View Full Version : How does one use sunshade with 35mm lens?

I have been looking at Cavision's external sunshade adapter for my Nikon lenses (52mm and 72mm thread) with their matte box. What I was curious about is that since the hood of the lens' thread will be clamp against the sun shade's thread (or adapter ring) and the lens lengths does get longer or shorter when focusing or zooming, how does it work?

Are you saying that you want to use a sunshade adapter AND a mattebox? I think that's what you're saying... If so, the mattebox is really all you need. It serves as a sunshade and a filter stage.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I have a Cavision mattebox and their adapter that fits my EX1 lens thread but for the Nikon lenses, it's quite big for it. So that's why I was looking at this (http://www.cavision.com/lenshoods/LH1015.htm). So you're saying I don't need anything else besides the matte box and it'll work fine with my Nikon lenses? The only thing I am considering this is because the Nikon lenses are much smaller for the 77mm thread that their adapter has so there will be spaces between the adapter and the lens. But then if there isn't any space and the lens is clamp to the adapter ring, how does the lens work when its lengths are shorten or lengthens?

What you need is a rod support system and a rod clamp for your mattebox if it doesn't already have one. That way you simply have to leave enough space in front of the 35mm lense for the mattebox. If you're using a 35mm adapter a rod system is a must in any case. It's much more versatile to mount the mattebox to a rod than it is to thread it through the camera's stock lens.

Yes, already I have a rail system. I just thought the sunshade would elimintate more light coming from the back of the matte box that's all. But since I am having this question and so far I have not heard Cavision anwer my question, it's likely that I will not buy it.
Thanks for the response though.

My bad, I see what you mean now. You may need to consider a mattebox like this one (or the upcoming indiMATTE): http://www.cinevate.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=70
It has foam inserts for the back which are interchangeable and allow you to make a light-tight seal against any lens. I am pretty sure that there is a problem with some of these matteboxes with the EX-1 though, because of the microphone mount... But that is based purely on memory of this website. I have never even held an EX-1.

Well, I already own a Cavision matte box. I'm just looking for an addition to what I have.

Although i haven't experienced this with an adapter, previously when shooting 16mm, the matt box doesn't always cut it. often you do need an extended "roof"/flag clamped over the top of the matt box, as in the sun particularly, sometimes the glare cannot be cuttout by the camera's mattbox alone.
On that note, some adapter users may be eager to purchase a mattbox for the 'wrong' reasons. If you just want a mattbox to stop lens flare, and NOT to actually use the mattboxes filter cartridges (as with your 35mm lens/camera you already have filters/nd), a cheaper (and sometimes more effective method) is to use flags. Just clamp bits of low-reflective painted boards where glare is an issue - either on or off the camera, or both. that way also, if positioned correctly off camera, you can create a larger "safe" distance to allow for camera movement (be choreographed or freestyle) which may 'step over' the matt box safe lines. just a suggestion :)

Very true. I should have said a mattebox with a french flag,

Then make an adapter ring for it - it's a simple plastic donut painted black. The OD is a little larger than the hole already in the matte box. THe ID is a little larger than the lens.
I made one for my cavision. Works great.

Okay, I just found out that a sunshade is not what I wanted. But the question is, how do I use a mattebox in front of my Nikon that the adatper ring is 77mm and the Nikons leses are in the 52mm to 72mm? Do I want to keep the space difference since the Nikon lens turns and/or lengthens or shortens as I focus?

There is a company called Geardear who make very cheap but pretty nice matteboxes. They are simple CNC cut styrene board, but that makes them very light and cheap. The good thing about the geardear design is it is actually a matteBOX. It has a large enclosed box that is at the front of the lens, and it has a foam ring that seals with the lens and stops any light getting through the back.
They also look ultrasexy

The thing is, I already have a Cavision mattebox purchased. So I'm looking for an add-on to that so that it works with all my Nikon lenses.
