Hi,

I'm looking into buying the EX1, switching to tapeless workflow (have been using mostly the DVX100A up to this point). One thing that concerns me is extra drive space required to work with tapeless acquisition. I will need to invest in external drive(s) even before I purchase the camera.

How do I ensure my data is safe? I was considering buying a RAID5 system but here is my concern: I mostly work from a MacBook Pro. Most RAID5 drives are designed to work with desktop systems, I haven't found a Firewire or PCMCIA solution yet. Or should I just go with a good external drive and hope it won't die? And what about permanent archiving solutions? Do you think blank blu-ray DVDs will become affordable any time soon?

The link you'll want to read is:

Technical: Long Term Storage Of Video files (Long Post)
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=118998

While it doesn't address the issue of RAID-5 storage, it does talk about several possible solutions for file storage. What is also helpful is the comments make by other users, because you can see what others think.

Best Wishes,

Okay, as I was looking for a way to transfer the files over for storage out in the field, instead of buying a lot of $900 or so SxS cards, I came acrross this product (Sima Hitch USB Transfer Device) on another forum. Would something likethis work on the EX1? Would I be able to transfer the files from the SxS card over to, say, an external USB hard drive that is hooked up to the Hitch USB Transfer Device?

I own the Hitch, but have not tried updating its drivers, this might help. But, when I connected it directly to the EX1, it did not recognise it. I have not tried the Sony USB reader. I'm still waiting on delivery.

Since it seemed that Sony SxS card reader does not take batteries, it's almost impossible to use in the field. I wonder if their a laptop that is under $1,300 or so that has a built-in express card reader that can read the Sony SxS card. If so, will some point me to the link or model and brand?

Thanks!
