugh at themselves with joke contest

AP Worldstream
06-16-2005
Dateline: VILNIUS, Lithuania
If a Lithuanian police officer pulls you over for speeding but refuses to be bribed, smile, you're on candid camera.

Showing a funny side few ordinary citizens get to see, Vilnius police named this joke on Thursday the "most true" joke submitted in a contest to find the best, rudest, most original and most true anecdotes about police.

Winning entries were picked by a jury of police and Lithuanian celebrities from 375 ...

(11-29) 04:00 PST Panevezys, Lithuania -- The way Laurinas Sheshkus tells it, the creative types at LNK TV were searching last summer for a gimmick to rise above the airwaves clutter of Lithuanian television when someone proposed staging a beauty contest in the women's prison in this stolid town.
"It was, like, a joke," said Sheshkus, LNK's creative director. Worse still,
it was a joke that had the potential to exploit some of the country's least fortunate young women for the sake of a few ratings points.
In short, it was perfect television. And last week, the Miss Captivity Pageant became the runaway hit of the Lithuanian broadcast season. Two of every 3 television viewers sat glued to their sofas as a raven-haired 21-year- old named Kristina won a tiara that, one can be sure, not every beauty queen covets.

Isn't this great? We get to learn about other cultures!

The vilest Lithuanian curses are called profanities. They convey the direst things to another: a shameful death, eternal suffering, terrible calamities. For example: "May nine demons take you!", "May you hang yourself from a dead branch!", "May your tongue not fit in your mouth!", "May the spring's first thunder kill you!"

Some examples of Lithuanian curses:
Po simts geguciu! O tu rupuzgalvi! O tu zalty prakeiktas! Tu avigalvi! Tu parve koja uzpakaline! Tu suns kumpi! Kapladanti! Lisk tu vabalo blauzdon! Eik i pekla, molto minti! Eik sunu, sukuot! Kaip tave sventa zeme nesioja! Suk tave devynios! Kad tave perkunas be zaibo trenktu

We'll have to get Riuka to translate!!!

James Bond walks into a bar. He sits down and orders a vodka martini shaken not stirred. A few moments later a beautiful brunette sits next to him. She notices his watch.

"That's a nice watch you have there."

"This watch can tell me anything about any person"

"What does it say about me?"

"It says you're not wearing any panties."

"No. That's wrong."

Bond looks at his watch "Damn thing's an hour fast."

A young reporter went to a retirement home to interview an aged but legendary explorer. The reporter asked the old man to tell him the most frightening experience he had ever had.
The old explorer said, "Once I was hunting Bengal tigers in the jungles of India. I was on a narrow path and my faithful native gunbearer was behind me. Suddenly the largest tiger I have ever seen leaped onto the path in front of us. I turned to get my weapon only to find the native had fled. The tiger leapt toward me with a mighty ROARRRR! I soiled myself."

The reporter said, "Under those circumstances anyone would have done the same."

The old explorer said, "No, not then - just now when I went ''''ROARRRR!''''"

One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:

Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first.

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

This is what I have to deal with on a daily basis:

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Iowa.

If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because it's the coldest or hottest spot in the nation, you might live in Iowa.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Iowa.

If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year, you might live in Iowa.

If someone in a store offers you assistance, & they don't work there, you might live in Iowa.

If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Iowa.

If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Iowa.

If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Iowa.

If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Iowa.

You know you are a TRUE Iowan WHEN:

1. "Vacation" means going east or west on I-80 for the weekend.

2. You measure distance in hours.

3. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

4. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.

5. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

6. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).

7. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.

9. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

10. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

11. You know all 5 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, road construction & DAMN HOT!

12. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.

13. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.

14. Down South to you means Missouri.

15. A brat is something you eat.

16. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole shed.

17. You go out to a tail gate party every Friday.

18. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors because your fire works melted.

19. You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

20. You find 0 degrees "a little chilly."

21. You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all your Iowa friends.

In all seriousness, we would TRULY love to make it over to Europe in the not too distant future. We have very close friends in England and have been making some new friends in other countries too. If we can find time (maybe in a year?) to make a trip it would be great to come by Vilnius to see you. Who knows? Maybe we can even figure out something to shoot together.

though if you plan to come, plan on doing in between may-september, cause this is the best period, other months - crappy cold weather.

i hope i can give back something to the community from which i learned a lot! reading all these forums and especially watching your movies! when i got into moviemaking just a few months ago, i first saw drama fest movies, i was amazed! i started looking "how do they make it" :) i found out, what's a 35mm adapter, wireless mics etc etc etc... cause i didn't know a thing about movie making... and it's dvxuser fest's movies, what inspired me to get on this ship and something myself!

so i really hope i can grow into somebody with both right hands, produce and shoot something worth for indie filmmaking!

I am writing the script which Tomas will adapt to his native language and then provide English subs. It should be pretty intense!

