View Full Version : Slating for Slo-Mo Video

Hello,
I am sure this has been discussed here before. I am shooting a video on the HVX200 that will be shot at 48FPS, with the singer singing the song at 200% - nothing new. Then when played back, the singer will be in slo-motion, but his lips will be in sync with the song. How would I slate for this so that the editor can have the easiest time syncing the lips to the song? They will be playing the music over a juke box, and we will not have the convenience of any external time-code generators.
Thanks

The editor will probably just have to wing it. If you wanted you could use a slate in each shot and record scratch audio, sync it, and then have a reference, but that's probably more work than it's worth.
If you do long takes, you can minimize the amount of work needed.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm shooting slo-mo, so I don't think I can record scratch tracks in camera -- unless you had something else in mind?

I meant with external sound, if you had it, which is why it would probably be too much work to be worth it. Synching shouldn't be too tough to eyeball anyway.

Makes sense. Thanks for the feedback.

Just indicate tape speed.
Any decent editor can work with that although it would be real helpful if you had some form of smart slate if not a smart slate itself. Check this out:

He could just setup a separate timeline with the slomo take(s) synced to the track and then grab pieces from there for the main working timeline.

You can make a video "cue track" that has the song/music, and a large TC readout (and a "slate" flash of white if you like) and burn it to DVD at the various playback speeds.
Then use this on a portable DVD player as your music playback device (throguh ext. speakers of course), and use the player's own screen to actually "slate" each take to the camera.
Just make sure it doesn't skip when you pull it out of frame. :)
Bonus: If shooting off-speed, slating both ends of each take can help keep sync - but not sure how well a portable DVD player works upside-down.
Of course you can use a Video iPod or an Archos too, provided you can shoot the TC off the screen.
