i am an american filmmaker working in europe for at least the year and i am going to buy an hvx this month. one of my clients normally asks for basic pal but is now upgrading to 16x9 HD and wants me to deliver the footage that way.
here's where i get confused, having been a strictly dv, dvx100 guy for the last three years,
if I buy an NTSC HVX, and shoot in HD, is there any difference when delivering to a european client??? in other words what is the standard HD specs and don't they supercede pal specs (in terms of frame rate, etc)
if not, are there hacks that you can do with the ntsc hvx in order to come up with pal specs???? or am i screwed and forced to buy the pal version ????
ANY insight on this issue would be MUCH appreciated.
thanks.

In European Area it's better to work in PAL, you can also better convert from PAL to NTSC as from NTSC to PAL.
The European Framerates are 25p/50i. The DVCPRO Codecs are better for NTSC in 720p (1280x720 vs. 960x720) but better for PAL in 1080i/p (1440X1080 vs. 1280x1080)
Sorry for my english.

thanks so much for the info. so its better shooting in 1080 (true hd) in pal????
other questions:
is the conversion from pal to ntsc better on the hvx than other cameras? i've noticed poor quality on conversions done from a pal dvx to ntsc....
also, is there really no way to get a hack that allows pal framerates on the ntsc version?
and finally, what are the specs for pal HD???? 1080i, 16/9 at 25p????
many thanks.

Hey,
The EBU (European Broadcast Union) says that the Standart for HD-Pal in Europe is 720p50.
But ask you Clients what they want. 720p50 (1280x720, 50 Full-frames per second) is the coming Standart but Clients often want to have the highest Resolution so they say 1080i/p.
I havn't heard about a frameratehack that way, the only hack I've heard from is that you can give your PAL-HVX the 24p but without Soundrecording.
Quality of the PAL DVX is higher because of bigger CCD Block.
The only good thing I can say is that the NTSC Version is much cheaper, so If you need NTSC and PAL whats about to Buy two HVX? Or Buy a NTSC one and go for rental the PAL-HVX.
sorry for english ;-)

Or buy a HPX500.
This is a genuine PAL and NTSC Camera, where you can shoot in both TV systems without a hack.
And it's a great camera too.

the hvx500 is about double the price unfortunately. it certainly fits my criteria though. this camera is really needed for one client that will pay us to shoot for a month in pal hd. afterwards, i'll want to keep the camera to work on my own freelance projects, so i think im going with the PAL version to be safe.
That said, has anyone here succesfully taken PAL HVX footage in a variety of formats and downconverted to NTSC. if so, did it come out well???? better than say a normal pal dvx would???
thanks a million. j
