On the other hand, I don't like the idea of the voting being a popularity contest. If the films were anonymous and everyone would just have to vote purely on which one was best we would probably get a much better sense of which one was a better film.
We are constantly evaluating the fests and the voting system in order to ensure complete fairness. We have changed the way voting works before, and if/when we feel that it needs to be adjusted again, we will do so.
As for a "popularity" contest -- a massive thread probably means that many people will be AWARE of the film, and that they will WATCH the film, but that doesn' mean they'll vote for it! Pre-voting hype is fun and all, but once viewing opens and people start commenting on the films, we usually see the popularity of certain films' threads skyrocket -- the better the film is, the more likely people are to go in and comment, which makes the thread more popular, which raises awareness, which gets people to watch and vote, and basically the whole thing takes care of itself.
It's like this: Hollywood hypes the living snot out of many films, and they do so in order to get a big opening weekend. But once Friday night hits, the reviews are out. And while some might be swayed to go see a movie by a film's ads, lots of people are swayed by the reviews as to whether to go see it or not. And ultimately, people go on IMDB and vote how they felt about a film based on whether they liked it or not.

Luis Sinibaldi has retained FAT MONSTER FILMS to handle his marketing and branding for his HD monitors. We are rolling out a major campaign that will leverage the public's affinity for cute animals.

What? You guys are in LA?? I am so out of it I thought you were in NY! Cool! Maybe I can swing down sometime!
Matt, you're not serious are you???
Plus the quality of the "red camera" is stellar!
That is too funny! I don't have a "Red camera" but my wife has a "Pink camera." I wonder how that compares!
........
DEMO!!! Nice to see you at the ranch! Hope you had a great flight.

Barry, I know what you mean by the voting, and I know you guys keep striving for the best method. Thank you.

I personally think my "red camera" shot film "No Time (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=128675)" is going to come in first! I mean I have an awesome crew. Plus the quality of the "red camera" is stellar!
:cheesy: :2vrolijk_08: That was funny.
My thoughts on DVXUSER CREWS and POPULARITY

Don't be intimidated; be motivated. If what FAT MONSTER, or the MOD SQUAD or JDS or the handful of other killer talent that is starting to emerge raises the bar, then so must you.
Shoot for the stars.

this is all true but can't help but be a small bit intimidated when you hear "JACK DANIEL STANLEY" or "FAT MONSTER", but none the less we Texas boys strive on learning from our Sages along the way (I think thats the right word/spelling)
Note to self in order to bring down the god heads of JDS and Fat Monster I must shoot the night sky for my next fest entry...Stars and only stars...CHECK!

I myself have no issues with who is working on the movie. It's the voting process that bothers me.
This is why I believe that movies like Winter Lilacs slip through the cracks. Their thread received nothing but praise yet it didn't even place.
I think we need a separate judging panel myself. Why not see if a movie review site will judge for us? Just a thought.
Either way, this is a great community and I'm happy to be a part of it.
I also wish Fat Monster all the best!
Spielberg is dropping by to help me out so I'm good.

Earlier this week we lost one of our cast members (Eric Trosman) who was flying out from Maryland. One of the challenges when producing ultra low budget productions like this is definitely casting. Eric was coming out to work for us basically for free (we had a plane ticket for his travel). Unfortunately, his work commitments made it impossible for him to make the trip.
We've been in this place before (losing our lead actress the day before shooting Where The Heart Lies.) Fortunately, we live in the middle of what is one of the biggest pools of acting talent in the country. Even more fortunately, we have Jack Daniel Stanley on the crew and he went through his mental rolodex and recalled Todd Lowe, who he studied acting with (they both got BFAs in Acting/Performance from University of Texas).
Todd plays Zack Van Gerbig on Gilmore Girls and you've seen him in The Princess Diaries (Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway), Redline (Nadia Bjorlin, Angus Macfadyen) and Where the Heart Is (Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd). You'll soon see him in the new HBO series True Blood with Anna Paquin.
We're delighted and honored to have Todd join our cast.

