JANUARY 17th... Ted announces his return...
Hola amigos!
It has been so long since I have been able to visit this site and my fellow filmmaking friends. I apologize for my absence but duty called… and I had to answer!
I have had the busiest season that I have ever had… thanks in large part to the NH Primaries. I used to hate the primary season but not this time around. I was constantly employed by the Clinton and the Obama campaigns and lit them up whenever and where ever they were in NH.
The final four days before the actual primaries, I lit 14 events! It was amazing. I had 3 lighting set-ups in a box truck and ran all over the state setting up the rallies. I had 2 assistants who would each baby-sit a rally, breakdown the set-ups and meet me somewhere along my travel to return the gear so I could set it up again. It was crazy and I heavily relied on an information-filled notepad that never left my side. It was quite a rush and I was averaging about 3 hours a sleep.
The day before the Primaries, I actually lit 6 events! In one day! 3 Obamas, 2 Bill Clintons and 1 Huckabee. (Yeah, I picked up a Republican along the way!)
It was exhausting at times but the money made it totally worthwhile. I will miss my “Obama-bucks” and my “Clinton-cash!”
In addition to lighting the Political gigs, I had been busy with designing, stage managing and technical directing Nutcracker and several Holiday Pops concerts.
And on top of all of this, I have accepted the position of Technical Director at Brewster Academy. During the Fall, I designed and installed an incredible set for a play called “Metamorphoses.” The set was a 16’x16’ pool of water on stage. It was only 18” deep but still a lot of water and weight! And the best part came when I started to do the lighting. WOW! I never had so much fun bouncing light off of water. It was really incredible. (I shot footage of the production and will share a clip soon.)
And just this week a played a caveman for a History Channel special that will air this March... Journey to 10,000 BC. (It is produced and directed by David Padrush who has also shot Bible Battles, Aftershock and 300 for the History Channel. He is a great guy and I always say YES! to his projects.) The shoot was totally shot on a Green Screen studio at High Output studios in Boston, MA. Another amazing experience.
So… that what’s kept me busy.
I would have loved to just pop into dvxuser and say hello but it was just better for me to stay focused on my tasks.
I have totally missed being a part of this dvxuser community and deeply miss taking part in the film fests. I thought that I might try to shoot something for the All Hallows Eve fest but didn’t have a script or story idea that I felt could be worthily shot and submitted. And I didn’t want to just submit to be a part of it all. The worst part of it all was that I never even had a chance to watch any of the films. I hope to do that soon. I know that a lot of work was put in and I would like to see what you guys did.
Now we are on to Love Fest.
I am done with the Political scene and I have my February set already up at Brewster (West Side Story for those who care). So… I am thinking that I can contribute to Love Fest!!!
I have written a simple story idea and am working on securing a theatre which is empty and dark (meaning they have no shows happening). They owe me money and I am going to barter some of their bill in exchange for the use of the space.
I intend to build a single unit set and shoot in a completely controlled environment. (I have come to loath the sun and its constant movement! Then you have clouds that don’t stay where you want them.) I really hope that I get this space. It will be a great new learning experience for me.
The goal of Love Fest for me will be to shoot in a totally controlled environment focusing on very extreme and dynamic lighting. I am staying very, VERY simple on story. (I always try to put too much in these short films.)
I am also aiming to add another new element for me… the dolly shot.
The film is titled, “Love.” (Love in quotation marks… basically, Quote/unquote Love)
I hope to get this done in time and learn some new skills while honing other techniques. I also look forward to watching and learning from you guys.
Best of luck to everyone on their projects!
One final note….
I really want to say thank you to those who have reached out to see how I was doing and wishing me happy holidays and such. It was so comforting to know that my presence has been missed. Believe me, I have missed you guys!

