View Full Version : Is it Possible to Capture "HDV" from i-link on the EX1?

In trying to answer Corrine's question earlier, I set up a test by recording some footage in SQ 60i mode and enabling i-link on the EX1.

Running Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, I started up the capture module, selected HDV capture and ... 'capture device offline' is about as far as it gets.

The camera is connected to the PC via the same firewire cable that I use to capture from my HVR-V1U.

My understanding is that the EX1 should be in Media Mode and that Premiere would just control it like any HDV deck.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this?

I'm trying to put a backup method in place, just in case I find that none of the current CODEC solutions from Cineform or MainConcept can be made useable in the next few weeks (still numerous glitches with both products at the moment).

Try using OnLocation to capture instead. Or set it to an uncontrollable device or something.

What about capturing live shooting through firewire with OnLocation or DVRack? Will it work?

I can't even open the Options for the device. I think Cineform hosed my Premiere installation. I can no longer capture HDV either.

I sure hope MainConcept gets their act together, because at the moment, it looks like the only option that has a snowball's chance in hell of achieving a workflow efficiency close to that of HDV in Premiere CS3.

The two show stoppers with MainConcept are:

Severe memory leaks, followed by crash of Premiere
No support for AfterEffects. (I could not believe that last one--how is one supposed to work across applications with Bridge if the CODEC is not global?)

Cineform may produce better video if a lot of color grading is being done, but it comes with a heavy rendering and disk space and conversion price. Those five minute films I produced took a 3.5GHz quad core almost 2 hours a piece to render out. The same five minute piece in HDV would render in 3 minutes. That's a difference too great to overlook. Imagine a long form wedding video that goes on for two hours. Sheesh....

In short, I got a nice camera and can edit very short films on a PC. Long form stuff is presently no practical with Cineform (unless you've got days to set aside for rendering) and not practical with MainConcept because of the out of memory errors and inevitable crashes that follow. I can keep it running long enough to export short pieces, but that's all.

My hope is that this all resolves itself before I have to do the first wedding shoot of the season. I've got maybe two months at most to get the editing solution worked out. In the meantime, it's a scary place to be, with expensive camera and no way to edit long form video.
