(and if we don't see at least one Noir film, one Sci-film, and one Action film, I'm gonna ban the next person who clamors for NoirFest or Sci-Fest2 or ActionFest!)

Ironically, my original LoveFest idea hasn't been filmed yet, though we're filming this weekend, and it already involved a time machine.
Barry_Green
02-26-2008, 02:51 PM
Well, if it involves time, you might want to run your idea past Barry_S real quick to see if it meets the fest guidelines, and perhaps that way you could use it as a TimeFest entry.

Not that I was clamoring for Action Fest...but I'm leaning heavily towards an Action Film at the moment. That would be fun to do I think, and it was the first idea that came to my head. (and no time machine)
Maybe I'm jumping the gun and interpreting unwritten rules a little too strictly... but I'm concerned about Time as a 'theme'.
For example, Time Travel stories don't necessarily have a theme of Time, only an element of Time. If a guy travels back in time to kill his mom, then you'd have to purposefully go out of your way to integrate time as a theme.
Ticking-clock film, also not necessarily having Time as a theme.
I think it'd be a lot of fun to make these kinds of films which would produce a lot of variety, but the moment you force time in as a theme requirement rather than as an element requirement, you building a fest around worn adages.
Love as a theme was great, and I completely came down on the side that every short easily address Love as a theme. Love has so many faces, so many cascading effects.
A story about a guy, every thirty seconds we cut to a giant clock, ticking, ticking. He races to find his boy. ticking ticking. Big chase scene, big battle... he finds his boy right before the explosive charge on his chest explodes.
Am I right that it in no way has a theme of "Time"?
Maybe I'm underestimating myself, and everyone else. Maybe I'm nitpicking the rules before they're written, but this is my official petition to have Time declared an Element rather than a Theme.

If anyone thinks this is silly.... might as well get the silly out of the way now before people get too deep into their projects.
Barry, not picking on you, just an example:
Well, if it involves time
This implies Time as an Element rather than Time as a Theme, which is part of my confusion. The rules will certainly clear up what qualifies, but I'm thinking they're saying a Theme of Time, when they are actually looking for an Element of Time.

I think you're stuck on semantics. Clearly the term "theme" would encompass what you're describing as an "element." As long as time factors into the script in some meaningful way I would expect it wouldn't matter whether the rules specify it as an element or a theme. Its been said before that the real purpose of these fests is to encourage people to make good films that are not cookie-cutter copies. The rules have ALWAYS been construed broadly to permit people to make films rather than exclude them. I think the key is whether you, as a filmmaker, sincerely apply yourself to make a film that will fit within the over-arching theme of the festival. Almost any film that has time as a prominent element would qualify -- as would any films that use time as a 'theme'.

the problem I am facing is the fact that what I would want to focus around will probably not be available until after the fest is done.
See how most fest are three months. My "subject" wouldn't be available until June.

I have an idea for a confusing, soap opera looking, epic short film based on the idea of there not being enough time to tell the whole story. (Just kidding and poking fun at myself.)
I think, honestly, my entry will have the following things neatly woven together;
a time machine
the Noir look and feel
action
Flash forward and backward
Make liberal use of profanity and violence
and be a comedy
and have zombies.
