Any one using the rode Ntg 1 or 2 for with hpx-500. Most of the time i have a audio person but would like to have a on camera option for some of my run and gun stuff. I have actually have had good success with the sony stock mic on my dsr-500. Just to clarify i don't expect this to be great audio. I want to be able catch ambient sound and in those unfortunate times when need the man on the street interview when i don't have a audio guy or time to put a lav on the.

I would recommend some thorough research for a decent on-camera microphone, it will never compare to a proper audio acquisition but you can get very reasonable and useable sound using this method. I suggest a visit to the audio threads right here, there're some extensive discussion about this particular subject.

I have the NTG 2 for DVX and I love it. The frequency range is superb. Highs are sharp and clear and the lows have oomph but not muddiness. The signal to noise ratio is really good too. There is background noise but the primary audio comes in well enough to over power the background.

has anyone tried the panasonic accesory mic? AJ-MC700. sells for just under $1K which seems high, but might be a good on-camera choice?

Got my Ntg 1 and did a shoot with it mounted with the factory mic holder. With my matte box on its a little tight but workable. Overall for a affordable mic that is not intended to be my main mic I was impressed. Have had good success capture some run and gun interviews with subject 5-8 feet away and got good sound bites. Much better than what the stock hvx mic did and my stock DSR-500 mic did. Definitely a good buy.

If anyone else is looking, B&H puts the NTG-1 in a kit (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/400812-REG/Rode__NTG_1_Shotgun_Microphone.html) with a shockmount and shortie XLR cable.
You might also look at the Audio-Technica AT875R, which is $200 at BH, and was reviewed favorably here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/right_mic_brockett.html
That page has audio files for the different mics as well, although sadly they didn't compare the NTG-1. Also, BH doesn't have a nifty package deal for the AT875R like they do for the NTG-1.