I produced the first draft for him, but we had some different ideas as to the flow of the script (i.e. I saw it as more of a narrative piece with lots of v/o and flash back, and he was looking for more of a visual piece with no v/o and little flash back) But now that we have that worked out, I'll be churnning up a second draft within a few days and we can continue on this track.

Overall it is looking to be a great film, and I can't wait to see the others. Also, a small personal update: I am probably going to enter a film of my own, teaming up with some friends of mine. Plus, I am in talks with another filmmaker about possibly writing his script as well. I am looking forward to this fest!

Yeah, some really cool shots. And that is a really cool umbrella light.

I am a bit envious of your light kit. Are those all yours???

thanks Guys!

no, the lights were rented, can't afford having 4k HMI's :D , so all the lighting was from our local company Cinevera. Unfortunately, this scene
made with umbrellas has been removed from the movie, as we couldn't fit into 6 minutes... so i guess i will release the scene today
or tomorrow for everyone :)

Edit is going great, we already sent a copy to Daz Dicks and Herman Witkam for music and sound design, we're getting closer to the final version of the movie.
Can't wait to see your entries!

Looked good though!

Hey Tomas, I notice that you list two composers for your film. What was the reasoning for having two people score this?

Herman will work more on sound design, Daz more on music... they simply thought they can collaborate on this, I didn't mind :)

I have screened the rough edit, and it is really well done. It is great for me to see my script turned into film, everyone did a great job! The deleted scene was also very good, Tomas, but I understand why it was cut after seeing the full version, it doesn't need it. Good luck everyone!

Hey Tomas, I notice that you list two composers for your film. What was the reasoning for having two people score this?

I PM'd Tomas, and Tomas already had Daniel (Daz) on board, and after talking with Daniel we decided we wanted to collaborate.

In the current cue list, we have 4 cues of music that need to be written. We have divided the work into 2, and once we receive each others' demos, we will give each other feedback and add compositional and productional touches (sometimes referred to as 'overproducing'), before sending a draft to Tomas.

well done Tomas. great job, especially for your first film. I thought it looked technically strong. You really have some nice lighting and composition in your shots. Couple of jerky cuts that didn't match (early in bed and between the sisters at the party) but that is to be expected unless you shoot a ton of coverage.

I really like the shot of the guy in the red cloak walking around as the others were frozen. Well done.

I think the ramifications of her choice to control time could have been explained a little better at the end. Is she now forced to live the same day over and over?

All and all, a great effort and you should be very proud of your first film. I look forward to seeing more from you.

I don't know if I ever told you after you sent me the final cut earlier in the week, but I was very happy with it. It was hard to tell that this was your first film because you did so well with the lighting and shots, etc...

As far as the questions about the ending, I will let Tomas clarify that later, I just wanted to say one of the reasons is because of the time limit, it is hard to get a lot of explaination in.

Good luck!

I liked the cinematic look to this film. I liked the camera work. The shots were well crafted and the shot selection was nice. The opening shot was interesting and caught my attention and pulled me in. The audio was done well and I liked the music selection.

I really thought your lead Actress performed outstanding. Very believable. I could tell that the direction and the little touches like stroking the mirror were effective.

The story worked OK for me, but ritual and the guy with the red cape was just a bit over the top for me.

Overall, this was really well done! Thanks for showing!

I don't think Tomas would mind if I gave it to you. He had the loose story idea and we went through several gruelling drafts until he finally decided the plot line he wanted and gave me an outline to go off of. Some portions of the script were left blank because Tomas wanted to work on them after himself (I am pretty sure it was just VICIS'S monologue, actually). I'll see what I can do...

Very well done, everything from cinematography to audio to music. Acting was strong, and didn't distract from the piece. This is great, especially if it is your first film.

Only thing working against it -- I'm not going to lie, I don't understand the twist at the end in the slightest, even after rewatching it. In the future I'd suggest borrowing a few friends who know nothing about the film and showing it to them, then getting their feedback as to whether or not it made sense. It's hard to see things with a fresh set of eyes when you know every detail of the plot.

SPOILERS!!

Hey Guys,
i saw the problem with the story once we started editing the movie, because
simply it was too long. Once we cut out 2.5 mins of movie, it was really
hard to explain evertyhing in 6 minutes, furthermore, now i understood that
such a story can be told in 10-15 mins, but not 6.

now the story is like this: Caroline is a model, she gets the call from a model
casting with a negative answer on some project, because clients chose younger
model, that's why she gets into depression and get nervous - she's getting
old and because of that she looses her work, she doesn't have a family,
all she cares is beauty and her work, thus that's why she get nervous about
the refusal.

Her sister comes, she's way younger and she knows what caroline is talking
about thus she organizes for caroline ritual, by which time spirit VICIS should
give caroline power to stay young forever and control time, though there is
one thing to know, that of course, there is a price to pay, it's death - though
whether it's physical, moral, pscychological, it's up to you to think about that...
think if you had to live all the time at the age of 20, you wouldn't experience
lots of things, what's happening let's say at 30-40, become mother, grandma
etc... in order to get something, you have to give...

