I have rented some P2 Cards and attempted to unload the P2 cards, both via firewire (1394) and through the P2 slot on the laptop. Neither way will make a connection.

I am able to dump it on some other computers, but when I bring the footage over to my laptop, all I see is white - the footage cannot be viewed.

I am running FCP 5 and have the latest version of Quicktime.

Any help? Thanks!

Justin

Install the P2 drivers from Panasonic's website on your computer.

I have done so, I can't even view the HD footage because the screen remains white? did I miss something?

Well, I have read through some of the requirements for this software. It requires INTEL CORE DUO 2GHz or greater [ my Powerbook is equipped with 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4, 1 G RAM]

The program also requires FCP 5.1.4 [ my Powerbook is equipped with 5.0.4 but has the import funtion of Panasonic P2]

What I want to do is use the laptop to unload the footage and it will be edited on a G5. Is there any way to put the clips onto the computer without even viewing them?

Yes, if you install the proper driver you can do exactly that. People are using G4 powerbooks all the time with P2.

You don't need a intel machine. We have the same laptop you have and have no problems. I would make sure you have the most recent version of FCP(we have 5.1.4 the non intel version). Run software update and it will link to the current version for that computer. I don't remember 5.04 being very p2 friendly.

running PB G4 here with 10.4.10 using QT 7.1.6 FCP 6.0 with P2CMS with no problems. recently shot corp video using DVCPRO HD codec - 720/ 24pn converted to SD for DVD playback . footage looked great!

you sihould not have any issues. also prev post will tell you that upgrading your QT to anythng past 7.1.6 is knows to create issues for many. i have not upgraded past 7.1.6 for this reason.

Hey Barry,

New poster, big fan of your books and posts....
Are there any downsides, cautionary measures, to be considered when dumping from p2 to macbook pro's? Why have a p2 store if this seems to be a good work flow. Thanks!

There are definite considerations to take into account when using an MBP. First, the cards don't fit so you have to use a Duel Adapter. Second, you must always write-protect the cards before plugging 'em in. Third, you should probably be using P2CMS to do the actual card copying instead of a finder drag 'n' drop. If you abide by these rules, it should work just fine.

The P2 Store is a totally different thing, a self-contained unit that's way smaller than an MBP and is designed to copy the cards, verify the copy, and format the cards. It was a very handy device when cards were smaller, but with today's 32GB cards the P2 Store starts to be outdated.

Again, if the footage shows white, then the DVCProHD codecs haven't been installed. That requires an install of a compatible version of FCP.

No way around it.
