We're going to be shooting jewelry pieces in extreme closeup and need to end up with the pieces over an alpha background.
I just tried shooting some pieces that we laid onto a piece of blue screen paper, but the results were unsatisfactory no matter how we lit it. I think the paper is showing too much grain in the extreme closeup mode. We've used this paper successfully as a large background for a person. in medium shots.
Any ideas?

You might be better off painting a piece of masonite. Spray paint would be the preferred method. Be sure to prime the material, first.

how about a different color? you can key any color. just make sure that color isn't prominent in your subject.

That's a good point. We're going to try using a black background this morning and see how it keys out. Thanks

If the jewelry reflects too much black, (likely will), surround the jewelry with white cards and or white fabric as much as you can.

Generally, this is very hard to do as no matter what colour you use (green/blue) it relects in jewellery. The only other way it to shoot it on a white or black background and then shoot the bg clean and use difference matting.

can you get the jewelry off the paper? support by piano wire that hides behind the piece?

The key is no shadows on the backgound. Try backlit plexi with a green or blue gel over the light or taped to the back of the frosted plexi.
