how do i get my dell computer to store video at higher resolution so that when I upload to Vimeo it looks it's best. My Dell captures my videos at the same crappy resolutuon as YouTube :(

Your post is confusing.

What are you trying to do with what footage shot with what and encoded with what at what?

when I download SD footage from my camera onto my computer, it plays back at a low rez, kinda like YouTube rez. I want to capitolize on Vimeo's ability to stream at a higher rez, but if I upload low rez it will still stream on Vimeo at Low Rez.

How do I download from my camera into my computer at the highest possible resolution, which in my case, will be SD (480 lines)

hope that makes more sense :)

It actually doesn't. What exactly are you doing to "download" the footage?

i use an HVX and record in 720P but then I downconvert to DV tapes for extra back up. Then I take these DV tapes and place them into a panasonic GS400 MiniDV camera. Using a fire wire to USB cable I load the footage from the GS400 onto my Dell Laptop using standard "Movie Maker" software.

The footage gets stored and plays back in low rez. Not nearly as clean as even the SD mini DV tapes.

Is there a setting on my computer that will enable my HDD to store at a higher resolution so that when i upload to Vimeo and post on links on this site people can actually watch my footage at a decent resolution?

Does that make sense?

I wouldn't even "capture" the footage. I would hook your HVX up to your computer through USB or firewire, and you can use a program like Edius to edit and output to 1080 lines.

wish i could. but new computer and NLE are next months investment :)

until then, i have a crappy old dell. I havent even been able to view the footage ive been storing on my external HDD's. just hoping its all there when i hook up my new system.

for now i make rough edits using the downconverted dv tapes. i edit on one of those Screenplay machines put out by a company called Applied Magic. Ive owned it for like 8 years. it's a workhorse, but totally outdated and impractical with P2 technology.

What are your capture settings in Movie Maker? There are a lot to choose from. Are you capturing to DV-AVI?

Hey David,
I think you solved my problem. Im running a sample download right now using the DV-AVI setting.

Thanks so much
