There's a pic on that video of you, Jim, holding out the slate like you're flagging a NASCAR winner. Its one of my favorites as is the b&w one of you and Hudson.

My only complaint is that the damn video makes me look like I can't chug a beer. Jeeszhus!

Hahaha! Hey man, it was brilliant and your reaction to the spillage made the moment that much more memorable!!

Glad to be the ultimate BTS resource on the set. That shit was fun to capture and I'm proud to be able to show my friends how goofy (and KICKASS) my friends on the west coast are (and just how much they like to party!)

Keep the reviews (and the insightful posts) coming! When things wind down I wouldn't mind a 720p version of the film so I can show it to my buddies in pristine quality. They don't believe I worked on a film so GREAT!!! ;)

We'll show them.

Just read some of Mark's posts through this thread... he could charm the pants off of any woman, or back on again if the situation calls for it.

With surprising frequency I have had to employ this latter oft overlooked technique:

See, e.g.: "Um, I think your husband just got home ... "

Kyle, I dunna wanna shoot no mo widdout you also. I hope that years and years from now you get newbies sending PMs that say "how did you get your name 'Wrangler of Smokage?'"

Truly, you have become a great hope among your people. I felt little nuggets of tears forming under my eyelids when I saw you bearing the shaved-head-of-coming-of-age that marks the young warriors of your tribe. Perhaps Bullis said it best when he proclaimed: "Nebraska keeps its promises; Stebbs keeps his mouth full ... but the snake river wasn't named after a damn cow." ...

"Nebraska keeps its promises; Stebbs keeps his mouth full ... but the snake river wasn't named after a damn cow." ...

Bullis has an uncanny ability to grasp the ungraspable, illustrate the illusive, and verbalize the... well, the unspeakable. He's the man. And so are you...

Great stuff, guys. Can't wait to see you all again. Y'all be nice to Nate, ya hear?

After watching all the shorts again to make my voting I stumbeld over on thing in O2.

We are in a high tech space craft with Tachyon Warp Pulsar Boosters and it´s own gravity field, but what the hell do they have for video recording? Used VHS Tapes?

Any cheap cell phone delivers better quality that this on board video module.

Seems somehow a custom of the trade in most scifi flicks since Flash Gorden and Buck Rogers.

Never mind, I´m still in love with your film :love4:

This is prevelant in pretty much all movies and shows, "video" is gonna look f*cked up. Even shows that aren't sci-fi. But for instance, I'm a big fan of Battlestar Galactica, the episode where Lucy Lawless's character is introduced has footage that has to be established as "video" and they threw all kinds of static on it like it was a news spot from 1982. I agree, you'd think in the future they'd have, you know, upgraded their chipset?

That made me laugh this morning Frank. Yes their company is comprised of really cheap bastards. Did you notice that the music at the beginning was being played on an 8-track tape cartridge? :)

Mark, et al.

I have been pondering your use of other members from DVXUser to help on your films. The core group I tend to work with are all pretty solid guys. However, on occassion when we have added people into the production effort either one of two things happens:

1) They end up having a very poor work ethic/attitude/etc.

2) We are so busy on set it is hard to know how to utilize them (especially if we have not met them before).

When you guys have people come out to help on your shoots how do you organize/utilize them? Also, have you ever had a problem with anyone you've brought on to the crew and if so, how did you handle it?

The problem has been getting so busy (and perhaps poorly organized) that we don't get them integrated well. Also, if they have very little experience putting them in a "key" position could compromise the quality of the production.

Obviously, not paying people hard cash makes it a little more difficult to be picky! :)

Do you guys have any thoughts/insight on this?

Thanks!

Daniel

Looks like an intro to an episode of FIREFLY or something.

Truth is, a lot of times a big effort like this is a big risk in that you really don't know who you're getting. We were VERY fortunate in that everyone that showed up was worth their weight in gold. I've had situations before where people show up and really don't know what the heck is going on or have bad attitudes, etc. But a lot of times you can get lucky.

I think the deciding factor is how they're treated and what project it is. If you're working out in the middle of the desert in 110 degree heat, 12 hour days with little shade, people are obviously going to drag ass regardless. But if you're project is cool and people are into it, people work harder and have better attitudes. It seems like the best way to get people united is to treat them well, make sure they know they're appreciated and have a cool project that they can say "hell yea, I helped make that happen!"

