I'd like to stop a lot of junk that is running in my PC upon start-up. In run>msconfig>startup I'm able to localize what's running when I start up my PC but I'm not sure what stuff is okay to uncheck. Can I uncheck the stuff that's hklm/software? is that safe to do? What other extensions or programs can I shut down in there? What should I look for?

Thanks guys!

If your in XP, Everything in your startup can be disabled, in vista you have to be more careful, because it loads important system things threw the startup rundown.

If you visit Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com) he has very good information on what things do and several "set ups" with varying levels of Windows functionality.

alvarez...this is a great thread idea....Ive often wondered why my 'processes' tab in my task manager (cont + alt + delete) is filled with a TON of stuff and what processes can I end??? I was trying to end anything I didn't recognize once and hit the wrong thing and 'nighty night. My computer shut off...

Yea it really makes a huge diffrence, Normal drivers will load threw Windows on startup, some tools found on laptops need to be re enabled for the driver interface to load, but XP will boot with none checked either way.

Hijack this,

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php

Run it and then Copy paste the logs to me if you want, I can try and advise which things to kill off (of course its all backed up so its undoable).

winpatrol is easy to use and may help block some of the unneeded stuff that comes on at startup.
