Taking Mark's Fonzi impersonation too literally, Blaine makes the mistake of actually "sittting on it".

1) "I got the sybian working again, hurry up and take your turn!"

2) Blaine unwittingly takes a seat as Mark waits for the cameraman's vote... one more thumbs up and it's atomic wedgie time.

3) "Nothing to worry about... those are just hemmorhoids."

4) "Ten bucks says I can pick you up using only my thumbs and your ears!"....."You're on!"

5) I trade you a Dewar's for a piggyback ride out to the hot tub!

can someone clarify what the monster shack is exactly? is it mark's apartment or house?

Last September when Tim and I founded Fat Monster we looked for live/work space. We found a new apartment complex that is built into a small shopping district out here on the East side of the L.A. basin (in Rancho Cucamonga) that had some unique space. As an experiment they created a series of townhouse apartments that sit over office space that opens onto the shopping center. When you rent one of these units you get retail space that is zoned commercially and also a two story 2-bedroom apartment above the space along with a garage. It is a pretty sweet setup so that we live where we work. Since then we've partnered with Luis who owns a really nice home right in L.A. Luis's place is Monster shack West and ours is Monster shack East.

That's a pretty great set up there. So you both live there full time? I've always been curious about this as well, just never took the time to ask.

Oh my God it's so much more then that... and if I could... I'd smack you for asking "who is luis"...

Luis is a force to be reckoned with... Luis is the guy you hate if he's on the other team and the guy you love if he's on your team.

Kholi said it best when he said that if Luis were only a little taller... and the sun were pulled from it's orbit and crashing to earth... Luis is the one guy who would step up and kick it back in place.

Now I don't know what that means exactly... mainly because I'm PUI (posting under the influence)... but from my observations... I think it means that no matter what happens or what needs to be done... Luis handles it... no, you don't understand... Luis handles it. He is a one man army, and his battalion is a 10 ton grip truck.

I have been fortunate and honored to be admitted and engulfed by FAT MONSTER.
I tried to resist, but when the monster is hungry there is nothing keeping anything from its grasp.

I would like to publicly thank Mark and Tim for allowing me the opportunity to work with them and be a part of such an amazing group. I see nothing but great success for all of us and all of our friends.

Hey Guys, I'm real late in getting to watch films in the fest, and am trying to watch & vote as quickly as I can before the 2nd now.

Soooo, I've just watched this one. It's the 1st "10" that I've handed out, as there was little to nothing wrong I could find to pick it apart. Sure, if I really wanted to quip I could critique a composite here or there, but the story was so great on this that nothing else really matters!

Great performances from the cast, and a helluva story! Loved what you guys did with this. And the music and sound? Wow! It goes without saying that you scored an amazing set as well.

Overall, this is the best work I've seen come out of the Fat Monster camp yet. Very proud of you guys ... excellent growth, and each and every film or project you've put out has only gotten better.

So you can imagine I expect incredible things from that Vienna Teng music video, right?!

Thanks for sharing, and congratulations on a job well done!

When I first glanced at this shot I assumed that Tim was just that excited about mixing maker's mark instead of beam.

This shot is freakin' sick... I hate to point out the obvious, but some people won't notice the poster on the wall that says "monstrous" as Tim mimics it... some people don't notice things like that... such as "the church handles things people don't want to talk about..." "D'oh! Who's composing that shot!?"

dudes and dudettes, we're having a blast right now. i love it here. i don't want to go home.

Dude I'm telling you... this is how cults get started... these guys could start the FM Church. :engel017: Each time I left out there I could hear Don Henley telling me I could check out anytime I liked, but I could never leave.

I've been out to LA a lot of times before... and I never cared about staying before I met the FM circle. The hope for everybody else reading this thread is that it's about people... for everywhere I've been in Cali it comes down to a handful of people that make the whole LA experience mean anything.

I've heard some people had a problem with the Trevor character. I loved his acting. Especially the 'look' in the one scene and then where he falls down. My fav actor in this fest, in fact of all so far. I don't know, just my kind of actor.
Best actor I've seen on dvx yet.

I ordinarily don't express opinions about our own actors, but I agree with you Raptor so I'll say so. I thought adding Todd Lowe was one of the best things we did and I loved his look and his character. Also, the guy was great to work with and happily gave his time for us to get the pickup shot that made the opening scene.

I'm hoping that if I come here and say "congratulations on O2 making the finals" it will be enough to keep up my charade of well-wishing friendship. Really, I'm just in it so that I can get invited to the exclusive Hollywood parties you guys will throw once you make it big in the near future. If your current parties are any indication, it should be epic.

In all seriousness though -- this film is killer, and I couldn't imagine a group of guys more deserving of the success.

You rock Zoidoid. You also are on the list for the good parties now. Why don't you get a flight and come get started next week?