Sabi is actually using its contacts in the Hollywood quagmire to put together a short film festival. there will be a jury award, an audience award and a TBA "celebrity director" known for psychological thrillers who will personally view your film and choose the top film of the fest. we're calling it.... Sabi Fest. we've got some huge sponsors lined up enabling us to book a theater and run a legitimate, filmmaker-friendly festival. stay tuned, we've got some unique ideas that should appeal to the community spirit of indie filmmaking... or as i've come to call it... interdependent filmmaking.

The Popularity Vote thing gets brought up every fest I think and it's a concern worth bringing up. However, the winners of the fests always show that it's not about popularity.
6" RPM EP wasn't the "popular" crew in Love Fest, Fat Monster was still the popular thread. No one should be intimidated by crews, in the end voting is [mostly] anonymous and I think that people are really voting honestly.

Yeah Fat Monster, being the hugest thread, won 3rd - not 1st in Love Fest.
The first place film was a completely unknown member.
The second place film was a very small drama with two people sitting on a porch.
When I won 2nd in Zombie fest no one had ever heard of me and so on, and so on and so on.
One thing that's certain is the cream seems to rise to the top. Now fine discernment between which of the top films is better is a much tougher thing . But, as far as I know, we're implementing a new voting system this time that should shake things up a bit this time.

Just saw the new Indy. Figured I toss up a spoiler to ruin the fun for everyone else...
WARNING: INDIANA JONES SPOILER BELOW
Indiana Jones gets pregnant in the second act. He gets really badly beaten up by Chewbacca as well. Only a few people will ever read this, at least until they see the movie... most people are probably whipping their head away from the screen quickly, "whoa, I don't wanna see that...no way..."

It's such a pleasure to host so many DVXusers.
Especially Jack Daniel Stanley.
I've always had respect and admiration for Jack, but now my feelings have developed even further. And how could they not. I mean he is one handsome man. If you are getting a strong broke back mountain vibe you are reading me correctly. I'm not entirely comfortable discussing these newly budding sexual feelings here after 55 years of heterosexuality, but I can't help myself.
I want to scream it from the roof tops.
I love Jack.

:love4:

Hmm ... Mark I'm flattered. But this post doesn't sound like you. In fact, it's almost as if you left your account logged on in a houseful of DVXusers and someone else posted under your name.
Bwaahahhahahhaaahaaahaaaaaa
That'll teach you to leave your computer turned on and logged in to DVXUSER 24/7, Mark!
(hmmmmmmm....... why didn't I think of that clever stunt while I was out there shooting with Mark last year! Good one, Jack!)

Everybody is up. The coffee is on. Bosindy is hogging the hot water. We're getting set to go do a prelight.

Hey Monsters....
I like to travel well-equipped but in an effort to expedite my time at the airports, I am not checking any luggage.
Therefor, I will not have my:
Leatherman utility tool (I don't know HOW I am going to survive for 3 days without that!)
or any tools. (I have a feeling that they may not understand why I am bringing a c-wrench on the plane.)
I am sure that you guys are cool with that... but the real intent of this post is to REQUEST SOME TOOLS! I am just going to feel completely inadequate not being properly equipped! :crybaby:
Ted Arabian

While I am packing.... is there anything that I can bring?
i am sure that you are covered but I do have Gaffer's Tape, Marking Tape, Spike Tape...
Speaking of tape... anyone have a spare Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ they sell me!
if so, please bring it to the set.

But yeah this summer...I'm good at carrying things too. There ain't nothing Jeff and Dustin can't carry!! Except I can't carry myself...kinda impossible, unless I were to cut myself in half and carry my bottom half...(which I just might do for a plane tix out there this weekend!!!)

One of the great things about making films in the indie trenches is the need to wear so many hats. Its amazing the talent pool that a typical collection of DVXUSERs really represents. And, even more importantly, its a chance to learn. When I worked with Jack on Rekindled we had a 3-man crew (including Jack) and we had to cover all the bases. We've got guys assigned to grip that never have before, but who Super Luis has brought up to speed in an afternoon. It's really great seeing so many guys stretching themselves.

