If you don't have any money, either make some, or befriend someone who has it. Those are all parts of the filmmaking game.
Will this be the subject of your next training DVD? :)

Huh? Mark said somewhere in this ginormous thread that a Red rental exchange was made, but not actual pay.
An exchange was made, an exchange of cash.

I gave Mark an Indie rate on his Indie short in exchange for some services.

Mark Johnson
06-11-2008, 10:46 AM
Yeah, I didn't say we didn't pay cash for the camera rental, just that we worked out a deal that was very favorable cash-wise because of what we were able to bring to the table. Similarly, we got the studio set for next to nothing, but still had to pay the stage manager who had to be on set for two days as well as paying for the big power we used when running the big dog lights. We also had to pay for the regular cleanup charge when we wrapped.

In the end we were able to shoot this on a true shoestring because of some wheeling/dealing and schmoozing (along with old fashioned generosity and donations).

Ha ha ha. ..... At least I'm not wearing the shirt. :)

So, here it is Thursday and we've got 17 effects shots to finish. Sounds familiar, eh? Well, this time at least we've got some truly skilled assistance (Thankyou Raptor365) and we hooked up with the RenderTITAN render farm in Dallas. I gotta give those guys some serious props. Not only have they been incredibly accommodating, their 25 cents/GHz/Hour rate is the best deal I've found so far worldwide (and they will beat any lower rate if you can find it). We had a shot that was going to take approximately 3 days for a ten second render on Raptor's system and the farm spit it out in an hour at a cost of just over $3. Jeez Loueez. At these speeds and these rates we're thinking of doing a whole series of facial mole replacements and eye color changes. :)

Well as my time comes to an end in LA, I want to thank Mark and Tim for being such gracious hosts over at the Fat Monster abode. (where the Dude abides) I was coming to stay for a week, and then a week turned into two and change. A lot of good things happened because of it and having a place to jump off from was essential to those things. (more on that later and the many people from dvxuser who played key roles. That's for another thread at another time.)

Mark is such a free spirit and would give you the shirt off his back, or bed or car for that matter. Tim is a special young talent and redefines chill as he walks through life. I am so happy for you and what you accomplished with O2. I think you will look back at the film as the defining moment when the paradigm shifted forever for both of you. great stuff ahead!

Thanks again guys, I hope to make it out to rancho one more time before I leave, but if I don't, you have an open ended visit in Boston anytime you want. I really enjoyed spending time with you both. I'll be in touch regardless.

Ya, that resistance series is series directed by Adrian Picardi... I scored 4 of his last films.. Plus, Matt Thompson the lead actor from my "Cristo" film has a role in the project too.

Definitely cool stuff.

*** on the scoring front, I just finished up the first pass of the O2 music... I'll have to see what the bossmen think. :)

Cheers!

Yeah, that series looks pretty cool. Except I mean, come on. If two naked chicks walked into the middle of my big-ass coke deal for no reason, I would be pretty suspicious from the get-go...

Mark Harris

Dawn has arrived over Los Angeles. The swollen sanguine orb of sol casts giddy shadows from the palm fronds as I wake up on the floor of the Fat Monster production office. Somewhere around 2:00 a.m. I took a break from motion tracking only to fall into slumber with unsettling dreams of caribou carcasses playing in my head. For a brief moment I panicked as I looked at the clock and calendar. Then I got oriented and realized it is still only Saturday with the upload deadline more than 48 hours away! A veritable eon of time remains to finish the 17 remaining effects shots! Not to mention the major pickup shot we're doing at Laurel Canyon stages this morning with Matty G and the RED. I love the smell of pixels in the morning! Time to drag myself to the Coffee Bean for a latte......

Ok, we're back from the set where Tim, Matty G. and I shot a pickup scene with Todd Lowe. Man, we owe one to Murphy because somehow everything came together (fortunately Laurel Canyon Studios had 2 hours open for us to shoot - fortunately Sam's RED wasn't committed to another project - fortunately Dragon Dronet got back in town in time to let us borrow one of our costumes). So now we're coming down the home stretch finishing effects here in L.A., in Nebraska (Nathaniel Caauwe: RotoNinja) and in Canada (Gord Taylor 3D God) while Justin Durban and Brad Semenoff finish the score/sound mix respectfully. We hope Murphy stays away for one more day and we'll do the unthinkable (upload before Monday gets here).

We hope to have a party in the thread tomorrow night with some typical FAT MONSTER inanity. Rumor has it that Disjecta is coming to town with a bottle of cheap wine and a couple of expensive strippers. We should be able to go over 1600 when we post those pictures.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't popped in here yet! I guess I got so tied up with my own entry and all the other crap I had to deal with (which eventually caused my film to implode upon itself) that I never had a chance. Then, I was so intimidated my the number of pages that I kind of stayed away for a week or so out of pure fright. But now I am here! And it looks like I am just in time:

I am the student and you are, still, the master: my Caymus and Opus One bottles obviously tell me that I've been getting the wine-to-stripper expense ratio wrong.