If they are indifferent to the project, then it will show. But I see how you mentioned that sometimes you are so busy on set you don't know how to utilize people. First off, I totally understand what you're saying and have done that many, many times. Unfortunately I think that is the start of having someone who is not able to contribute to the best of their ability. I've been on a few sets where the situation is exactly that - I'm standing around while the "core" group of film makers are doing all the work and I feel like I'm getting in the way. At that point I feel awkward and usually am lost to some degree as far as my ability to contribute.

We assigned people to certain departments. Gave people very specific jobs. "Hey, Hudson, you're the first A.D., here is what we're trying to complete today, make sure we do!!!" This seemed to work really well. We were actually nervous about having so many strangers, but I can honestly say it wouldn't have went nearly as well if these people hadn't shown up.

BTW: TSM was great man. awesome job.

The set was used in Episode 3 (Bushwhacked) as the abandoned ship. Here's some frames from the episode that I pulled and posted on our preproduction web site when we were discussing the lighting approach we would be using:

I am very impressed - This is a very entertaining film, and great production values! I love the look of it as well.

Justin's score is very functional and subtle in the background when it needs to be, and works really well when brought to the front at the dramatic and suspenseful moments! My compliments to Brad too for the sound design/mix!
I would love to hear this in 5.1 :)

I too had a nitpick with the video. Evan (not his real name, just the one I have assigned to him for now) has his arm up in the first fram to indicate he is starting the recording, but at the end he never puts his arm up to stop the recording. It just stops itself. Also, after Zoey (again with the name thing) is revived, there is no bandage or mark to indicate a needle had been in her throat.

I never whined about these because the film was fucking kick ass shit, but I decided "what the hell, might as well give 'em a bad time!"

Mark and crew. I went out on a shoot yesterday and was thinking about your piece on the way. Just wanted to say how glad I was you did this short, it really inspired me to lift my game. There are no quick corners for me anymore. Now yesterday was helping on someone elses short because I can get reciprocal assistance in the future, I ended up doing grip and all the sound. But I made what I did perfect - the sound was the best stuff I had ever done in narrative. (I dont want to do sound - but just a point). Seriously, it was just right on the money. Not gloating about that, I just wanted to point out that you guys have influenced me to push it to the next level. Which is great in more ways than one - this is my day job.

A+ Noel. That's what I'm sayin'. Tryin' really hard right now to put aside the gear obsession and actually shoot something myself. These guys make you want to get to it.

I too had a nitpick with the video. Sam has his arm up in the first frame to indicate he is starting the recording, but at the end he never puts his arm up to stop the recording. It just stops itself.

When Sam and Natalia recorded the message they truncated it when they saved it as a loop for Trevor to find. On the full recording Sam fondles Natalia's breasts and flips Trevor the bird. They decided it would be in poor taste so they clipped the recording at the point it stops and automatically rewinds to the beginning.

Also, after Zoey (again with the name thing) is revived, there is no bandage or mark to indicate a needle had been in her throat.

This is the future penguin. They used a subepidural diffuse osmotic delivery system that is primarily pneumatic. Thus, no wound. No blood. No bandage needed. In seriousness, the prop itself was given to us by Dragon Dronet and it actually is intended to be a pneumatic delivery system. We deliberately chose the old-fashioned syringe for the scene where Natalia sticks Trevor because it looks more menacing and cool.

Thanks for your observations. You may return to what you were doing now.

Okay, I'm not even sure where to begin.

The storyline sure feels complete. The ending was sure a twist, didn't expect the both of them to sacrifice their life for him. As soon as she tells Trevor they'll never hurt him, it was a 70/30 deciding factor that he will live and they die. The emotions were outstanding. Roles were performed very well, the timings and edits added an immense amount of drama to their reactions. Facial makeups looked neutral and the right type of clothing for the call of scenes. You guys focused so much detail into the production that every itty-bitty thing in there looked natural.

The only unnatural element that stood out was the amount of light reflection off from her spacesuit during the repair stage.

The cinematography looked gorgeous. Has this cold temperature all around, yet enough lighting to fill the face and the surroundings. This may just be my way of looking things, but I believe the setting in the mechanical repair room should have looked warmer (more dark orange, meaning critical or high-alert area).

Music, this is what I call film scoring! Wonderfully written, to what the scenario calls for, reactions and mood of the dialog. Also, there was always an underscore present whenever a scene feels empty.

The production sound, superb! Not too upfront during medium/wide shots and not too distant during closeups. Just the right headroom in every shot.

