View Full Version : G35 HD Sample Discussion

Ok... No one is talking about this yet, so I'll get the ball rolling.
I just watched Jonathan's HD G35 sample clip (running man).
I have to say, I'm genuinely impressed. A few things though...
What I would like to see:
- Less compressed clip. The running man clip is like 2 /12 minutes of 720p footage, compressed to a little over 600 MB. I would love see a less compressed shorter duration clip.
- 1080p please :)
- Uncompressed frame grabs of res charts.
One thing that I sorta caught, but I can't be totally sure of though is some softness in the images corners. Again, I thought I saw some corner edge sharpness issues, but I can't be sure till I see a properly shot res chart.
As for the big grain issue... as of right now I don't think it will be an issue. It's hard for me to tell if I'm seeing compression artifacts or grain, but it certainly wasn't anything leaping into my face like other static adapters show in HD. I'm leaning towards compression simply because its a subtle changing pattern.
Again, Congrats on the adapter! I'm already thinking I might buy one for my Andromeda (imagine what a killer/exotic system that will be).
RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS! This file is BIG! 600 MB, don't even bother trying to stream this one....
ATTENTION!
I'm pulling my link ("Nuzzaco Mirror") down at MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, EST TIME.
I called up my hosting company, I'll get billed $2.99 for every GB I go over my limit... this is a 600 MB file so... Just to be safe, I'm pulling my link down. I'll stay up late and wait for todays bandwidth report to come in (around 3 am EST is when it refreshes), if I'm doing fine, I'll put the link back up for a little while longer.
Thanks for understanding!

Actually, I reread his email and it says:
"you are welcome to host it on a mirror if you would like. That would be great actually."
I ASSUME that means you can post a link to it once you upload it.
But we should probably wait to hear from him directly.

Yes, guys I know... but I thought I'd post my thoughts anyways. He never said anything about being able to post a link on a public forum, and so far he's only emailed the link... I'm just being careful and respectful.
What did you think of the footage Luis?

That way once you get permission you can post a link.

I have seen the video this afternoon and I have say it's pretty awesome. There's parts where it's hard to tell but you can see some grain, but it definitely doesn't look like static grain from the adapter...it looks more like video grain. I'd like to see some more HD footage...1080 this time :D

If I didn't already buy my SGPro, I'd be all over this. I love the design and the fact that it covers the focus ring so you don't need to gaff it or build a device to keep your focus locked in.
I wish they would have sent out an email a few months ago letting all of the preorder people know that the G35 was nearing completion, because I probably would have waited for it. That said, I'm stoked on my SGPro! If anyone wants a preorder code, I'm happy to give it away. *EDIT* and Jared asked first so he got it.

Just finished watching it.
I have to say - I'm very impressed.
No signs of vignetting that I can see.
No visable grain (to my eye anyhow).
Impressive.

Hey all it's Jonathan Here. HD compression is a skill I'm still learning. :) Most of that noise you see is plain old starved HVX sensor. The shoot was late in the day 4:00ish and there was a thick cloud layer as we were on the verge of a snow storm. There might have even been +3db of gain (carousel) added (insert Gasp here) So it was pretty much the darkest exterior I have ever shot. Also, most of the footage was shot at 1/120th ie 60p to display that ability. I'm waiting for it to stop raining/snowing shoot some high speed 1/250 and 1/500 running action stuff to further show how fun that can be with a static adapter (no moving screen = no grain at high shutter speeds) And of course you will ask the question I cannot pull directly from my brain which is what is the Z level on the HVX. I'm not a fan of shooting from the hip when it comes to specs like this... but I will say it's in the 50's. Z56 maybe? I don't have a definitive number mainly because this demo was shot without a 24x36mm mask so I remember not taking a firm note of that. Either way the zoom is pretty close to the 24x36mm frame. All the lenses were at 2.8 and the only lens that has a bit of optical vignetting was the 14mm (ecu of foot running in frame). I ran some film and DSLR tests with the 14mm to see if it made a difference and it still had vignetting regardless. Kind of hard with a 14mm corrected lens, even at a $1400.
Anyone is welcome to host it on their server no problem. Enjoy and hit me up on email if you have any questions. Please check out our FAQ page on our website (I know it's kind of a lame FAQ) but we are working on it ;)
I'm cutting together some 1080 24P footage that I shot on my A1 that I will post as soon as I get a rough of it. Keep posted. Thanks!

Thanks for the info, Houser. Reason I ask about the zoom was because on just about every camera (DSLR or not, as you've seen) the widest lenses will probably show some edge softness/vignetting. When it was mentioned that there was none, that piqued my interest as far as how far the Camera's zoomed in when utilizing the unit.
As with the Letus, I'm sure you can also correct that vignetting with the G35 by zooming in a tad bit. The FOV you lose (to me) doesn't seem to be great enough to be concerned about, perhaps an easier solution to swallow over being upset about soft edges and having to crop in post.
Looking forward to seein the clip with mine own eyes.

Mirror link to my server is back up.
Link on the front page.
Jason Ramsey has also offered up his server as a mirror - and I'm uploading the clip there right now. That upload won't be done for another 3 hours or so.

Ah, Luis, what a great samaritan and a scholar. If there's ever a dvx contest for best avatar you can be sure you'll have my vote. Scooby snack?

those still images look really nice, but i could swear that there is a SLIGHT hot spotting going on as the center genereally looks brighter than the edges?

Really? I've watched it so many times and I didn't see anything there. It is indeed beautiful footage DPed by our very own Jonathan Houser. He told me that he would be cutting some Xh-A1 next week so I'm guessing we might be seeing some 1080 24 soon. Now THAT I'm really looking forward to seeing. I'm also curious about some low light tests. I remember when I had the first letus35 (it was not even letus35A) it lost 1,5 and it was not that bad...unless you were hoping to shoot by candle light.

Hey guys... had to cancel the download last night due to timeframe, and I'm on location today, but I'll try and DL it again tonight and add a mirror.
Arggg... I really want to see the footage. But the screengrabs definitely helped ;)

Hi All,
I will have up the HOWLOW HD footage on my own server in about 2 hours. I will also have a torrent being tracked and seeded from the same location.
I will follow up with a post of the links as soon as the upload is finished.
Download as many times as you want, there is no limit.

My pleasure, and I agree.... those grabs are hot... WAIT!!! NOT LIKE THAT!!! hahahaahhaa... too bad it wasn't a Running Woman, heheh... :)
About the hot spot, I didn't really see that, at all... it might just be the particular grabs?
EDIT: I looked at the grabs and I can see how the composition of those frames can make you feel that but look at the last one closely, especially the left side and you'll see that it is as uniform as it could be

My server is up with the HowLow footage if there is anyone who still has not downloaded it. There is also a torrent link so people can seed/leech at their will.

I will probably pull the link from my site later tonight then.
Hopefully my bandwidth didn't go through the roof with this.

Okay, maybe this has been asked elsewhere but do we know how much the G35 is going to be and if it's going to hit the market for real soon?

Thanks.
BTW Jonathan, this is a really cool video...I love the actor you used. He has a great face. The music and pace of the editing works very well.
Nice job.
Oh, and were you using just plain old Nikons for this?
