Hi there
I have read a little about a Fujinon HD lens (that is often sold with the HPX500) that breathes. Is the Canon HD lens (the one that is comparable in price to the Fujinon) any better? Any recommendations on what the best choice is here?

No, all those lower-cost lenses breathe madly.

Barry's right, but still, huge bang for the buck.

Most cheap lenses breath, the CAC fujinon and the canon both do. Lens breathing isnt that big of an issue, unless you are shooting drama. I have owned the Fujinon cac 17x HD lens, and I wanst impressed. The build quality is great and the motor unit is extremely nice. But for being an "HD" lens I havent seen any difference with a broadcast SD lens.
So I would recommend an A or J series SD broadcast lens from Fujinon or Canon, (you can buy them used for around the same price as a new cheap HD lens). They will have next to nothing breathing and as far as I am concerned: better optics than these cheap HD lenses.
Just to add: You can get an extreme wide angle with a doubler (the canon J11x4.5b or the Fujinon A10x4.8) for the same price as the Fujinon CAC HD lens with doubler. Think about what kind of shots you want and then make a decision from there.