This one is for you Brad.
The sound design also came out evenly well. The buildup of the meteorite passby until it just barely whips across your right shoulder was solid. Just the right tension of an enormous beast. Trevor tuned out to the music is so reality. When Trevor tossed the package to Sam, the whoosh effect sounded too thick to be plastic. I love what you did during the repair sequence. The droning sound effect and the system meltdown, two thumbs up. I believe the "critical depletion" beep should be present even before Trevor steps into the control room and after he leaves. I also liked how you added distance to the incoming voice transmission when the framing gets wider.

Overall, Amazing! Fat Monster quality everywhere.

Wow!! Bam, bam, bam, you guys really hammered this.

I will just allow myself one little observation (i.e. not a criticism, but maybe a back-handed compliment). I liked this the first time round, I liked it MUCH more the second. I think that this level of production quality is such a deluge in the format of a six minute short that it's easy to miss the story somewhat on the first viewing. I mean the story is not difficult to follow at all and it was a good story with a great twist at the end while the acting was excellent. I just think I was overwhelmed a little and the six minutes were over before I really had a chance to adjust. That, of course, is not a reason to not go after this level of quality. I think you've taken it to a whole new level in DVXuser fests and maybe in the world of 6 minute shorts in general.
Congratulations.

Mark Johnson
06-24-2008, 11:07 AM

Production values are astounding, such that I don't even feel the need to comment on them. You guys have already heard it enough.

I'll offer what criticisms I can. I feel like there should have been more tension built up to when she stabs him with the syringe. He doesn't seem fearful enough. My guess is that this was probably limited due to time constraints. Also, I'm not sure what the purpose of the intro scene with the meteor is, unless it's what caused the oxygen leak and I missed that, or if it's just to establish they're in space.

The twist was cool and unexpected. I suspect this would have been much better suited for a 10 or 15 minute short -- I haven't read this massive thread, so I'm not sure if that's been discussed. Side note regarding the crew of three -- man, there must have been some constant awkward third-wheeling going on, haha.

All-in-all, very well done, but you really don't need me to tell you guys that to know it. Cheers, and looking forward to future productions.

Mark Johnson
06-24-2008, 01:17 PM
Hey thanks Duff!!!! Indeed, the meteor took out the oxygen tanks/fuel cells. The exterior shot of the ship shows that damage but we didn't feel it necessary to be explicit about that in the story itself.

Thanks so much for the compliments, man. We really appreciate it.

Finally started getting to watch these, took forever just to figure out where I was going to watch them, I just burned out another system board on my laptop, so I have been watching them on my PSP, hah. Awesome job here man the set looked amazing but I shouldn't expect any less for knowing what the set was, good twist especially in the end, great cinematography, really liked the video screen, that was a nice touch, was that a video overlay on a green matte? Well it looked good either way, great job, and thanks for the guest apperance in The Dustin Rogan Project, Really added to it, Hah fun stuff, look forward to seeing more from you

Last night I was shooting a gig in STL and I didn't even realize I knew one of the original set designers! He lives just down the road from me... I was shooting a gig with his Varicam and I brought my macbook specifically to show him some of the TimeFest entries... and during O2 he says "Hey that's my set!" I thought he was full of sh*t but check your email FM. How ironic is that? 2 STL guys there from the ground up... STL Represent!

The guy with the arrow at his head is Wyatt Weed... he's got a company here in STL called Pirate Pictures. He's a cool dude... I think the FM crew would like him.

The set was built for a sereies called Star Runners... it was a relatively low budget production with an expectation higher then Dr. Who and Red Dwarf... but not by a whole lot. Star Runners was going to be aimed at a younger audience and I think the concept is actually pretty cool. The idea was that some period of time had passed and animals were walking upright and speaking... and intermixed with humans... and the ship had a crew of humans and upright animals... the original production sketches had these really cool wolves with the legs bent back (like a wolf's legs) and bristley hair... and some of the staff thought that the coolest characters would be too scary for kids, so they ended up taking it in another direction... unfortunately, as is often the case in productions that want to maintain kid-appeal... they freakin' Jar-Jar Binked it... or should I say they Twiggied it up... and ruined it... so the project never really got going... I think they did a few episodes that you'd be hard pressed to find.

