My wife is a 1st grade teacher, and I went to visit her class on Friday. She had told me before hand how much her kids love to have their picture taken, so I brought the ol' D40. These pics were a little soft. I was using the kit lens w/ natural light so there is a little blur. Plus they are kids and can't sit still for squat. I wish I had been able to take my 50mm, but alas it was not delivered until the following day. Anyway, they were cute and I thought I'd share a few. The first is straight off the camera, other than gray scale conversation. The 2nd I croped, gray scale convertion, and placed a mask to blur the background (first attempt at this). Let me know what you think. Thanks, Dan

I think if you hadn't mentioned the mask, I wouldn't have noticed:) I like the lighting and exposure here. The light looks really natural and the exposure is really spot on in my books with no blown highlights and no details lost in shadow areas...Good job!

The mask is slightly noticeable on this low res version which means when it is printed it will definitely be noticeable. Still looks really nice. The natural light works with the grayscale. The kids interact nicely with the camera and your tight composition along with the low angle make the photos friendly and sweet.

Thanks guys. I really didn't care for the mask, but it was worth trying. I prefer the original but since I put the 5 mins into working the mask I figured I'd post it anyway. Nice thing is now that I have my 50mm I can create photos that look like that in camera, with the super shallow DOF and spot on focus. I'll have it with me next time for sure.
