Yo Ted! Hope you hang here often. We're probably going to get "the shirt" out pretty soon but you'll get a pass. Also hope you can make a trip to the left coast too.

Ted Arabian
03-01-2008, 09:56 AM
Thanks Man! Yeah, I need a trip to CA. If for any reason to GET AWAY FROM THIS SNOW!!!!

It is snowing again here. Third time this week. I believe that we are within 10 inches of breaking the record. Seriously.

As for the shirt... those days have been immortalized for me on the TTN thread. I don't think it will ever be the same (but I will keep tabs on the action just incase! )

We are excited and delighted to announce that

n8ture

I almost wish I hadn't deciphered the title because now my weekend is shot since I'll be spending it all on the uber secret web page.

Fat Monster Films will most likely be named in a civil suit after my wife divorces me for spending so much time on the secret web page.

My God people, when you said there was stuff there that couldn't be posted on DVXUser, sheesh I thought it was all BS. Was I ever wrong!

I was thinking about entering my own film in Timefest but Mark and gang has basically fucked that idea by giving me access to the uber super secret page.
You ba$tards don't play fair at all!!!!

Drew Ott
03-01-2008, 12:42 PM
N8ture isn't lying.

I haven't left the page since last night.

Hold on, I've got it:

"Old hmmhmm Bastards Something?"

Am I on the right track?

If not, does it have anything to do with Michael Bolton?

I really want to see your special page...

Matthew R. Rodwell
03-01-2008, 12:51 PM
The answer is in the Rick Roll video, watch it close and you will figure it out.

Brandon Rice

It took me this long to dig out of the damn snow we have here too Ted! Sheesh, almost 70 inches here and more on the way!!!

But, that doesn't mean jack now that I have access to the super secret site!!!

Mark Johnson
03-01-2008, 01:16 PM

JACK DANIEL STANLEY

Tom Marshall

Hey Mark, rumor has it that the FBI is investigating the content of the über secret web site. Is there any truth to that rumor?

Hey Mark, rumor has it that the FBI is investigating the content of the über secret web site. Is there any truth to that rumor?

The lawyers of the uber secret web site have requested that their be no discussions about the "illeged photographs" currently in question.

Mark Johnson
03-01-2008, 01:27 PM
OMG .... here comes another. No less than the esteemable

DJ LEWIS

has deciphered the text. However, rumor has it that he has incriminating photos that he used to persuade Jack Stanley to cough up the deciphering.

Ted Arabian
03-01-2008, 01:49 PM
Kevin, that was stunning. One favorite image after another!

I was going to say that I loved the flight of the Canadian Geese, then the time-lapse right after that was nice and then the water running under the frozen ice and then came the time-lapse of the sunset! And then the final shot! Jeez!

Beautiful stuff, Kevin. Really gorgeous work.

Thanks for sharing.

My ONLY complaint is.... I'VE SEEN ENOUGH SNOW!!!!!!!!!! :)

.........

by the way, I have no qualms about jacking this thread! LOL!

The cumulative IQ of the Friends Of Fat Monster has gone up with the addition of MENSA member

BRANDON RICE!
B-man is one of the few people around here who can not only truthfully claim to have produced a feature picked up for distribution, but who is in the midst of shooting his second real-deal picture. Welcome to the party Brandon. Wipe your shoes before you come into the uber secret site!

n8ture

Yea, I have to say I have always admired Kevin's work every since I saw the wolf footage a few years back. Great stuff!

Kevin, what do you use for rain/moisture protection for the HVX?. I was actually looking at the kata crc -15 today.

I just used a clear plastic bag. Cost me like $.25 :)

I have the Porta brace rain slicker but it's a pain in the ass to get on easily and with the mattebox doesn't really fit anyway.

So I cut a hole in the end of the bag to slip over the mattebox then cut a slit in the bottom to allow the camera to sit on a tripod as well as hold it in place and I could flip out the LCD and see fine through the clear plastic. Worked like a charm.

I got the idea off the super secret Fat Monster Films site but they were using whipped cream, baby oil and Hershey's chocolate. I figure if it worked for them, should work for me! :)

Man o' man was I ever wrong. I don't know what to say. I'm kind of in awe of you guys. First your love fest entry, and now this ... let's just say I've got some serious thinking to do about life, filmmaking, and the art of war.