Wyatt said that they went to these electronic junk yards... where they'd buy stuff by the pound... and they'd get pallets of the same broken item (like you'd see at a computer junk store)... and they also got plastic seconds from a place near there... the stuff that was just going to be melted down and re-used... (didn't you wonder why they had so many tripod cases in there guys? I did... those hard cases are $200+ each! but not SECONDS that were scheduled for chop and melt)... so then each guy was assigned jobs... and they created piles of the same parts... like piles of circuit boards and stacks of plastic cases... then they added up all the parts... "We have 25 of these... and 50 of these..." and then they sketched out the internal layout based on the shapes and quantity of each. He said the set used to have a sunken walkway... that there was another layer of grid that went up about 1' or so on each side... and the actors could step down through the center and back up... plus they originally rigged some things outside of the tunnels to create breaking/sweeping/moving light shafts. Pretty cool huh?

The guy that painted all of that did set painting for some other pretty incredible stuff... like the upside down titanic model? That's orange stucko! Wyatt knows that guy but I can't remember his name... I just remember the stucko and orange cheese curls were used for barnacle crap...

Wyatt has had a lot of involvement in visual design... if you check his IMDB you'll see he's done some pretty good gigs.

Hey Matt,

I'm so fascinated by this kind of stuff. I did some quick googling and found this stuff:

First I found a listing for Michael Reeves whose resume includes this note: - Pilot script for Star Runners, sold to Fallen Artists Productions, 1988. Is this the same show???

Second, I found an actress listing for Patricia Tallman that includes this credit: Star Runners, USA Network; I wonder if this is the same show?

Then, I found the Wyatt Weed channel on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/wyattweed His bio does include this: "He also directed STAR RUNNERS, a science fiction television pilot. The pilot was purchased by Universal but unfortunately was never aired."

I'm still looking for a clip from the STAR RUNNERS pilot. If anyone else can find it FAT MONSTER will buy you a Dustin Rogan T-Shirt!

Yes that's it... he told me about the Universal purchase I didn't think he directed the show... but maybe he did... he just laughed and said some guy forced these stupid puppy puppets into an otherwise good concept. We were having this conversation after 11p last night... but I'm sure we'll be getting together for a beer real soon now... I want to hear these stories as bad as you do... I was laughing my ass off last night as he told the BTS stories... but I can't repeat them here... but you'd love them to I guarantee it. I'm tempted to hook up a drink 'n dial conference call...

Yeah Mark he mentioned Patricia Tallman... one of the first things he started off with...

Notice that they all have the same cordless electric drill... that was standard equipment on the construction of the set... and Wyatt said it was common practice to kype somebody else's spare battery... so he got a few of these japanese batteries that nobody could take w/o getting caught... anyway... some guys screwed stuff together... some screwed stuff up on walls... some screwed the... *ahem*... oh and some cut plastic molds in half and stacked 'em up... they covered the floor with organized piles of inventory and Wyatt started drawing stuff up for the walls.

Yeah... it is funny to think that a lot of thought went into that place! I zoomed in on a shot of the back door... and asked Wyatt... "so who was in charge of the hamburger boxes?"... and he was pissed (not really) that so many of them have been broken off since he was there. :cheesy:

Whoa, that set was for a show that was canned two decades ago?? Why is still there? I thought I read that this was a set for Firefly? Or is it both and some studio has enough space to keep around a set 'just in case its needed'?

It was used in an ep f firefly. A couple pages back, Mark details it. And prob 100 other movies too.

Jack Daniel Stanley
06-25-2008, 01:16 PM
Yeah it's in a rental space.
http://www.lcstages.com/

Many shows / films use it - show up and modify it, leave some of their modifications. The studio allows them to leave the modifications if they want because they are usually improvements - added detail that wasn't there before and who knows if the next shoot will really need that new added element or not.

For example. When 02 shot there the bedroom suicide scene was an empty gray room. The on set art director fashioned the interior from garbage and extra pieces laying around the outside edges of the set and unused costume elements. The video monitor was ripped from the Medical Bay walls, a light was put inside and crystal buttons on the outside then mounted on the wall in the bedroom.

So it's kind of like a piece of living coral, growing and morphing with each production. I think they left the bed they made and most of the art direction up in the bedroom, but returned the video monitor back to the medical bay.

It is just one of the many standing sets in the L.A. area. You want a "tramp freighter" check out Laurel Canyon Stages, a 747 you can find one. United Pacific Studios has all kinds of standing sets. A quick trip to LA411 will find just about anything you need to make a movie.

Wow! It gets more crazy by the minute... I'm talking to Wyatt right now... and he says "so you said the guy that DP'd that was named Levy? Matty: That is too friggin' wild!!!! You know, the more we work here the more we really and truly feel like Hollywood is actually a pretty small town. That kind of proves it.

