OK I am now ready to buy a Sony EX1. I was out in the states for the last two weeks and phoned around but there's none out there at the mo, so I couldn't buy one even if I had wanted to.
So now I am back in cold old Blighty, with a stinking cold brought about by the germs on the plane, and wondering what I should now do.
You see the problem is price. In the USA, it seems you can pick one up for a measly $6500, which is only £3250. But in the UK this exact same camera costs £4640 ( $9,200)
Its ahuge difference. If it was just a couple of hundred it wouldn't matter, but £1400 is a lot of money to pay over the top.
So is the silver support offered in the UK worth the £1400? I can fly out to NY and spend 3 nights in a hotel in Manhatten, buy the cam from B&H and return for only $900 ( £450) saving £1000.
Thoughts?
And does any company off the EX1 at a better price then B&H?

I would buy in the States for damn sure!
You can buy here in California as well as in the East.
Air Lingus flies direct into San Francisco now as well.
Many of the lads here were getting return tickets for £200.
Also, check out Sony's authorized dealers in Oregon as there is no sales tax there (VAT).

Ryanair to Milan?
5950€ (2 8gb included if you order before 31/12)
Steve, if you buy it, please share your opinions (You were an M2+HVX user, isn't it?)

I have been looking at this and a like for like comparison between B&H and creative video and the difference excluding VAT is around £400. That is a EX1 with 1 8GB card and a 16GB card plus long life battery.
I am VAT registered so it i not worth it for me, right now but if you are not VAT registered you save nearly £1110 which is far more tempting.
You have to remember there is a small risk of having to pay import duty and VAT if the customs clock that you bought you camera in the states.

dont forget to add sales tax if you are in Manhattan and buy from b & h. Also factor in food and drink, cheesy souvenirs and also that you will have to dump the box and smuggle the camera back in to the UK to avoid massive VAT AND DUTY charges.

Hi Folks,
Just picked up the the Sony Ex1 in NYC with 2 16gig cards. AbelCine got about 25. I put a $500 deposit on it about 3 weeks ago, and was called when it came in. Now it appears they are in stock check: www.abelcine.com/store/home.php
hey people, instead of taking both 8Gb ask if you can have one 8Gb and one 16Gb so you re gonna save a lot of money....here in switzerland the 8Gb is about 750$ and the 16Gb 1350$ and i took one 8Gb for free and for the second 16Gb I pay just about 450$ so its cheaper.... ;D

Hmm Yeah, that's the reality of the situation.
That said we just hiked two HVXs all the way to Japan and back, didn't get quizzed at all.

NOt saying you wouldn't get caught at customs, but it would be extremely unlikely and considering nearly every person through customs is carrying a camera, it would be an almost impossible task for Customs to tell whether you have purchased the camera on your travels or not. ( unless you have the box for it under your arm!
Yes sales tax has to be added which is another couple of hundred pounds, and i can avoid buying souvineers of King Kong climbing the Empire State Building. Food? Well I eat that here in the UK so that doesn't need to be factored. I was over in the uSA a week ago and it was very cheap to eat.
Looks like my HVX, together with firestore and many accessories will be heading for Ebay in the New Year.