Rehearsal Grabs!!!
Had a great rehearsal with actors and crew. Allegra English (a dear friend and the "unfeatured extra who POUNDED on the basement door for I.D.) is the Boom Op (a first for her!) and the bts photographer!!!
Obviously, lighting is underway. I have enhanced the lighting since rehearsal, now that I've seen the actors on the set.

Ted looking sharp in his Cow Hampshire attire! Love the flannel lined pants, huh?
OH! And that hideous looking canopy pointy thing above the bed is CROPPED OUT of every shot. Believe me!!! I hate the way that top looks but I found it at the Salvation Army for $3.99!!! How could I NOT use it!!!! It's perfect!
My actors are Kelli Leigh-Ann Connors and Anthony Ejarque.

Ted's montage of METAMORPHOSES grabs...
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/20191/1201026787.jpg
The really cool thing about this set, besides the water on stage, is that the entire action takes place on this single unit set. However, with the lighting, I was able to transform the set over and over.
Also, though it does not come through in photos... this set had a built-in fountain that allowed water to tricker into the pool and was rigged with an overhead fountain that allowed it to rain from above. All in all, very cool!
I hope that you enjoy checking out the photos.

Congrats on that marvelous new gig, Ted!!! Was the play the one by Ovid I had to read in college or Kafka's?
So friggin' fabulous to see the theater guy back here and even more wonderful to read of your accomplishments and successes. ... The LADDER is back!

Now, THIS is what I have been missing! (and why I stayed away!!!) I love chatting with the boys!
Thanks Mark. Appreciate the welcome!
Kyser, I have several dolly shots planned... hopefully one will satisfy you!
MARK!!!! Buddy!!!!! Thanks man! Yeah... the theatre guy is back to being a film guy again!
Metamorphoses was writted by Mary Zimmerman based on the story by Ovid. (good call, man!) The original play debuted in NYC at Circle in the Square. It is really an amazing piece of work. I was so proud of my set. I gotta get a grab of that up.
Hmmmm..... yeah, I have to find a way to use a ladder in this shoot. I am sure that I will find a way!
Thanks boyz!

The other day we were on the way back from location walkthroughs and we passed an "IN N OUT" and Tim goes, "TED!" and everybody got it.
When I was out in Nebraska Kyle told me he called you on a whim and he gave me a report that you were doing spectacular and that was so great to hear. Now its even better to get the rundown from the source and hear about this stuff. Cannot wait to see those Metamorphoses shots. So many people are interested in lighting here and it would be really cool to see your setups.
Welcome back and give my fondest remembrances to Diane.

Though I am JUST getting my project going, I do intend to have it submitted in time for the fest. Looking forward to the experience and the always helpful feedback.
I imagine that you have been busy as usual. Is that a new studio name for yourself? Coram Deo Studios? Or are you working with a new team?

Oh man, I would LOVE an IN-N-OUT double-double animal style right now!!! hee hee!
Thanks for the kind words to Di... I'll be sure to pass them on.
As for lighting Metamorphoses... man, it was unbelievable!
First of all, I had to hang and focus all of my lighting over the pool before the pool ever went in. (The lights there are dead hung and I would have no way of getting to the positions without risking a tear in the pool liner.)
But the best part was when I had my pool in and I turned on my first light to focus it... WOW! The light hit the water and reflections went EVERYWHERE! It produced that "crinkled water reflection look" that you see at indoor pools. I was at first shocked on how I was going to control this lighting but then quickly learned to use it to my advantage.
And the best use of reflecting light was for the Gods. I had these Gods high on a platform and really didn't have any good lighting positions to hit them. I finally got the idea to hang some lighting a the rear of the theatre and bounce the light off of the water and aimed at the Gods. OMG! It was so cool! The Gods were up in the heavens and lit by this constantly moving reflecting light. I was pretty stoked.
Okay... now I gotta get off line and go through some footy for you guys.