I love Jack's "living coral" metaphor as he is right about the studio letting the set "morph" as different people use it and add stuff. When we went in to shoot the opening scene as a pickup on Saturday June 14th there had been two shows shooting in there. One was a children's show of some sort and the other was a b-movie involving vampires in space or something. I was amused to see some of the tracking markers we had put up on one wall had been incorporated into some sort of design using some tape and a circuit board and apparently became part of the set design from one of those productions.

The spaceship set has been used in a bunch of music videos (three that I've seen myself) and a whole bunch of films and television shows. Its pretty cool how different it looks depending upon the set design and lighting.

Yes... "Levie"... but seriously dude... that's your response? To correct the proper spelling? Thanks for that... but where's the "Holy Coincidences Batman!"

Are you not just a little freaked out by the thread of connectivity here?

Jeez... had I known ANY of this before hand I could have had some fun conversation with Wyatt prior to even coming out... and I would have had the ultimate ice-breaker with Levie!

I REALLY liked Levie... so it would have been cool to establish a repoire with him early on... and I'll bet that would have done it.

After all... Levie was on of the few people to appreciate my favorite on-set joke... which virtually nobody else responded to... the guys were calling for Tom to waft... "WAFT! WAFT!" and Tom would spread the fog so that we could try to approximate the effect of a hazer (with extra density and layers of lighting)... and after a while I got tickled at the whole relationship of the yelling WAFT! and Tom (and sometimes Kyle's) instant reactions... so finally I said "did you know that Tom was part of the original Luft-waff-ah?"... and NOBODY laughed... but Levie turned around and looked at me like I was half-nuts... BUT... the next day... when we were yelling WAFT! I heard Levie say that afterall... Tom was in the Luftwaffa...

Dude... for comedy that was a solid endorsement... it stuck.

I like Levie a lot... he GOT it. :-)

Mark... yeah... you GOTTA' hear some of the stories... I'm sure you'll be surprised at some of 'em... and yeah... I think that the overall pool of talent in the country isn't THAT deep... or else you'd see good sh*t all the time... but we don't... everybody appreciates an ambitious effort that's well executed... and that takes talent... where that talent COMES from isn't important... just that it's there when and where it's needed.

It does suck to dedicate grips to wafting, and the time it consumes. I solved this problem and tried it out on my last short, worked awesome, no wafting.

That is so funny Mark, same with me. I'll find myself watching normal TV shows and mentally singing that music while I watch. If something tense happens, the music stops, then just as things return to normal, the song kicks in again. lol.

I will side with you on that! For some reason I keep waking up from nightmares involving Rogan running in circles nude and 1000 JDS's doing the "What What Prance" although they are each a split second off from each other, which creates a murderous echo effect.

HEY GUYS. ... I GOT THE REAL AIM SESSION FROM JUSTIN:

In the past few days, DVXusers Ben Sliker and Justin Kuhn sat down and chatted over AIM while simultaneously watching the same TIMEFEST films. We call them, "The AIM sessions". Here's their thoughts on "O2"

now, normally our AIM sessions happened upon FIRST viewing, but Justin and I had both seen O2 a few times before we did this one, so we had some thoughts prepared beforehand.