5:00 a.m. and Monster House is stirring. Coffee is made, but appears rather thick and pungent. Perhaps I should have measured instead of guessing. At least it will wake the guys up. We've only got two showers so its sort of musical chairs to see who doesn't get to take one before we hit the road. Jack was up way late last night distressing some costume items with spray paint and the joint smells like taggers have been at it in force. We'll be hitting the road at 5:45 to head to Hollywood where young Stebbs shall be trying to prove himself worthy of the appellation "monster." You can see his eyes darting nervously about as he looks for signs of approval while fearing another hard slap of the hand to the back of his head. .....

Adam Cultraro (Taormina) stopped by the set today to wish us well and reported that he's got over 70 minutes of Corrado edited along with the trailer. DVXUSER Mike Insane also came by and introduced himself. Mike is a producer/editor as well as a popular DJ here in Hollywood and he's agreed to spin for the big TimeFest screening party we're setting up for the finalists. Justin Durban, our composer (and the composer for the twenty or so other entries that Hermann Witkam isn't doing), stopped by as did Brad Semenoff (our sound designer).
We went past our seven-o'clock deadline and didn't clear Laurel Canyon's parking lot until 10:30 p.m. at which time Bullis discovered his transmission shot craps. In typical Bullis fashion he walked over to the stage manager, handed him his keys and simply said "later". Bullis had planned to drive north to Oakland (what's with this proclivity to head to Oakland this weekend?) for a gig and, thus, we were delighted to have him join us for an impromptu wrap party.
We all ended up at a little all-night diner in Hollywood staffed by surly and yet efficient waitresses and a menu that featured food from all points of the compass along with cold Heinekins. Tim, Blaine and Hudson had already headed for the monster house and we found them nicely toasted by the time we got in. It's 2:28 a.m. and we've finally got the internet running again so I can post this. You rock, Zak. If you're up for it, how about working out a joint SABI / FAT MONSTER sponsored screening party? You guys have the class and we've got the chicks. (just kidding) But seriously, how about putting something together with us?

Tim and Mark simply rock. I am in awe of their extraordinary skills and absolute moral compasses that stand shining above the vicissitudes of stench and decay that typify Hollywood. I pledge allegiance to the Monster and to all for which it stands. One Bullis and one beverage for all.

it sucks, i'm looking at my calendar and IFHY is going to be taking me to Pennsylvania June 16th-23rd and Salt Lake City 25th-30th. it's likely the timefest screening would be smack dab in the middle of all that, right?
ps - next time you see Matty, will you ask him if he wants to go with us to Big Sur for 2 days in late July? And if he wants his own cabin or if he wants to crash on the couch? AND if he wants to bring anyone? AND that I need to pick his brain about Avatar. AND TO F*CKING CALL ME!!!
Mark Johnson
05-26-2008, 05:01 AM
Zak, you should come by Luis's place tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 for his big barbecue. Matty will be there along with the rest of the monsters. If you can't make it we will pass on the notes. And if he's doing something lame like going to Kentucky we will take that couch and bring a couple playmates and allow you to pick our brains about Avatar.

hey hey now, There's nothing wrong with Kentucky. :)
Ashley Judd, Muhammad Ali, Abe Lincoln, Johnny Depp, Gus Van Sant, John Carpenter, etc....
It's a beautiful state and boring as sh*t at the same time. (if you live in a small po-dunk town)

ha ha! The lameness was NOT related to Kentucky! (My ex-wife is from Lousville and I became enamored with the city and state after visiting there.) The critique of our friend was his decision to bolt California for any other destination rather than hanging with us.

I'm off to airport! My time here in California has been great and working on the set was a blast. It was great to meet the great folks of dvxuser, finally in person. This is truly where the core of the community lies.

We're wrapped Mark. For awhile there it was touch and go. The RED workflow is definitely like film in a lot of ways and shots take longer from the get go. We fell substantially behind for awhile and I give Tim a lot of credit for being able to catch up without losing coverage we needed. The whole crew deserves accolades for hanging in and stepping up when they needed to.