Coram Deo is a new name for the company I've been working for, and with for several years. We finally incorporated to become "official" We're working on our first feature right now, and are shooting in March! :D

Metamorphoses was put on at our university last year! It was a phenomenal production and, yep, we had a big pool of water!! --> It was very very shallow but made a huge impact... you just dont see water on stage very often. cool cool cool -- would love to see how you lit it.
anyway, GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK, TED MAN!!! Mark and I were talking about you when he came to stay and I was SO glad I was able to reach you so late on New Years Eve. It really made my year, man, and I can't say how great it was to hear from you!!

Well, good news! I just received my Bebob Foxi!!! (remote follow focus unit)
I ordered it the other day from a distributor who had a price that was $90 lower than the lowest price I have ever seen! The site also was a bit sketchy because they do not have an online shopping basket!
I called them and was told that they have been working for 2 years to get an online shopping cart system up. GULP! I was thinking, how hard can this be??? My wife, a school teacher, has over the last couple of years started making jewelry and selling it on the internet... on a website that she built herself using actual code! Come on! How can any business claim to not have a shopping option up if they really wanted it???
But, stupid and ignorant as I am.... I ordered the Foxi with fingers crossed. (yep... I am a risk-taker. Especially when it comes to saving $90!!!)
It arrived today and it works beautifully!!! I am so excited!!!
Now, I can take further advantage of my crane BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I can execute these dolly shots that I have planned!!!
Woo Hoo!!!

Sure, I'd rather have it all but since I can't, this way is working for me!
I used to do that a few years ago when our band was frequently gigging around town and the state. For every show, I would use a little bit of the money from the previous gig and buy a new cymbal, or stand, or head... it was an efficient way to build up my kit into the behemoth it has become... AND it provided for some serious motivation to play.
Props, man! -- But I will also urge that you get an HVX!!! You won't regret the purchase, man. I'm telling you. My dad and I are looking into co-financing one for ourselves so we don't need to keep borrowing Alex's.
Remote focus! COOL!!!!

Yeah, yeah.... I keep thinking about the HVX.
Jim Demo has offered to bring his up for my shoot. I am seriously considering it but he has warned me that I may encounter workflow problems (being that I am a mac user).

Okay, okay.... I promised a story synopsis but I am having a bit of trouble writing it without giving it away. SO... I just put together a photo montage from the play I designed a couple months ago.
I have put together a video of it but it is 5 minutes long and I am sure that those who may be interested in checking out my set and lights would be just as happy glancing though the photos. (even though the video really shows off the lighting much better with the constant movement of water.)
Post #2 you will find the photos... or just click on the "Metamorphoses" button on my signature.

And I am hoping that I can steal you from that Boston set for a day to shoot up here in NH. I have a nice project that I think that you would really get into.... I am intending to shoot with a very dynamic and saturated light plot! Right up your alley, bro!
Looking forward to seeing you.

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!
Just made another purchase!!!!
Soon, I'll have a low-budget, high-rez solution to my field monitor woes!
I'll be letting you all know my outcome of this sweet find!

btw, gotta send out some love to fellow dvxuser 24fps4ever. He had the monitor I wanted for sale in the marketplace and we were able to make a deal. He has been a straight-up dude, replied quickly and is working to make this deal work for me. I really appreciate this dvxuser family! What a great place this is!!!

Thanks B-Man!
It may look trippy but it really wasn't "weird trippy." The captured images may give you the wrong idea about the play, LOL. I guess it may look like something out of the 60's or something but it was more like the Ancient Grecian Times, for sure!
Thanks for viewing.

The video is pretty cool. I did put together something but it is 5 minutes long! I need to keep editing it down. The video really shows off the water effect so nicely! Especially the lighting. And the rain sequence just can't be captured on stills.

hee hee.... I plan to use a magneto dolly device for Aram. It's perfect! The dolly rolls along the ladder rails and has a large magnet attached to it.... then Aram, with his "special" hips is going to walk around and the dolly will follow. It's a touch-free system! I am so excited about it!!!