spesliker (5:04:22 PM): O2?
happygobo (5:04:43 PM): not that overproduced turd. Haven’t we seen it already?
spesliker (5:04:58 PM): Yeah, but somehow these AIM sessions have become ‘chic’ so we
spesliker (5:04:59 PM): gotta put one together to ride the hype stream these a-holes have
spesliker (5:05:00 PM): been building.
spesliker (5:05:02 PM): Ok. 3 2 1 …
spesliker (5:05:03 PM): go
happygobo (5:05:19 PM): JEEZ … that looks like a lump of coal … or a turd!
spesliker (5:05:21 PM): what is this lame-ass music? WTF?
spesliker (5:05:39 PM): and what’s the chick doing outside? That’s man’s work!
happygobo (5:05:43 PM): John Abbot Mitchell wouldn’t let some chick do the man’s work
spesliker (5:05:46 PM): hell no. He’d have that bitch tied up on the holo-deck fo sho
spesliker (5:05:49 PM): Hey, how come you never see people using the crapper in space?
happygobo (5:05:51 PM): Maybe those dudes who did SURVIVAL will tackle that one
spesliker (5:05:59 PM): Yeah, if The Dude will let them use this set
happygobo (5:06:02 PM): Hmmm. .. Just had a thought about taking a dump in zero gravity
spesliker (5:06:08 PM): yeah, a new meaning to the term ‘floater’
spesliker (5:06:10 PM): Hey, did I just see “Mark Harris Sucks” on the wall there?
happygobo (5:06:10 PM): Or maybe it said, “RPDM is DOA” ha ha. Oh those wacky monsters!
spesliker (5:06:36 PM): I wish we had the guts these guys do. Pissing off Mark Harris like this.
spesliker (5:06:48 PM): I guess they figure if they have 150 DVXUSERs on crew, what the hell
happygobo (5:07:00 PM): Yeah, Fat Monster is the 800 pound gorilla around here.
spesliker (5:07:04 PM): Does that mean we have to curry favor with them? Suck up?
spesliker (5:07:05 PM): Do we have to trot out the obsequious fawning?
spesliker (5:07:06 PM): Must we employ the sycophantic brown-nosing?
spesliker (5:07:07 PM): The unctuous toadying?
happygobo (5:07:19 PM): Not us! Screw them!
spesliker (5:07:23 PM): Yes! Down with FAT MONSTER! And that little penguin character too!
happygobo (5:07:36 PM): Yes, he’s been all too friendly with them lately.
spesliker (5:07:51 PM): Who puts “conspiracy” in their title anyway? What’s that about?
spesliker (5:08:00 PM): I’m going to rename myself “Suspicious Ptarmigan”
spesliker (5:08:11 PM): Hey, maybe he’s just really into Linux.
happygobo (5:08:15 PM): Hey was that a “Baby Blaine ™” in the background?
spesliker (5:08:38 PM): Either that or it’s an otter of some sort. Maybe a ferret?
spesliker (5:08:40 PM): WTF?
spesliker (5:08:47 PM): Tell me I didn’t just see Rogan’s nasty ass!
happygobo (5:08:52 PM): What film are you watching?
spesliker (5:09:03 PM): Oh, right. I got switched to YouTube somehow.
happygobo (5:09:26 PM): Let’s go back to where they had the “Mark Harris Sucks” grafitti.
spesliker (5:09:37 PM): Yeah, that was the best part of O2. If they take down Harris maybe …
spesliker (5:09:40 PM): Yes!!! …. Take that RPDM. We meet again Mark Harris …
happygobo (5:09:44 PM): And this time the advantage is ours!!!! Bwa-ha-ha-ha
spesliker (5:09:44 PM): O2 and RPDM are gonna cancel each other out!!!!
spesliker (5:09:49 PM): That will leave just …US and SEATTLE GREEN fighting for first!!!!
happygobo (5:09:56 PM): Damn, it could happen!
happygobo (5:10:04 PM): But what about Aetas?
spesliker (5:10:05 PM): Don’t say that word around me.
spesliker (5:10:10 PM): We got into too much trouble with our last AIM session.
happygobo (5:10:28 PM): Yeah. Barry Green kept calling my house ….
spesliker (5:10:36 PM): No sh*t?
happygobo (5:10:40 PM): Yeah. … Say …. Seattle … GREEN???!!??
happygobo (5:10:46 PM): You don’t think?
happygobo (5:10:57 PM): Couldn’t be……
spesliker (5:11:20 PM): OMG! You may be right. Could Seattle be Barry’s code name?
happygobo (5:11:22 PM): I did notice a lot of Panasonic product placement in that one.
spesliker (5:11:27 PM): And all those billboards with the Sound DVD ads on them …
spesliker (5:11:30 PM): i mean ... it makes you wonder.
happygobo (5:11:36 PM): yeah. It really does.

spesliker (5:12:20 PM): From their thread you’d think there would be some off-color humor …
happygobo (5:12:25 PM): Or at least some shots of Tommy for comic relief ….
happygobo (5:12:35 PM): Speaking of which.
spesliker (5:12:38 PM): Yeah, I was just gonna say that f*cker is one weird looking dude.

Hiya Mark.

Well, you said to me that this fest you had something bigger in mind, and you didn't dissapoint. I felt a feeling of 'oh my god, I could never make anthing this polished' wash over me as I watched your short.

So I felt a mixture of 'wow' and 'god im depressed' as I watched it...lol

I read a little of this thread (you cant blame me for not reading it all!) and I'm impressed that you got most of this through sheer hard work and tenacity than you did buying everyone out. I'd love to do something this epic and I'd be well chuffed it I managed to do half of what you did here. It looked fantastic.

It was nice that you had restraint too. With a set so elaborate it would have been easy to have had a really complicated 'over the top' story and frenetic direction. But both were handled with a simplicity and confidence which is nice to see.

