Hello, guys! I've just got my EX-1 delivered two days ago and was so happy I recieved it. But I just came across following problem... When I shoot in 1080/50 I have some kind of distortion(see the picture below) and it's very upsetting me... In 720/24 mode picture is fine, only in 1080/50 it is distorted. Anyone know why is that? Maybe i do something wrong? Please help...maybe something to do with settings?

Looks like interlacing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlacing) to me.

Wow...
Does that look like that viewing the LCD or monitor during recording?
Did you shoot interlace?

If not, I'd be looking into a replacement camera now.

Yeah, I shot in 1080/50i. I notice it when I view my shot clips on Clip Browser... Sorry, i'm very beginner in videocameras, maybe i just don't understand something? Please explain...

Nasty interlaced. Try switching to 1080 25p progressive mode and report back to us.

Even if he is shooting interlaced, that's really bad. I often shoot interlaced, and it's never looked like that.

If the interlaced image is scaled, even just for screen viewing, this is pretty typical.

Also,
Your image is 724x559 rez.. Very close to SD ratio.
Why did you crop the image to SD?
The EX1 does not shoot SD.

Flip it over and look to see if it has a tag reading PMW-EX1 ;)

Thank you for your replies! I really appreciate it! i bought my EX-1 from Proav.co.uk...just two days ago... 1080 25p progressive looks ok, no such distortion. The other thing i noticed right now is when i play my clips inside the camera(media mode) all the clips look ok. Could it be because of my computer tft monitor(it's not 16:9)? Another screen grab below

The image in being scaled to fit on your screen and it is interlaced.

Shoot some progressive (1080 24p HQ) and I'm sure you wont have the "problem"

Or, export a frame - don't do a screen dump.

There is no 1080 50p on the EX1 (max is 30p), so if you want progressive at that speed, use 720.

I believe the player you are using is not deinterlacing properly. There should be a setting somewhere on the player to specify when and how to deinterlace.

Are these from a stand alone player or your NLE?

No, it's inside Sony Clip browser..

Download the free VideLan http://www.videolan.org/

Under the Video menu item select deinterlace>Blend.
Under video menu item you can also select snapshot for a frame grab.

There's nothing wrong with your camera, you're just looking at an interlaced frame.

Or just shoot in progressive 1080p!
Better image quality
more film-like
no deinterlacing needed

Yes a lot of people think that interlace video is better than progressive video. The interlacers claim that progressive video is not real high definition and that all computer monitors should be 1080i interlace displays. However the thing that is holding back the interlacers from their interlace utopia is that they have not yet figured out how to invent a flat panel cathode ray tube that can display interlace video. Some interlacers even want more interlacing. For a time France had a 809 line triple interlacing scheme that took three 270 line fields to build up a frame. It is very easy to make a progressive scan monitor look like a interlace monitor and that is you just install a set of venetian blinds in front of the monitor to mimmick the NTSC analog legacy of black scan lines that interlace advocates love to see.
