Quick question for those of you using matte boxes and filters. Will a 4x4 filter/MB be ok for the HVX (shooting 16x9 HD) or will a 4x5.65 filter/MB be required?

Yes, though vignetting can be induced if you're using something as thin as a threaded UV or optical flat protection filter.
We recommend 16:9 4x5.65" matteboxes or larger.

I use 4x4 filters in a cheap MattebloxHD and I've had no problems. I find the thin mount provided by Cinetactics is a little cheap, so I use the cokin adapter (http://www.adorama.com/CK82Z.html?searchinfo=cokin%20z%20adapter%2082mm&item_no=3)to mount the matte box.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to shoot with "real" equipment, but this setup gives an incredible bang for the buck. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to escape with a box and filters under $400.

I have a 4x4 matte box that I've used without issue. I needed a matte box, and lucked out to find an older Arri MB-17 4x4 (swing-away) for sale from a rental house for $150. Couldn't pass it up, and have loved it.
I've used it with the HVX stock lens, as well as with my Letus Extreme setup, with PL-mount Zeiss Superspeeds, even as wide as 18mm, with no additional vignetting.
Different matte boxes extend further away from the lens though, and that can introduce the vignette.