Congratulations fellas! Not a surprise to me that you are in the Top 8 as it was more than well deserved! In fact, if you had not been in the Top 8 I would have thrown my virtual towel in the ring in protest! :D

Also, a big thanks for hosting the L.A. screening! If I am not able to make it I will at least be sitting in a dark room with a case of beer and some techno blasting watching the webcast! :)

It would be nice to get the opinion of those who are not connected to anyone personally in the fest. Non biased.

Unless the audience will just consist solely of DVX members? If so, I see your point and there will be no need.

Just a thought, wouldn't take much. Just a blank ballot with the entry names on them.

Yeah I agree to a point but the problem there is it would become a matter of ballot stuffing if it were open to non members, agreed? Anyways I think being judged by your peers is about as classy as one could hope for. I'm sure the box office numbers will make do in the meantime. :)

You just tend to get a more honest opinion from complete strangers. Not sure why the public would stuff the ballot? They have nothing to gain?

I'm also not talking about a prize here. Most Fest's have a viewers choice award. It's just a recognition award, nothing more.
Once again, just a thought.

If the crowd is mostly filled with DVX Members... no need to bother.
We already have the results for that.

Which are...who?

Many of us are interested in getting favorable responses from industry professionals. Thus, having a panel made up of producers, agents and the like is really important aspect to the developing festival in our mind. Of course, I'm sure many members don't care about making a career of it and only make films for the fun of it.

I don't know who it will be but this is what Jason Ramsey had to say about it:

Panel Voting:
In addition to the 2nd round popular vote, we are simultaneously sending the films off to an independent panel of industry professionals. They will remain anonymous until the fest winners are announced, but you can be proud in knowing that at least one Oscar Winning Producer (Best Film) will be viewing your work.

The panel vote is an ADDITIONAL recognition. The top 3 (as always) is decided by you the members. In addition to that, there will be a Panel award for "Best Film) as chosen by the panel. Again, this is an award that is in addition to the audience voted awards that you may be familiar with.

(A little preface: I've been chatting with Mike lateley so this is a light hearted response. Hey Mike.)

Oh baby, stuff they will. Have you witnessed the human behaviour on You-Tube? Are there really people like that? Yes and no.

But I can see a friend of a fellow filmaker, even if unsolicited, posting 25 votes for the same clip. How do I know? Gulp! Because I did that for a dvxuser during the Heinze fest. And, ha, those were the rules, so I tried to help out the guy.

And yes I still thought he was deserving, but yeah, I helped stuff the ballots.
And what was my material reward? Nothing. Just cause that's the game they called, them were the rules, and they asked us to play. So...that we did.

On a more serious note, congrats Mark & Tim & crew on the top 8.
I hope to watch the web cast if I've not already missed it.

If you have someone sitting at a table by the exit as everyone files out they can take a poll.... problem solved. No ballot stuffing there.

Again, no big deal guys! Just a thought. Not really sure why it's an issue?

As for the panel, I think that's awesome and I'm really looking forward to it.
Still, movies have test screenings for a reason. The public's opinion does matter and this just seems like the perfect opportunity. Why miss it?

Have any of you created a DVD with 5.1 surround sound? Brad Semenoff gave us the six discrete 5.1 tracks and I've been trying to figure out the workflow but the Compressor and DVD Studio Pro manuals haven't been as clear as I'd like. I'm aware compressor has a surround sound module that allows you to assign the tracks to encode an AC3 soundtrack. Does that mean you don't put the 5.1 tracks in the FCP timeline? mark,

click the button in the top left corner of compressor called "add surround sound", from there, assign your separate tracks to the speakers by clicking on them and selecting the respective file off your hard drive. After all tracks are assigned, click ok.

Go down to the setting window, (bottom left) open the formats>audio folder and drag the "dolby digital professional 5.1" setting on to the project you just created, and click submit!

PM me if you need more help!

Hey Mark. Quick word of warning, the files that I gave you don't start with the First Frame of Action, but rather they start before the two pop. I'm pretty sure that they start at 00:59:56:00 on the video timeline. I'm not sure if you can align audio to picture in DVD SP or if you're stuck at that point.

Which is why we prevent vote-begging here. If someone posts a thread saying (effectively) "please, I'd like to steal this election, I don't care if you know me or if my film's awful but please please vote for me anyway so that I can win even if I don't deserve it", then we delete those threads.

Well, suffice it to say that we specifically do NOT want that type of behavior in the DVXFest. We ask the widest possible swath of membership to rate the films for overall quality. Ballot-box-stuffing is dishonest and discouraged and unwelcome here, across the board.

Not really sure why it's an issue?
Again, someday it'd be nice if people would trust us that we DO think this stuff through and there are REASONS why, and we don't necessarily want to go exposing all the reasons. But the main reason this time is that some people are entering re-cut versions of their films for the screening, which means that they might have an unfair advantage over those who aren't recutting their films.