Good little reversal at the end. Ok, I saw it coming a touch before it hit, but that's minor. This is some really great work here and you have raised the bar on a technical level for everyone to aspire to.

Most of us will never get there, but thanks for the benchmark ;-)

Now I just want you to resurrect 'chow baby'...

Great job to every single person who worked on this film!

I like the uplifting nature of the script. It's such a common thing to go the dark route in short films. I am glad you were brave enough to spin something positive, and ultimately do such a great job.

This story reminded me a lot of the film Sunshine. Only in Sunshine they were all cut throats with not much projected hope for humanity. I didn't sympathize with those characters after a while. At first I thought that was the route of this film. I was very surprised and moved by its fresh direction.

The production reminded me of the 90's version of The Outer Limits. Well, it's better than that. It's just the feeling it gave me.

Great score Justin
outstanding hollywood style lighting design (looked like Aliens)
set design...wow How in the hell did you do this?

Well, with no pun intended, your SFX were out of this world. How the hell did you do that?

This had all the qualities of a major production. Man would I love to see what you could do with a few million bucks! (Um yeah, me too)

Phenomenal, and I'm no fan of SciFi.

I felt I didn't get quite enough info as to when and how the decision was made to spare the one in exchange for the two. Was there an update on oxygen levels?

That's about all I can nit pik.

I'm so glad The Moment After got DQ'd. I mean, who would actually CHOOSE to make a movie about sex rather than spaceships and science fiction? I'd much rather be looking at depth maps and CGI space cruisers than naked woman flesh, unless of course, the women are flashing their tits after taking a beer bong and yelling at me in Klingon. Now that would be exiting!

Alright, Blane had a good point, it doesn’t help anybody to sugar coat things so be forewarned: I’m going to say what I feel and you can take it or leave it, but it's how I feel at the moment and I'm working really hard to help people, not hurt feelings...

So here we go...

Nice opening shot. Is that Jupiter? Or a made up planet not in our solar system.

Like the dolly, is he green screened? He looks different from the rest of the frame.

0:16 I wish I knew how to composite. The light is coming from the wrong direction though. I’d probably buy it if she was backlit too.

0:19 Nice shot composition, always giving the viewer a “handle” so we know where we are. How the hell do you motion track like that?

0:25 I can’t tell what the woman is saying “we’re all green now”?

Sound design is fucking awesome!

Shots are awesome 1:20

1:58 love the close in on the dude handheld. Woo!

2:28 Not really buying the actresses performance, seems a hair forced.

Lighting and values are perfect, Damn.

3:09 do we need to cut back to the ship, I mean we know they’re on a ship.

3:25 actress seems forced again.

Lighting and camerawork is sooo good.

Red handles highlights better than an ‘80s hooker named Trixie.

Woman acting at 5:25 much better, less forced. But strong acting all around from the 3 of them, they did well.

5:38 again with the motion tracking, you bastards!

Nice dolly at end, I especially like the tracks and sandbags. Woo!

Really, really, REALLY great work fellas. I hope I can make stuff look like that someday. Just fucking brilliant.

Pat yourselves on the backs.
-Joe

That is, indeed, Jupiter. There are some amazingly wonderful Jupiter images available on the net. Raptor 365 did a terrific job creating the planet for our film.

I might also mention for those of you who are into textures, there's a gorgeous high-resolution Jupiter texture here:

That is, indeed, Jupiter.

I can't believe you didn't have more to say about this Mark...

Joe... yes, that is in fact, Jupiter... and that was by far the most expensive shot in the film. I suggested that Mark use Venus... or even Mars... because Jupiter was twice as far. I thought Mars made perfect sense, since it IS the red planet... but Mark's friend Larry hated the idea... he said it was too cliche' and if we didn't go all the way to Jupiter it would compromise the story. I barely got out the word "mars" when suddenly Lars Attacks! So I kept my mouth shut for what seemed like a lifetime, for the rest of the journey... free tip... don't pack RPDM with your snacks on an already really long road trip. This was even worse then the time I licked one of those before a high-school graduation ceremony. I thought we'd never even get past the moon.

The coolest thing about planetary cinematography... is that you really don't even need to bring the dolly... it was pretty easy to get smooth shots... well, it wasn't pretty... but it was easy. We had Super-Lou rig up an arm... which wasn't going well... but fortunately in space nobody can hear Lou scream.

At one point a rogue astroid came flying towards the ship and we all ship our pants... but Super-Lou kicked it into the sun...