I whipped that together from a picture of a rose that I took while in Portland, OR at the Int'l Rose Gardens. I thought that it was the perfect color for this festival banner. As you say... very Valentine-y!
And yeah... that blue has a neat effect on it as well.

PRODUCTION NOTE..............
Set build begins today!
Friggin' cool, Ted. I am envious of your talent and experience with building practical sets. I hope you can show us some pix of construction in process at some point. Building on the Rochester Opera House Stage is so cool. Will you be using their in-house lighting capabilities or will you light this strictly with your own kit?
Ted Arabian
01-26-2008, 03:05 PM
Ahhhhh, shucks! Thanks Mark.
Well, I have returned from my day at the ROH (Rochester Opera House) and got quite a bit done. Not as much as I'd like that have but I did have to do a lot of figuring out and planning on how to use the space to my best advantage.
And yes, Mark. I am using the in-house lighting system. I am SO excited by this as I won't have c-stands all over the place! Everything (or most everything at least) will be hanging in the air. Should make for quick set-ups between shots.... not having to move lights and stands.
I did take some photos. I will post some as soon as I can.
Right now, I have to go jump in the shower and head off to perform. (why do I agree to do these Musical Murder Mysteries???)
Okay.... Photos to come.
Thanks!

Yeah, and I do????
haha!!!! I PRAY that I can do this correctly! I so acclimated to lighting for the stage... how to use this system for film is going to be a first for me! It's like I told my wife, if I was lighting a theatre production, I wouldn't be worried. BUT with this being something of a first, I am VERY NERVOUS about it.
Not to mention that I am pretty darn nervous about THIS shoot in particular! NOW THIS IS A FIRST!

Well, had another day in the theatre. Set is almost done. I have photos but not on my computer yet. I'll get them up tomorrow morning. Beat dead tired right now.
I almost had to bail this fest as the Hillary campaign tried to hire me to do Massachusetts. Thankfully, they opted for a lighting vendor down there. I would have loved the money but I was bumming that my film was going to have to be halted! (don't worry Jim, I will not accept work during the dates I have promised you. I would only do this to my own dates... BUT, it is a non-issue and filming should go as scheduled on Thursday!)
Okay, tired and hungry. Talk to you all tomorrow with new photos. There are some photos 2 posts up if you haven't seen them.

Hey Will. Nice grab on your thread.
Gotta tell you that I keep hearing about how hungry the HVX is for light... makes me a bit apprehensive to get one. I love how the DVX handles low light.
As for the lighting on my set, I am going to be working on that today. Yesterday, I pretty much got the set how I wanted it. It was fun yet challenging to do.... being able to move the doors where ever I wanted was both a blessing and a curse.
I kept my camera on sticks during the entire build process.... framing the shots and moving the doors to where I wanted them. I'd move the doors a foot left. I'd move the doors a foot right. I'd move the doors out farther. Like I said... both a blessing and a curse to have the options. BUT I am not complaining!!!
I have to get the pix off my camera, crop them and then I will post shortly.
Back in a few!

Here is some of the lighting enhancements that I add since rehearsal.
I lit the doors. I have the electric trimmed to about 9 feet and shoot the light through the panels. The filtered light flows through the room, crossing the bed making for a beautiful face light.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/20191/1201682396.jpg
I did the same here with the beaded door into the bathroom. Stunning when the beads sway! Makes lovely images across the set. This two is focused to cross the bed. (love the "spray" of light that shoots across the floor.
btw, this pictures DO NOT justify how nice this really looks. These photos were taken quickly with my Nikon, no tripod, quick shots look directly in to the light source. I'll take some full set photos with lighting later and post them. Regardless... i am loving this lighting!
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/20191/1201682654.jpg
And here is another of the blinds but with no front fill light at all. Simply the back lighting on the blinds. THIS LIGHTING IS FABO for silhouette shots! (I have a couple of those planned!)
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/20191/1201682222.jpg
Anyway.... there's some updates for "Love"

I am interested in seeing what you do with a what appears to be more of a "theatrical" set than a "film" set. I was wondering if the choices you made were driven by location, story, or the desire to experiment.