The screening is for people to put their best version forward in front of invited industry guests which will hopefully help them launch careers. Some will have modified their films substantially. Some don't have that opportunity. We don't want to turn this into a second contest, it's a screening, so all judging is done from the original entries and that's it.

The viewers choice we have thus far is a little different since most people here know one another. The public doesn't always agree with the powers that be.
Even they know that, that why test screenings are held in the first place.

It's all good! I'm very happy with the setup. Just wondering... why not poll the audience? No big deal though and I won't beat a dead horse.

Regarding the holocaust of my previous comments concerning the Heinze fest...I'm pointing out what can happen if the rules are set up to allow that.

The reason I responded that way, in that fest, was because that was the game. That's how it was set up and that's how it was played.

Generally I dont even vote at dvx for personal reasons and have not done yet in this fest and probably wont partly due to a conflict of interest so I think I'll just watch.

Well I dunno how this translates into not trusting you. I only asked a question about why they are anonymous. A simple answer like: "They don't want to be known," or "we don't want people to contact them and influence them," or something would have sufficed. I believe the reasons are well thought out, I was just asking what they were.

I guess also I had it in my head that this all-star panel of "producers and studio heads" was going to attend, so I was weighing how worthwhile it would be to put out the expense to attend and represent in person.

Sorry Mark, we just get hit with so many questions from so many folks, many of them playing armchair quarterback, that it's to the point where we want to shout "guys, it's under control, we've thought it through, don't sweat it!" I guess I'm saying the camel's back has lots of straws on it, so if anyone thinks I'm overreacting to any of these questions it's just because there's one too many straws being piled on. :)

I don't believe any of this particular panel have plans on attending the screening event. Their judging is being done the same way you guys did, through the online voting system.

Jason Ramsey

I stopped in to this thread, and read the last few pages, and forgot which thread I was reading.... though I was reading a rules thread :)

Anyways. Mike. I get your point. You just want an informal, no real fest value "polling of the viewers" at the screening. Not an add'l award that carries weight or an add'l prize. That's cool, and I don't see a huge problem with it, but at this point after reading the last couple of pages, I'd rather us all just keep this screening focused on it's primary function. Which is a celebration of you guys and a chance to have your work viewed live by who knows who might be in the audience.

Just a good time, a gathering, and a celebration of hard work put in by the users. Topped off with a little anticipation by announcement of the winners, yes.

Fat Monster is working their butts off, I have no doubt at being the boots on the ground and are handling a lot of the logistics of this event to ensure that it's a fun time for all who are able to attend and as beneficial as possible to those films who are screened there.

Later,
Jason

It's a "family" restaurant by their own marketing where the wait staff is female and wears very short shorts and half t-shirts.

It's sort of for business men that want to ogle women during lunch but don't want to go to a topless bar. They have sports bar food there like hot wings and burgers.

Fat Monster has a regular table there.

Ha ha! I loved that comment Jack and I especially appreciated your compliments Susanne. I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful son. He lives with his mom, who I am still best friends with, and David and I try to spend every weekend together. Now that he's out of school he gets to do some serious time at the monster shack and we love having him.

He wants to be a writer and has held to this for several years. Moreover, his stories are truly imaginative and well written. I'm so pleased that he has a huge interest in both reading and writing.

Here's one of my favorite iPhone pictures from this spring. We visited my folks in Kansas and David wanted to interview his Grandfather about his experience in the war. My dad was a pilot for the Army Air Force and his plane did get shot down and barely made it back to friendly territory. However, David (like a good producer) kept prodding him with stuff like, "Pop Pop, are you sure you didn't have some hand-to-hand combat experiences? Maybe if you think hard you can remember some real exciting stuff!"

I was speaking to my father this weekend about how grateful I am to be here today and have made such good friends in Germany. He said, "maybe if we had the internet back then we all could have gotten to know each other better and avoided that damn war." ... Interesting words to consider.

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to the day that David can become a member here and start making his own films.

For my generation the war is a thing far away in the past and I prefer really to look the life behind me. I hope that your father will have the possibility to make some contacts with german people, particulary in Berlin there are living so many cultures friendly together.

If David has your talent, then he will be for sure a good filmmaker!

Thanks Susanne! My father has, indeed, had the opportunity to meet and make friends with many wonderful people from your fine country. In fact, our little town where I was born in Kansas was settled by German immigrants so that we have a lot of heritage that we are proud of. The biggest event in my home town each year is still called "Fest in dem Park" and its all about German food, beer and music.

Ha ha ha! They had a lot of good stuff but I mainly remember the beer! And when my brother moved to Pittsburgh his good German friends hooked him up with a membership to The Teutonia Männerchor (http://pghmannerchor.com/) where he was immersed in all sorts of German heritage stuff. When I visited him I remember being served some "blood pudding" which I hope to never eat again!

Here´s a photo with the kilt only, cause it was last new jears eve - and I don`t wear lederhosen on that day.