Vicis appear and he says that... caroline falls down and finally wakes up from
the dream and gets the same call.... but now she understands that's her
life is not really all about beauty and she refuses to answer , understanding
that it's time to do some changes with her life...

I agree. I thought the production values were right on in this one. The light in her bedroom was particularly impressive.

And the actors were very very good, small and subtle and simple performances.

Will there be a longer version? I'm not exactly sure I got what happend at the end.

Just read your explanation.

I feel like you might have bought a little more time for clarity by shortening the first phone call and the scene with the sister. They did not drag or anything, but I can see where you might have stolen a good 30 seconds out of those scenes.

Hey Guys,

thank your for you comments, i appreaciate that!
we live and learn don't we? :) shooting this movie I learned ALOT, and this
is so far the best experience i had in my short movie maker's carrer. Despite
the fact that i watched lots of video materials, read a lot of books, some
things you just have to experience on the stage, so that happened with Vicis.

Furthermore, my intention with the movie pretty much was more to see
all the movie making kitchen, how it works, what are the difficulties etc, and
I am really happy that i reached this goal. now knowing all my mistakes i did
with VICIS, hopefully i can make my next movie way better , especially working
more on the script, story, clarifying it, evaluating time, showing only what's
important and what's not... a number of things...

I want to thank all of you once again, as without dvxuser.com forums there
wouldn't be me as a movie creator! It all started here...

Beautiful film! Very good performances as well!

As has been said by others, I didn't quite get the story. Your explanation helps, but as you know, if it's not in the film, it's not in the film. If you had the material, but not the time to show it, there was a lot of things you could have edited tighter, then you could have put back in some of the story.

My one other complaint, when the friend hands the main character the scroll, I'd like to see a close-up of it right off the bat. My sick mind thought that perhaps it was another object a single woman might want.

As I said, amazing cinematography! Looking forward to your next one.

I have to say I had a really hard time following this story. I don’t know if its because of the subtitles, but I just didn’t understand what happened. Another film I’ll have to watch again.

I wouldn't actually know the answer to this as I was just the one who wrote it. I do know of at least one scene that was shot but not used, but there were certain things that I had written that were taken out due to time constraints that I thought made the story a little harder to follow. That being said, Tomas did a great job considering this was his first film. The shots were nice and the main actress was fantastic.

I've only viewed a few films so far, and I'm glad to say that this is the best yet. While there are several areas for improvement (i.e. some of the transitions could have been tightened/improved visually and audibly), and the story explained just a touch more at the end (I was lost on why the phone call about the casting was such a big deal for a closer), perhaps taking some fat away from the beginning or middle to allow more room for the ending.

The music and audio overall was quite good, and I really dug the performances of the female leads. Nice work.

Also, cool concept overall with some nice camera work as well!

Thanks for making this and entering!

Hi Tomas

I think you did an excellent job on this film. Yes, the payoff could have been boosted rather, but the rest of it was great. The cinematography in particular was beautiful - I really liked the bedroom scene and the birthday party. Many people have rightly commented on your leading actress, but I also thought the younger sister looked great and did a very good job too. I think most criticisms have already been made. Just to add one detail that maybe others haven't mentioned: I think you could have made your subtitles a little smaller and less obvious - they would still have been readable.

Hey,

Just rewatched the flick. I enjoyed it for the most part. The production value is outstanding: the lighting is excellent, the camera work varied and rich. I really liked the theme you were going for here and thought that little Dr. Faustus-esque agreement is quite good. For a first film (hell, even if it was up to your fifth or sixth film), this was a tremendous effort. Congrats.

For me, I didn't buy into the story. I was with you until the last two scene and then it just got kind of boggled/jumbled. I mirror Mark's comments about being able to cut down/tighten a few things here and there, expecially at the beginning. It just feels like it takes too long to get into its groove. Like I mentioned earlier, beautifully shot but wasted story time., I think.

The VICIS character is a little too blunt for my taste. He come out, does his thing, then vanishes. I'm not a big fan of his sort of just saying the theme/idea of the piece. I think this could have been handled better.
Finally, I didn't buy your ending. I was confused after the first watch but then I read what was suppossed to happen and I don't think it comes off the way you intended. I just don't think we're given the information we need to follow you to your ending. She chooses NOT to go through with it? It seems to me that she has nothing to lose (as she expressed just a few scenes earlier). Also, I know you wanted us to understand that she was thinking about VICIS and what he said but I just didn't get that. The way it edits makes it seem to be for the benefit of the viewer, as if they would have forgotten the scene right before this. BUT, I think a shot of the lead thinking followed by the quick montage you've got in there would really clarify. If gives us the chance to connect what we're seeing with the character and not what the director/editor wants us to see.

Overall, I think this story has great potential and I think it's a killer of a first film. I also think you covered an amazing amount of ground and I am going to keep an eye out for your other pieces. Keep it up. The work already here is quite spectacular.