That would be most wonderful indeed! All you'll need is to get yo'self to an L.A. airport (preferably Ontario as it is only 5 minutes from the Monster Shack out here on the East side of the metro area -- but we bounce around the city so that LAX or any of the other airports will work). We'd be extremely honored to have you shoot with us. We're hoping that rascal Harris will make it out in the near term, too.

Second viewing ...

I guess if this Fest had been 6:04, we wouldn't be having this conversation. The few shots of the ship's exterior seem too short and sweet.

I'm guessing (without freeze frame) that the ship had some damage?

I missed part of what was going on because the conversation was a little muffled. I finally got it.

What medicine was she injected with and why? Little too much 'Pulp Fiction' there with out a real explanation.

Last nit-pik ...

If they powered down all non-essentials, wouldn't that include the heat (Apollo 13)? Yet Trevor is hanging around in a tee shirt.

The ship's background noises really show attention to detail.

I'm gonna give it another look-see.

Yes. Also, depending on what car you drive you may be attacked by a bunch of hippies. Most people you see will be attractive and wearing little or no clothing. Every other car will have a surf board strapped to the roof and as soon as you enter the state you will feel your wallet being tugged at by the local congress.

Ridiculous and (mostly) untrue stereotypes aside, you should be fine.

Here's my official review... which is in no way biased since I worked on it :)

The movie rocks :) It's a significant push forward for the DVXuser fests. The production value across the board is strong and professional. It brings to light a thought/discussion I had with some other DVXusers not too long ago.. These fests have been around for a while now and there are some of us who have been here for a long time... As we grow as filmmakers, our work and those we work with are going to grow as well.. So it's inevitable that bigger films such as this are going to get made for these fests because for many of us, this place is where it all started. And I don't think anyone can dispute how much fun it is to make a film for a fest and be so readily involved in it. As even more years go by, and people on these boards continue to launch their careers.. I'm sure every now and then, they'll drop in with a short film ;)

Nice work Fat Monsters!!

Your film looked great...

Storywise... Three people on a spaceship with only enough air for two. The third wheel, our Hero, discovers that the other two intend to get rid of him (or so he and WE think). Wow! Great dilemna = Great premise! This should be f*ckn great! What's our Hero gonna do?!

Hero stands around. Beatch walks up to him. Hero seems perturbed, as if thinking, "If you kill me I'll never speak to you again!" Beatch stabs him. Moron, previously known as Hero, falls down. Dead? Who cares... the illusion has been shattered.

Moron wakes up, the rest of the film is fine. Great twist. Great ending.

This could have been better, as I see it, if after setting up your great premise, Hero did something worthwhile, and most importantly relevant to the dilemna. Many choices... my fav, he decides to kill them first! Conflict. Tension. Drama. Hero murders both of them with a wrench! Shocking and savage. We understand his primeval motivation, the survival instinct. What else could he have done?

THEN our blood drenched Hero finds the video message. Realization. Gut wrenching guilt. Cue Twilight Zone them, "Do do do do... "

Just a thought. Fat Monsta Rulz! Foshizzle!

Wow... 223 pages.. I don't know whats been said already but I'll just jot down my notes here and hope noone hates me at the end of it.

One the fatal flaws of this piece is the character development. I think biggest mistake was Trevor's character. The main character of the piece should be likable to the audience. He is absolutely not. He was sleeping on the job. He caused the entire crisis. His incompetence hurt another crew member. I can't think of an instance where he was likable at all.

I have to refer to a snippet from a book I read once that used Serpico as an example. At the beginning of the movie, Pacino is running a sting, and he catches a bunch of cons looking to score. One of them shows up late with his kid in tow. Now Pacino could arrest the guy and embarrass him in front of his kid. Instead he says- 'Catch you later.' and flashes his badge. From that point on- we the audience are WITH him no matter where he takes us.

I think thats why the piece as a whole falls flat for me as an audience member is because this guy doesn't deserve squat. Natalia and Sam aren't being played as overtly sinister to misdirect us as a counter-balance to guide the plot to climax. So for me as the audience at the end I'm disappointed because Trevor doesn't deserve this sacrifice and I really wasn't fooled into thinking it was going to play out any other way.

There were other things I could nitpick, especially at the level you guys are operating- like the lack of camera movement, some of the shots were disorienting, etc. But really I think with the production value you did achieve none of that would have mattered if the characters were engaging to begin with.

I do appreciate all the time effort and cost that went into this. Thank you for making it.