Ted,
I was out of the shop all day today and just got back. Your images absolutely popped out of the screen. So much brilliant color. Can you shoot some upwards so we can see how you're leveraging the house lighting scaffolds?
Also, what camera are you shooting on? I'm assuming these production stills are from that really nice Nikon you have, right? I'm interested to see how this set performs as imaged by your shooting camera.
I also echo what others have said as to this wonderful stylized look you are getting by approaching this from scratch and using the house system. Man, you must have some serious wattage at your disposal, huh? Can you give us more details? What, if any, lights are you bringing in to supplment?
You have amped up this fest immensely with this late entry. It's even better to see how quickly and efficiently you are putting this together. Bravo, dude!

Hey Guys! JUST WRAPPED... for the day. My actors who were initially unavailable for tomorrow are suddenly AVAILABLE!!! So instead of rushing through everything, I set aside some shots for tomorrow. (thankfully Jim, whom I am shooting with tomorrow! was kind enough to allow me to come down a couple of hours late. Thanks Jim!!!)
Wow! What BEAUTIFUL shots I got today! I may not have a film but I got some nice footage! LOL! Hopefully there will be a film... We'll see!
Mark, thank you for the very kind words. And thank you Marlon for echoing them. I am really glad that I was able to participate in this fest. It is so good to be back on the boards with my filmmaking friends!
As for lighting....
I am using....
4 - 675 watt Source 4 pars shooting at the blinds (from behind), obviously with a heavy pink/purple gel. (R48 doubled up)
5 - 675 watt Source 4 pars shooting straight down with a deep blue (R79)
4 - 1K watt Altman pars shooting a back light on the acting area, primary blue (R80)
4 - 675 watt Source 4 lekos shooting on the bed and loveseat. A warm Honey color (R11) to simulate candle glow
1 - 675 watt Altman leko with gobo shooting on the bed scrim. (again R11)
2 - 675 watt Altman lekos shooting behind the doors (R11 and diffusion)
1 - 675 watt Altman leko shooting through the beaded door. (R11 and diffusion)
and
2 - 675 watt Source 4 lekos shooting an uplight in the drapery corner of the love seat area
That's it. That is my lighting plot.
I did learn a few things today about shooting with a theatrical style lighting plot... down light, though wonderful, makes it difficult for a boom op to NOT CREATE SHADOW!!! OMG, I had to be so specific about where the boom went. Master shots...??? Forget about it! YIKES!
There was one other thing that I learned that I said to myself, "Ted... gotta remember that when shooting on a theatre set." But I can't remember it yet! I'll post it when I remember it!
The most REMARKABLE thing that happened was this....
Get this,
It is 10:30am something. Cast and crew arrived as 8:30am. I was there at 4am and built a partial fourth wall (for reverses), finalized the set dressing, built my camera rig (that's another story for another post!) and cleaned the stage.......
We have camera rig in place, actors "costumed" and ready, crew ready (good crew! 3... boom op and 2 ACs... all new to this! GREAT CREW!) ready to lite a bizzion candles.... WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS!!!!
I plopped where I stood, (thankfully right in front of the Love seat!) with the dumbest, most numbness expression on my face and stared with mouth open.
The crew all looked about. The actors emerge form the green room. "That's not from the incense burning is it?" many of them ask.
"No, I said. Couldn't be. Those stopped burning 15 minutes ago (when i thought that we were ready to shoot!!!)."
Anthony, Our Lead Male and runs the joint, goes to investigate.
I sit, still vacant. I cannot believe this. "I've reached the moment where I am about to roll the very first footage of the film, after spending countless hours in the last 5 days building this set, and it comes to this? THIS?????????? You've got to be kidding me!
Thankfully, they were only testing the system downstairs. (the ROH is upstairs of City Hall. You boys out west probably never seen one of them. They date back quite awhile! They're old New England-y, large city hall with a theatre built in above. Really making for an interesting shoot.... you'll understand AFTER you see my film!!!)
Anyway.... the candles were lit and incense burned and we shot, shot, shot! WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (when I was sitting there on that love seat... I was writing out my DVXUSER post explaining WHY I didn't have a film to deliver!!! haa haa....... OMG.)
Mark, I will take a picture overhead to give you an idea of my lighting plot. The pipes (called electrics in theatre) are raised and lower at the fly loft. This house still uses the old hemp system and require many sandbags to weight the electrics.
I cannot wait to get home and offload this footage. Screen grabs tonight!!!
Thanks again!