I'm DPing "Three Night Stay" but I'm going to try as hard as I can to get my own entry in.

My original idea was to work with some people my own age, and I hunted down some people in my area. The typical conversation went like this:

Me: Hey, I hear you like filmmaking. Interested in working on a project?
Them: Yes.
Me: I'm writing the script now and once I have a draft written I'll try to set up a meeting with everybody interested.
Them: I'll direct it if you don't mind.

Mark I don't think you properly warned everybody about the secret web page. For everybody's safety, I'd like to say a few things.

1) Don't enter with food in your mouth.
2) If you have ever had heart problems, this site is not for you.
3) Those who are easily addicted should do themselves and their family a favor and not enter.
4) The color scheme and motion may upset some. I recommend warming up with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukyHLv8Ulg0 (not a rickroll)

Some joker came along and voted our formerly FIVE STAR thread rating down. The bastards!!!! No doubt some disgruntled victim of the rampant rick-rolling that has been unchecked on our thread.

As a protest I am ASKING you to vote our thread ONE STAR. We want to have the LOWEST STAR rating of any thread. (frankly, given our content, the rating just may even be deserved). So, please rate our thread CRAPPY!!!! We'll wear that badge with honor!

what's the secret page, can i get access? :D

To get access you have to DECODE the title of our entry (see my banner below or look at the poster at the front of the thread). There are some clues in the thread about it so I'll go ahead and repeat them here: 1) The first word is NOT "the"; 2) it is a simple substitution cipher that merely replaces letters with symbols; 3) the other way to decode it is to find the FREE FONT that we used to encode the title. It's available from a company that specializes in providing comic book fonts.

GOOD LUCK!

Mark Johnson

Mark, what part do you still draw by hand? why not preparing everything in frameforge?

Hello Tomas. Our hand drawn stuff is very rough but can be done extremely quickly. FrameForge3D allows you to work accurately with virtual lenses and scaled sets. However, it takes time to not only set up the environment in FrameForge, but also to pose the actors and position the camera. Therefore, it often is much more efficient to block out a scene with crude hand sketches.

FrameForge3D is very useful to get accurate camera positions and shot framings as long as you take the time to build your set in the program with proper dimensions and scaled props. I actually consider FrameForge3D to be more of a PREVIZ tool than a storyboard substitute. If you have the time to work with it, you can really dial in your shooting plan and even work on pacing of shots and timing of camera moves. If you are merely wanting to get the basic flow of your project and to communicate the shooting plan then doing hand sketches will be quicker and more efficient.

What's with the star thing? Was it good, then someone decided to poop in the star rating, and now you want to see how low it can get, lol? Eh, happened to me before ... kind of wish it wasn't there myself as well, as it can be frusterating.

Sooooo, congrats on an already smashingly out of control thread! I felt like a grade school kid flipping through a book only looking for the big pictures (i.e. photoshop magic & comic strips), since it's already at 42 pages, and this is the first I'd seen of it. Good read so far!

Well, I WAS thinking about entering TimeFest, but since my thread could never be as big as your guys', I'm not even going to bother.

Hey Norm,

We'd love to have you come down here! Do it!!! We have a stellar crew assembled so it would be nice for them to get to work with you and vis versa. Hell, it would be a blast, man.

As for the star rating, yeah, some goof voted us down awhile back so we were the only thread not with 5 stars. We thought we'd have fun with it by asking everyone to vote us terrible just to embrace the suck.

So, have at it. We WANT the low rating now. It will be a badge of honor to say our thread has no redeeming value and we'll load it up with pictures of hot chix and crude jokes to match. It's all in good fun.

But seriously, we would really really love to have you come down to join us this time around. Just let us know.

Oh Gee! Somebody must have recognized the true excellence of your thread and thereby rated you a five because I see that you no longer are beating us in the low star derby. So solly cholly. We still suck the most!!!

Um, hey guys, some jackass gave my thread 3 stars. Can you please come over and help knock us down? I will not be able to sleep at night this fest knowing Fat Monster's thread is rated lower than mine.

