Popping your cherry on LoveFest? Or are you "experienced"?

um...are we talking about filmmaking, or farm animals?

This will be my third fest, once before as exhibition and once in competition, where we took 2nd place.

This will be my third fest as well...

Last fest I placed fifth or sixth... hard to tell. I was mentioned second in a group of 3 after the top 3 vote getters.

Not very experienced though. This will be my 7th or so short film. Counting the few I did with buddies in the beginning.
This will be my fourth real short with actual actors, lighting, etc...

I'm learning as I go and having a blast.
I just wish I had more help. I'm getting tired of Lighting, DP'ing, Directing, and monitoring the sound as I go.
Still, it's probably the best way to learn in the early stages.

Cheers,

Mike

Wow! I can't believe this will be my fourth fest. The third time as the sole producing filmmaker.

Good luck to all of the first timers! (I remember my first time!)

Two previous. First time was like everyone's first time. Confusing and frustrating. Second was better but not much. This time we're trying out a few new tricks. We also used one of those nasty HVX cameras.

First DVX fest, second short that's been lit/mic'd properly, currently working on my first "real" short (actors and whatnot).

I've got a checkered history. My first fest was HorrorFest when I began making Chow Baby (my giant snake movie). I still contend that Chow Baby stands as the model for glorious expectations and ignominious crashing and burning. As a pleasant side note, my nephew who suffered a horrible head injury, which led to our abandoning Chow Baby, has actually recovered enough to return to Denver where he is back at his graduate studies. We honestly thought we had lost him, or that he'd be permanently disabled, so this is a really good year no matter what else happens.

Anyway, Jack Stanley was kind enough to invite me to come shoot Rekindled with him instead. Next we assembled the fabled Threading The Needle crew for Drama Fest and had one of the most amazing times of my life. Ted, Tim, Blaine, Kevin, Kyle, Alex, Brandon and Bullis all came together to try and make a film during an actual air show. Though we failed to soar, we sure learned a lot and that experience was the foundation for what has now become Fat Monster Films.

Tim and I got pretty far along towards submitting an AdFest entry and we shot some bizarre footage pushing Tim on a wheelchair the length of Manhattan Beach pier. The intent was to alter the footage to portray a Viper driving the pier and crashing through the railings at the end to plunge into the ocean. Damn, the footage is cool -- especially the sweeping crane shot I did off the end of the pier. Maybe some day I can finish the effects just to prove they would work.

Then, of course, came the infamous IN EXTREMIS debacle. Damn, that one was going to be cool, too .... except we learned you can't produce an effects-heavy short in three days. We had a ball, though, and I'll never forget shooting the ending with Blaine in our apartment less than two hours before upload deadline!

So, here we are with an entry produced with some organization and preproduction for a change. No matter how it comes out, I can say without question this is the BEST fest for me for the following reasons:

1) Seeing the return of Ted Arabian, my old partner and drinking buddy. Just having Ted back is worth the price of admission, in my opinion.

2) Helping Matty G. shoot his short and getting to be tech assist for The RED. Damn, that camera was amazing and just being able to learn about the work flow in real world practice was worth at least two seminars.

3) Seeing all the new awesome talent springing up. So many lurkers have turned into entrants that it bodes well for the forum and the quality of work presented.

4) Getting to know Bosindy, who is a prince of a man and somebody I hope can come shoot with us soon.

5) Being able to look Jack Stanley in the eye without making lame excuses for why our film missed the boat. This time our film may suck BUT it will suck for the right reasons!!!! no excuses -- just sh*tty filmmaking!

Bless you all for being part of this little community. I'll also renew the standing offer of Fat Monster Films --- you get your butt out here and we'll give you a couch to sleep on. We love entertaining DVXUSERs and we usually have some kind of shoot going on that you can help with when you do come.
