I'm wondering how fast or new a Mac laptop I will need to download 1080 files from the EX-1 and to view them either in some viewing software or in Final Cut Pro.

I now have a 1.5MHz powerbook with 1.5 Gig of RAM and FCP 5.1.2. That is fine for downloading, importing and looking @ P2 cards from an HVX.

I realize I will need an ExpressCard to PCMCIA adapter and upgrade to FCP 6. Do i need a new computer though? Will i be able to import the 1080 files into FCP and look at them, play them and do very simple editing?

It might struggle playing back the full resolution files

It might struggle playing back the full resolution files

If my existing laptop won't cut it, what do I need?
Will I have to spring for a full out MacBook Pro Intel laptop, or could I get something used that's still fast enough?
I was hoping to buy a Mac Pro desktop this winter but I can't afford 2 new computers.

Maybe I should get the Intel /Mac laptop and use that as my desktop as well. I'm not sure what limitations that would have as a machine for editing.

What are you using Phil?

Keep in mind that while Apple did recently put the Santa Rosa chips in their laptops, a brand new MacBook is anticipated fairly soon by Apple. Go to this site (http://www.macrumors.com), for more info.

Kind of a double post,

I will be testing the Ex this thursday.
Will I be able to ingest footage to my mac laptop straight from the ex through the
usb 2.0 connection into the latest version of FCP 6 ?
( ppc 1.67 running OS 10.4.11 and 2 GB of ram )

The Sony's file browser software is restricted to intel core duo processors. (new Mac's)
Do I need this browser software to ingest or can FCP ingest straight from the Camera ?

Or is this ---->:badputer: the situation I am in ....

and do I need to buy a new Mac Book Pro ??

I don't own, but pretty sure you can plug the SxS cards directly into any of the Intel MacBook Pro's and drag and drop.

Yes...this is correct.

I have an EX1 and a MBP and the workflow is flawless right now. The download times are about 6-8x.