The Monster was out in force this weekend shooting Glassnote Recording Artists "I HATE KATE" for the first of two singles commissioned by the label. I can't say enough about the crew and especially Tim (who came up with the concept and directed), Matty_g (who was DP) and Luis (Siniarch) who covered so many bases that Tim ended up dubbing him "Super Luis."

Here's some frames from the concept portion of the video shot Saturday (no color correction and reduced in size):

Tim has developed a unique style that centers on interesting characters who perform in somewhat ambiguous and metaphorical settings that require some interpretation by the viewer.

We got to use our first Ritter Fan for wind effects and we also learned that you have to request the camlock cables when you order one AND you have to be sure your generator has camlock connectors. In our case the rental agency said FOUR TIMES it did and it wasn't until we got on set that we found out they lied (they didn't even know what camlock connectors were and had just guessed). Fortunately, we had a master electrician on set and he hard wired our fan to the generator (not a feat for the timid or inexperienced). Here's his amazing wiring job directly to the generator bus:

http://www.archivisuals.com/RitterWires.jpg

We got the fan positioned in front of the band and everybody watched with interest to see what would happen:

All hell broke loose!

The biggest lesson I learned was that when you turn the Ritter Fan off it is best to find an excuse not to be around the set for cleanup:

We've never built a set before, but we decided to go for it in the back of a friend's Glass shop (we were able to pay for the location, but got a great deal through a friend.) It was quite interesting and nerve racking because if it failed the whole video would have been f'd. Building a set is scary because you don't know if it worked until you're done and it's too late.

This was probably the most adversity we've faced on a shoot so far. The generator and fan thing was frickin ridiculous. There are so many ways we got screwed, thank god for people like Luis. Matty did a great job and I think we nailed what we were going for. Unfortunately we're in the midst of editing the last video we shot, along w/ the festival version of Where The Heart Lies. This, along with shooting two more videos this month. We're going to try and get this edited sometime soon.

Also, we were going to try and get an Art Director on board, but decided to handle it ourselves. You'll have to let us know how we did when the vid is done.

Yeah, Larry, Santa Cruz is one of my favorite places too. Bullis and I were down shooting footage for a settlement documentary. We have started doing a lot of these of late. These are typically six to ten minute "sixty-minutes" styled presentations that dramatically presents a particular legal case. The resulting DVD is usually played at a mediation hearing or is delivered to the opposition counsel or insuance carrier as a tool to try and settle a given case. We've found them to be great tools to sharpen our skills because each little documentary requires 1) copy writing; 2) camera work; 3) editing; and usually 4) motion graphics and some score.

Anyway, Bullis and I were shooting a very interesting case involving a lone fisherman run down in the fog by a giant freighter off of Point Reyes. The coast guard mistakenly called the search off and left him alone in the water to freeze to death. Lots of drama and we were able to get transmissions from the coast guard, the freighter and other fishermen as well as poingnant telephone messages the deceased left on his wife's voice mail as well as some friends just hours before the incident.

We spent the night in Capitola and had a wild night down at the Paradise Grill there on the beach. Good times indeed.

Indeed Ted. Alas, my 14 years as a catastrophic injury attorney sort of have given me immunity from taking these cases too closely on an emotional basis. Some pretty intense stuff as you know.

You're just getting started when you get to Carmel. My favorite is to stop at the Highlands Inn for a martini in front of their huge glass window over the cliffs and then drive down to Big Sur.

One of the best road trips I have taken was LA to Seattle on PCH. Just me and an old 35 SLR. Maybe I'll scan a few of the shots in since they aren't digital and post them. Big Sur is incredible.

Hey Ted.
I believe THIS (http://www.digitalcamcordernews.com/2006/05/ringlite-mini-led-light-from-litepanels) is the light we used on camera.
Rented from Vahe (http://hdrentals.up.to/)

The wind got up to 45mph.

Ted Arabian

Thanks Matty. That is an interesting light. Seems like it would make the subject look flat... what was your experience with it?

Pretty decent prices for Vahe. (hey Mark... I see a Taco Cart! )

45 mph... pretty stiff wind from a fan. Pretty damn cool!

Thanks for the info!