Dang, sorry that crap with the fire alarm happened. But doesn't something always just go wrong at the worst time like that on the set?? People don't understand sometimes just how hard it is to get films made with the the pre-production, production and post-production. There are so many things that can go wrong during each particular process - but that's why we are who we are and we do what we do. We're filmmakers damnit! And we kick A$$!
Oh, by the way, what's the lady waiting on - cz I can tell you what it looks like to me.

Ted, as not a set designer and builder of one set, I found it to be as much fun as the rest of the process of making our film. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to have the power and resources of say Mr. Scott. I mean, he built a forest in a building. We had a blast with the whole set thing too.

ted, i'm really curious about the content of this one. you haven't drop any hints as to the story have you? or did i miss it?
Ted Arabian
02-04-2008, 03:27 PM
No... have not given any hints of the story line! Let's just say that this short film is a cross between Harlequin Romance and The Red Shoes Diary!
Thanks all for checking in and commenting!
Today I had a Hillary event to light and she was very, very late. I was delighted that I brought my laptop and harddrive... I got a lot of editing down today!
I see a lot of things that I wish that I could re-shoot. I guess we always do. But in my case, having the responsibilities of directing, DPing, lighting and monitoring sound... I failed to do all four jobs effectively.
There are some things that I can fix... with ADR and cropping.
There are some things that I cannot fix. These things will be in the film but certainly not on a demo reel!
The film is coming out as I imagined, if not better! I cannot believe the performances I got from my actors! GREAT JOB!
I keep trying to find a one sentence synopsis... I am getting close!
Thanks again for the comments! I like getting feedback, criticism and compliments.

I admit it... I went bad.
I will say, I have never been more nervous for a shoot. I loved the story when I wrote it. I described to my actors what I envisioned. But then came the days before the shoot that I realized what I was asking... of two of my long-time friends and fellow actors.
However, the days of the shoot. All gone. No fear. Too many jobs to perform and the tightest shoot window you may have ever heard of!!!
I kept a very private and professional set and the day was work. It was so funny when I downloaded the footage. I was going like, "this is hot!" "OMG... can I actually put this on dvxuser???" And I thought, Yes! because it is tastefully and beautifully shot.... hot.
It was then that I realized how focused I was while shooting because this footage should distract a man... but the only sex that was on my mind was framing and shooting!
Okay... really rambled there, didn't I? LOL.

I completely understand you on this. When we shot the bedroom scene in The Company of Memories, we kept it extremely professional. I was behind the camera the whole time and I have no idea what our actress looks like undressed and she was the entire time. I guess this is the difference between filmmaker and creepy guy with a camera.

Hey Marlon! That is the one and only Kelli Leigh-Ann Connors! She gave me SUCH A FINE performance. Unreal. Her commitment to the role was mind boggling. She was fantastic.
UNFORTUNATELY, you will not see this scene or many of the other phenomenal footage that I had intended. Not in this cut.
I never thought that my simple, four page script would have me running up a time barrier... but I was. I had to cut so much. So much LOVE left on the floor!
I know that the Director's Cut will be an instant favorite!!!
Thanks for the comments. I'll tell your supa' sexy gf that you said, "hi!" :)