Awesome news on getting the perfect, extra shots you needed.

The caterer called. They're out of caribou. Sending 40 lb of marinated seal flipper
instead. He figured 40# would be enough - it grows as you chew it. It's refrigerated air freight from the Pribilof Islands so he needs your AMEX number again - PM it to me.

Alex told me that he received your PM and is beginning to work on your title treatment. He is aware of the deadline, and I do hope that he will be able to churn out something great before the time strikes.

If not, he has been instructed to let you know with enough time to create your own, and have compression time. -- Maybe I'd send him another PM to push him along?

What does a sound editor do differently than a normal editor (other than the very obvious)?

Is it adding foley and that sort of thing, or are they actually cutting the dialog to the locked picture? ...and if so, how do you give them all of the audio files?

How do you do your compression? I was looking through all of the LoveFest films to get a feel for the quality of compression, and Where the Heart Lies looked great.

Are you going to be able to fit a quality 5.1 mix in the 50mb? (not doubting your abilities)

What does a sound editor do differently than a normal editor (other than the very obvious)?

Is it adding foley and that sort of thing, or are they actually cutting the dialog to the locked picture? ...and if so, how do you give them all of the audio files?

I cut dialog using an OMF from Tim's FCP session. I also used a lot of alt takes to fix bad lines, etc. That part was made a lot easier thanks to Matt's extensive production sound notes. And yes, Matt, I did read all of your notes and anecdotes. On a side note, I wanted to thank Matt for doing a great job with the production sound and recording extensive wild takes for audio. Those were a HUGE help!!

Like Mark said, I then cut in all of the hard effects and backgrounds: spaceship sounds, big flying things, cloth rustle, etc. Finally I added some sound design elements to sweeten Justin's incredible score and we ended up with something similar to the final product. I'm pretty proud of the way that it turned out and I'm anxious to hear what people have to say about the film.

Fun O2 Post Sound Trivia!
11 Dialog Tracks
12 Background Tracks
24 FX Tracks

The sounds of the ship are partly comprised of recordings that I made of my clothes washer, my refrigerator, and traffic sounds, though I doubt that anyone will recognize them.

We've been trying different compression recipes to squeeze out the best possible picture to accompany this amazing sound track. We're going to try a couple more tweaks and then slide into home with our upload.

Thanks everyone who put in so much hard work (and especially Matty G. for staying up all night with us).

Unfortunately, we have to get back to the real world again. We've got a forensic case that we're going to be going to San Pedro on as soon as we finish our upload. Sigh. But we gotta pay the bills.

Well, the little fraulein sitting on my lap thinks the film is a raw depiction of man's polar extremes and a cautionary tale for those who ignore hubris. So, who am I to disagree with her? She says that O2 left her breathless and exhilarated to the point that her heart palpated and beads of sweat broke out on her brow. However, I think it may have been mainly because we're too cheap to turn on the a.c.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to talk a little bit about our Nebraska connections, which have become very important to Fat Monster. Many of you know that Kyle Stebbins is a charter Monster who has been studying film out on the plains in Lincoln, Nebraska. Kyle has flown out for the majority of our productions and we have come to depend on him. His good friend Alex Jeffery came out to shoot with us a couple years ago (and he actually played a fireman in a performance that has become a cult favorite from TTN) and many of you know Alex from his own projects here on DVXUSER. This year Alex jumped in on short notice in the middle of the night to create a title sequence for us. We didn't realize that Matty G. had already animated the title but, Alex, we're going to use your sequence as part of a post-fest website by the way. Anyway, it was his willingness to come to the aid of the monster that we will always remember.

Another interesting Nebraska connection occurred with regard to our opening sequence. When you see the film you'll be aware of a radio broadcast during the first scene. That broadcaster is none other than John Marquis of Ogallala, Nebraska. John has over three decades of experience in working in every facet of broadcasting, including operations, programming, executive management, being an on-air personality and training. I went to high school with John and when we decided at the last minute to add a radio broadcast I , of course, called him.

John went down to his station and recorded our program and uploaded it the next day via the net. We used royalty-free music and John made up the patter in his broadcast using names of guys he and I grew up with back in the late 70's. So the great state of Nebraska will always be a favored location for Fat Monster strictly because of the internet.

Speaing of the net, I should mention that my friend John was fooling around one day trying to make an old barbershop fragrance called "Bay Rum." He apparently remembered it from his dad and when he couldn't find it he set about researching how to make it. He made a few bottles in his basement and sold them to friends and started a website mainly as a lark. He now has 30+ items and just got word that his products are being picked up by the Duluth Trading Company and will be included in their next catalog. John says he's probably going to finally leave radio and work full time on his burgeoning Bay Rum empire!: http://www.ogallalabayrum.com/

Hey Frank, Simon has been boasting how his film is going to destroy yours. He posted this yesterday:

NO AIR is going to clean UNZEIT's clock. Frank is going to be coming to Cologne to study film after this fest.