What a rad shoot. 1AD 'ing for Tim and Fat Monsta was a total honor.
Awesome awesome awesome set and soundstage; I wanted colonial marines and aliens personally. Meeting everyone face to face was a treat; love putting faces to names and Barry Green was there; I see him more in SoCal than in North Carolina.
Overall, a smooth shoot sans typical issues and time constraint; but very smooth. Everyone worked very hard and without complaint. Is this the biggest DVXUSER shoot yet ?

And here's Luis getting down with some BBQ. Note the non-flushing toilet next to his feet. Due to fear that his cats would get out, Luis asked the "boys" to pee into this bowl although the "girls" were allowed to go inside. He has a large bedspread that two people hold up to preserve modesty for those micturating but the proximity to the grill was a bit disturbing.

Just dropped Jack off at the airport. He got away with losing only one item (a book on the Coroner's Office in Pennsylvannia). That's pretty good for the monster shack as most people lose more than a handful of items after staying here a week (theories abound as to whether mini-black holes are responsible or whether it is the work of elves or merely common thievery by the monsters).
Mike Hechanova is still here and his plane doesn't depart until this afternoon so we'll have to see what personal belongings of his are M.I.A. then (he did lose $1,200 but that is another story entirely). As I write this he is quietly seething in his sleep on the pull-out sofa bed. We've come to appreciate him and his peculiar antics to the point that Tim and I have pledged to make a visit to New York before the end of the summer so that we can visit all the East Coast User crew.
That will leave only Bosindy and we're delighted that he's extending his visit into next week. He's become a full member of the team and we've got some mutually beneficial tasks ahead of us that we're looking forward to getting started.
Tim has been consulting with Geoff Reisner and has got the workflow down so that he'll be starting the edit today. Yesterday was devoted to organization of the footage and proxies and everything looks great.
Yesterday we were able to take Mike and Jack over to Palos Verdes to our dear friends' home where we shot Where The Heart Lies. Here's a few pics from the visit. Afterwards we had a great lunch by the pier at Manhattan Beach. It was a great day and we all wished Ted and Diane could have been here as the sun finally came out fully.

OMG! Look at what I JUST missed out on... damn... now the sound notes are going to be muddled with spelling mistakes because I have no choice but to add Kahlua to my coffee in order to ease the pain... they dumped me at the airport and then did THAT!
The whole reason we do this stuff is to live the experience that I just returned home from... WTF was I thinking when I said I had to come home to get "other work" done!?
Thanks to everybody out there for making it the most kick-ass film-making experience I've been part of... really I can't find the words to express my gratitude for your hospitality.
Everybody was so much cooler then I thought they could be... "the dude abides" seemed like a funny little Lebowski reference, but it's freakin' TRUE... Mark IS "The Dude"... easily the coolest mofo I've ever met... EVER.
Tim is almost tied for first place... he's cool as sh*t also... and Luis earns the respect of his nickname, "Super Lou" every day. (You'd never guess that the guy is also "piss your pants" funny.)
I could keep going on for everybody, as if this was some kind of speech, but believe me, if you ever get lucky enough to step foot in the monster house, you GOTTA' go live it for yourself.

MattinSTL completely rocks and he was officially inducted as a monster yesterday in a rather bizarre scene that some day must be put on film. We will not shoot anything substantial without this guy. Seriously.
One of my big regrets is that I didn't record JDS doing his Matt impersonation yesterday. It was hilarious and he completely has Matt's voice down.
Matt fit in seamlessly and put up with the bizzarro-world that is the monster shack as though he lived here for a decade. I can't say enough about this guy and how much he changed our world view.
Yesterday morning we were all frantically trying to work out a way to extend his ticket up until the last minute. Dude, I wish you could have been with us but there will definitely be a next time SOON.
Matt, I hope your evening was as special as you hoped :) Mine consisted of waking up and having a snoring, seething-with-anger Hechanova draped over the sofa bed. Not a pretty sight.