Yeah, he's not the only one who will be bashed. You're next in line. From the picture of your spaceship I found, I can tell that my Intro alone is better than your whole film :D

Mark, I want to apologize to you. Your film is definitely going to kick my film's ass. In fact, my film is right now cowering in the corner shaking like a little girl because it knows O2 is going to own it. By the time the screenings are done my only goal is to not be banned forever from the forum. Please people. Hate the message - not the messenger. Thank you.

Simon, you are a gentleman and there is nothing to be ashamed of for making a film that sucks. We have done that many times ourselves. So you go ahead and suck proudly Simon! ...

Simon Höfer

Suck proudly... that sounds.. err... wrong :D

But I have to admit that I am really looking forward to O2! It's going to kick ass and "No Air" won't be any competition at all for you. No worries.

I learned alot and thats all what counts and I am still proud of my film. This fest truly was/is a blast!

I wish you the best Fat Monsters! I will have a drink on you for this entertaining thread

I don't post too much in these here threads but let me go ahead and get this out of the way before the sky falls:

You guys did a hell of a job and I know the finished product is going to be one of the best, if not THE best, DVXfest entry ever. When all of the comments start rolling in please be just who you are-- everyone who worked on this-- and just let em roll.

Mark, thanks for the kind words about Nebraska. It's been a real pleasure getting to know you over the last couple of years. Even outside of filmmaking, Mark, you are a great friend to have and I'll never forget the first time I came out to hang whichu. From Palm Valley, to the loft at Palos, to Rancho... you've come a long way, and I'm proud to say I know you.

Fat Monster, in a lot of ways, has been a big inspiration to me (and my peers). I have you to thank for that, Mark man.

Blaine, Tim, and Bullis are great people, too, and have made my trips out to California BLISSFUL. It hurts... only because I wish I could be there all the time.

I also want to mention another person here in Nebraska that should make the top ten list =) Nate Caauwe! VFX GURU!

Mark Johnson rocks. Period. I've had the honor to know him since 7th grade in Ellinwood, Kansas. We have info on each other we'll have to take to our graves....most of which we were involved in together. Mostly legal, though. I'm very proud of my ole buddy and deeply honored I was asked to do the background DJ bit for the opening scene of O2.

And all this talk about Nebraska is just way too cool. One of the most under-rated states in the country.

The best to everyone...especially Mark.

When I started my post mentioning the great Nebraska help we've received I actually intended to mention Nate Caauwe first. Somehow I got distracted and neglected him. We could NOT have finished this film without Nate's help. The guy is a true monster and he stayed up all night completing effects with us. Tim and I had a great day in Hollywood today (just getting home at 1:30 a.m.) First we went by Laurel Canyon Stages and then Renegade Effects where we screened O2 as a thank you to both facilities for helping us. We were really blown away by the response we received and it gives us great hopes that you all are going to appreciate the film.

Then we met Luis (super Luis) in Hollywood to see "The Happening" (it wasn't, by the way) and then all three of us were the guests of Morgan Sheppard

for his class at the Vince Chase acting workshop. Those of you who are fans of the HBO series ENTOURAGE will appreciate that the main character was named Vince Chase by Mark Wahlberg as a tribute to the great acting coach. We did get introduced to Vince Chase, who briefly came into the class, but Morgan ran the show and really gave us an insiders view of how serious actors work.

It was a real pleasure watching Morgan's students, and even more of a pleasure watching Morgan critique and direct them. The whole night he told stories from his long career in the business (i.e., the time he worked opposite of Michael Caine who told him "f*ck you" right before he delivered his lines, his times with Marlon Brandon, the time he worked with David Lynch, the time he worked with Henry Fonda etc. etc.)

Morgan honored us by introducing us to his class and telling them that he respects us for giving an honest effort to make it as indie filmmakers. He also invited us to provide him with some scenes from our own scripts ahead of time so that next time he could have the class do interpretations from the material for us.

The workshop lasted almost four hours and we found ourselves truly inspired by watching these pros work. Here's a couple low-res pics from the iPhone:

I guess this is the film to beat.

Ha! Thanks for the compliment, but we have little doubt that the film to beat is lurking out there right now. We are just happy to have produced a film that we are proud of. We feel the same way we did last time out with "Where The Heart Lies." The fact that we felt we had done well and had created a film that our hard working crew could be proud of was all that really mattered. We were ecstatic to place third and if we can place again this time it will be gravy. The truth is that we have some amazing storytellers here and all the technical chops in the world are subordinate to the underlying story. The one thing we do promise is that we will keep getting better.
